This faithful scale model of the fishing boat was dedicated to bonito/tuna fishing during the summer months, the rest of the time it was dedicated to catching other species or fishing in other areas following the seasonal migration of other bonito species. The traditional fishing methods for these tuna fishers are trolling and live bait. This live bait method was made possible by using small fish caught by the bonito fisherman himself with a small purse seine net, keeping them alive on board in tanks. HISTORY HMS SUPPLY: ‘FIRST FLEET’ SHIP TO COLONIZE AUSTRALIA

Discover HMS Supply, a wooden model ship of the English armed brigantine sailing boat from the 18th century. It was an essential part of the so-called First Fleet of the Royal Navy that colonized and founded Australia. HMS Supply was their oldest, smallest and fastest ship. Built in 1759 as a 175-ton armed vessel, she became the colony’s only link to the outside world after the loss of HMS Sirius in 1790. HMS Supply, precisely, was intended to be aship support for HMS Sirius(1786).

The HMS Supply was a brigantine, that is, a ship that had two masts and square sails. In addition, it was also a sloop, that is, a small ship with a single gun deck. It had eight small three-pounder guns and carried 50 men. Its dimensions were 21 meters -70 feet- in length and 8 meters -26 feet- in width.

From 1759 to 1786, HMS Supply was used to transport naval supplies between Thames and English Channel ports. During this period, she was docked at Deptford Dockyard. There she underwent minor repairs as necessary to maintain her seaworthiness.

On May 13, 1787, the ‘First Fleet’ left Plymouth – England – heading towards the antipodes. Under the command of Commodore Arthur Philip, the convoy was made up of 11 ships, carrying 1,500 sailors and officers with their families, as well as 732 convicts. They were heading to the great land of the south to establish the penal colony of New South Wales – a coast previously explored by James Cook. It would later become the first state of the Australian Commonwealth.

HISTORY II: CONSOLIDATION OF A NEW NATION

On January 19, 1788, eight months and a week later, the fleet arrived at Botany Bay, with HMS Supply being the first to dock. On January 26, 1788, seven days later, everyone arrived at Port Jackson – the future Port of Sydney -. Philip landed to proclaim Australia’s first national day and become the new nation’s first governor. The 168-ton HMS Supply was the fastest sailing ship in the ‘First Fleet’ and served as explorer and messenger during the voyage. HMS Supply rivals Sirius as the most famous historic ship of the new Australian nation. On 26 November 1791, she left Port Jackson and sailed via Cape Horn, arriving at Plymouth on 21 April 1792.

We present The Indian Girl Canoe model (19000) at 1:16 scale. It is a fantastic, detailed and faithful reduced wooden replica of the Amerindian canoe created in 1902 by the builder J.H. Rushton. It is one of the typical boats that we have seen for many decades in the Far West movies, used by both the North American Indians themselves and the settlers. Micro Tools for Modeling: The Expected New Product Catalog 2021-2022

Artesania Latina decided three years ago to create a specific collection of small tools: the Micro Tools for Modeling are aimed at the model building in general, and the assembly of ship models in particular, naval modeling. There were five different types of micro tools for modeling, all made of stainless steel, which were part of Artesania Latina’s catalog: the Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers A (27300) and Micro Moulding Scrapers B (27301), the Micro Saws (27302), the Micro Drawing Set (27325) and the Wooden Simulation Template (27322).

However, after the enormous success among our modelers friends of this type of small size and enormous functionality tool for its precision, Artesania Latina has designed and manufactured five new Micro Tools for Modeling, in order to facilitate to the amateur and professional of this beautiful hobby the daily tasks with the miniature: Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303), Micro Rigging Tools (27321), Micro Moulding Scrapers C (27304), Micro Easy Ratlines Template 6.5 mm (27311) and Micro Centering Ruler (27326).

MICRO TOOLS FOR MODELING: MITRE BOX FOR PRECISION CUTS (27303)

We show you the first brand new micro tool: the Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303). This tiny but resistant and effective tools, useful both for modeling and for all types of crafts, allows the modelers to cut 45 and 90 degrees in two materials: plastic and wood.

With total precision, you can obtain the necessary splits so that the parts fit perfectly, such as small strips for a ship model. For this, the Micro Mitre Box reflects two different units of measurement: millimeters and inches.

This very useful mini tool, presented in photo-etched and also made of stainless steel, so its longevity and reliability are assured, is divided into 4 essential elements: the mitre or miter, the fine saw -for plastics-, the coarse saw -magnificent to work the wood- and the MDF base, ideal to protect the area where the cuts are made with this modeling tool. MICRO OUTILS FOR MODELING: SHIP MODEL RIGGING TOOLS (27321)

It is a Micro Tool specifically for ship modeling, since it only serves to build the riggings of the model ships. We are talking about the Micro Rigging Tools (27321).

The Micro Rigging Tools are made of stainless steel and it comes in photo-etched format, ensuring its functionality and its nonexistent deterioration by rust or the passage of time.

They are used to place each one of the sails and the cotton threads of any naval scale model, any ship model. Specifically, the blister of the Micro Rigging Tools bring the following items: 5 hooks and pushers in order to easily handle the numerous threads and / or to remove any object of the model ship that makes impossible the access to the ship modeler.

These hooks and pushers, in order to be handled or wielded, need another metal attached to the photo-etched: a steel crosspiece to be assembled with each tool. However, we recommend an added handle like the one belonging to the Universal Cutter # 5.

MICRO MOULDING SCRAPERS / MICRO SHAPERS C: SHAPE BOAT MODELS STRIPS (27304)

Another novelty for 2021 in terms of Micro Tools for Modeling are the Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers C (27304). They are used to mold wooden and plastic strips of any ship, dollhouse or building model, among other scale models. After the success achieved with the other two types of Micro Shapers, A and B, Artesania Latina team has created this third variant. Thus we expand the number of ways with which the aforementioned materials can be worked.

The Micro Moulding Scrapers C are also essential for naval modeling. This set includes 3 high quality metal plates with about 15 or 16 different shapes for each of these. In this way, the modeler can achieve around 45 varied reliefs thanks to these specific micro tools for modeling. The existing measurements in these Micro Shapers C are the following: 1.5×5 mm, 2×5 mm, 1.5×4 mm, 2×4 mm, 3×4 mm and 5×4 mm.

Also included special trapezoidal shapes for 1×3 mm and 1.5×4 mm strips. Micro Moulding Scrapers C also facilitate working with sticks and rods of different diameters to reinforce them. They are fantastic modeling tools for model ships rigging.

Decorate your wooden and plastic models by shaping the materials you work with. Get beautiful and many elementary motifs with these new Micro Shapers C. To do this, sand the material through which the plate is going to pass in the chosen shape. Then take the Micro Moulding Scrapers C and pass it over the wooden or plastic strip being treated. Just repeat that process several times until you achieve the desired shape and … It’s done!

MICRO TEMPLATES FOR EASY RATLINES

The last of the 2021 novelties of Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina are the Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 5 mm (27310), Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 6.5 mm (27311) and Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 8 mm (27312). The set includes three wooden templates with various widths according to the different shrouds. When building any model ship rigging, in addition to making the assembly process easier for you, the micro jigs will save you large amounts of thread when you are focused on the ratlines.

The Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines are placed behind the shrouds. With the side ‘combs’ a zig-zag thread is passed in front of them. Put everything and add a dot of glue on each joint of the shrouds and on the thread that you have put in front. Next, cut off the excess threads. Much better to make the scales so knot by knot at each joint.

NEW FOR 2022! MICRO TOOLS FOR MODELING: MICRO CENTERING RULER (27326)

We already present a new for 2022 of the Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina: Micro Centering Ruler (27326). It allows building models and other crafts with greater ease and precision as it indicates the center of the parts. Made of high quality stainless steel, the Micro Centering Ruler brings a metric and imperial measurement systems, with 3.93” (10cm) for each side. The 0 is on the center of the ruler, which includes a protractor and small holes to mark the measurements with a mechanical pencil or pencil. Indispensable so that everything is square!

Cover the Model Ship Hull: Assembly of a Wooden Boat Model (IV)

We have to cover the model ship hull during the assembly of a wooden naval model, but before we have to sand the frames. Specifically, its more square edges, in order to make them blunt so that, later, they fit better with the cover as they are a little curved. To do this, you can use our sanding block and sandpaper.

Later, proceed to cover the deck with wood veneer with glue. We recommend our dense cyanoacrylate and spray accelerator or the white glue. You can also make it with nails, a magnetic nailer and a modeler’s hammer. It all depends on the age and make of the naval scale model you have purchased, or the method you like best.

It is time to start covering the boat hull with, in this case, the first layer of wooden strips, as can be seen in the image below. Artesanía Latina electric plank bender tool will help you shape the strips. Wet the strips for at least half an hour and apply the heat of the aforementioned tool to shape them. You can also use the manual plank bender tool.

Then, make the holes where the cannons will come out, that is, the cannon ports, as we said, once you have built the first layer of the hull cover. We recommend the use of a template so that the distance between the loop-holes is the same and to facilitate this thorough work. We also recommend tools like drill, cutter and file.

It is time to cover the model ship hull with the second layer, but this time with wooden veneer.

COVER MODEL SHIP HULL: SANDING AND VARNISHING

When the hull cover is finished, sand the entire hull gently and varnish it. Depending on the ship model being worked, some will require that your hull be painted with some color and some brush.

You already have the ship model ready for the rigging installation. This process will be seen in the next post dedicated to any wooden model ship building process. In this sense, Artesania Latina‘s ship modeling kits are the best in value for money.

Ship modeling and fans of this beautiful hobby will be happy when they build this faithful replica. Santa Maria ship scale model has required the latest techniques in design and manufacturing, in addition to having the highest quality materials.

CONTENTS OF NEW MODELING SHIP KIT SANTA MARIA CARAVEL

The modeling kit of this classic ship commanded by Christopher Columbus during the voyage through which he discovered America at the end of the 15th century. ESSENTIAL IMPROVEMENTS ON THIS GREAT SHIP MODEL

Artesania Latina’s 3D designers and modelers have made numerous improvements on the Santa Maria Caravel wooden model. Precisely, the most remarkable is the ship structure reform “to give it more consistency and lightness, we had to create many new parts”, says Artesania Latina team.

One of the modelers states that “we have redesigned the false keel, the frames and the decks of the ship. It is one of the biggest novelties not having to use nails to be able to build them, they are only used in some details”.

Precisely, speaking about the decks of the Santa Maria Caravel renewed wooden model, the 3D designer emphasizes that “the system of tabs of the frames has been improved, implanting a greater number of these to implement it, because it did not cover 100% all the parts in the previous version, it was necessary to facilitate, for example, the fitting of its ends and for a perfect alignment without leaving any more loose part”.
