HISTORY OF THE MOST POWERFUL SHIP OF THE WORLD, THE ONLY ONE STILL IN ONE PIECE

Currently, it is in a dry dock in the port of Portsmouth (Hampshire) in England as a museum piece. The English ship HMS Victory remains the flagship of the Second Lord of the Sea. It is even more important because it is the only ship of the line that has survived to this day in conditions faithful to the originals.

HMS Victory was launched in 1765. The rest of the works such as the rigging, the sails and the armament were progressively completed until in 1778 the ship of the line could be in active service. Specifically, this was a first class ship. The initials of this famous ship refer to “His/Her Majesty’s Ship.” In this case “His”, since the ship first sailed during the reign of George III of the United Kingdom and Ireland (1738-1820).

HMS VICTORY IN THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR

HMS Victory soon participated in its first battle, in 1778. Loaded with 104 guns and under the command of different commanders, this three-decker British ship of the line lived through several wars and had various functions. For a few years it became a hospital ship for Spanish and French prisoners of war. It was not until 1805, at Cape Trafalgar, that he achieved worldwide fame for leading the English fleet to victory.

Two years after being assigned to command HMS Victory, vice admiral Horatio Nelson was the leader who participated in the aforementioned Battle of Trafalgar. It was the most decisive of the Napoleonic Wars.

Thirty-four Franco-Spanish ships encountered a much stronger and better prepared British Royal Navy. The defeat was imminent and indisputable. The fleet led by Vice Admiral Nelson won the most important battle. It was the beginning of the decline of the French emperor in Europe.

Victory, John Constable.

Vice Admiral Nelson, however, never knew his victory. During the heat of battle, he was shot through his spine and ended his life a few hours later, becoming one of Britain’s greatest war heroes. This battle was the one that put an end to the French and Spanish navies. The United Kingdom would assume maritime supremacy, which would last until World War II.

Pen Duick Sailboat Model Kit (22418N) at 1:28 scale by Artesanía Latina.

He entrusted the Pen Duick to the Costantini shipyard of La Trinité-sur-Mer to evaluate the work to be carried out. The hull of the sailboat was rotten to repair traditionally. Unable to finance the work, he proposed Marc and Gilles Costantini take on an unprecedented challenge to save his boat: rebuild a new hull by applying seven successive layers of glass fabric and polyester resin, using the old hull. as a mold. Polyester construction was in its infancy, such a large and heavy sailboat had never been built before. It was the largest hull of its type at that time. The ship was renovated in the old-fashioned way at the Raymond Labbé shipyard in 1983 in Saint-Malo, and celebrated its centenary in May 1998.

On the night of June 12th to 13th 1998, Éric Tabarly died after falling into the sea during a voyage to Ireland with his beloved Pen Duick. He always opposed his sailboat being classified as a ‘Historical Monument’.

Model Ship Medium Skills (II): Más Kits de Modelismo Naval en Madera con Modelos Históricos para Ensamblar

We continue the breakdown of the catalog from the previous post. Get to know each wonderful medium skills model ship kit that you can build with your own hands. Artesanía Latina exists to fulfill all your modeling desires. Therefore, do not hesitate to also take a look at all the tools and accessories that can be helpfully to you.

MODEL SHIP MEDIUM SKILLS: WOODEN FISHING BOAT MARE NOSTRUM (20100N)

The Mare Nostrum is a classic fishing boat from the Mediterranean Sea, from Arenys de Mar, Spain. With a length of 15 meters, a beam of 3.5 and a displacement of 10 tons, this boat was powered by a 40HP engine. The Mediterranean trawlers are all similar, presenting small variations depending on their place of origin. It is an intermediate level boat model, but due to its details it will delight anyone who builds it.

The naval modeling kit of the Mare Nostrum contains all the necessary parts to build the model. In addition, it is equipped with boxes for fish, cabins, a detailed engine, a winch for collecting the cable, and at the stern, protruding from the hull, a rigging with pulleys to pass it during towing. As a gift, bring the wooden base for display along with a nominative plaque. Once completed, the model measures 16.14” (410mm) length, 10.62” (270mm) height and 4.13” (105mm) width.

Model Ship Medium Skills. Trawler Mare Nostrum (20100N) by Artesanía Latina.

MODEL SHIP MEDIUM SKILLS: WOODEN STEAMBOAT KING OF THE MISSISSIPPI (20515)

Our next model ship for medium skills modelers that we present to you is a steamboat. Built entirely of wood and equipped with boilers to move their iconic propulsion blades, this type of boat was the solution to transporting passengers and merchandise along the river until well into the 20th century. Steamboats played an important role in the development of the Mississippi River basin and its tributaries, allowing convenient transportation in both directions of the river. They helped reduce the immensity of America and as ‘theater ships’ they reduced the loneliness of this immensity. America is not just modernism: it is also romance and dreams!

The naval modeling kit of the King of the Mississippi includes all the necessary parts for its construction: parts of 8 sheets of high-precision laser-cut board, made of hardwoods such as birch and linden; and 2 large photo-etched sheets (294×156 mm and 257×122 mm) including many decoration details never seen before in die-cast and brass. Includes adhesive fabric flags and, as a bonus, the base with name plate.

Now, the model can come to life by purchasing two different sets of effects separately: Lighting Set for Models and DIY Projects (27590) and Motion Motor Set (27591) of the boat blades. Also, to make this faithful miniature replica come to life, you can add a figures set (20515F), sold separately. Once finished, the model measures 25.98” (660 mm) length, 7.55” (192 mm) heigth and 5.11” (130 mm) width.

MODEL SHIP MEDIUM SKILLS: WOODEN CARAVEL LA NIÑA (22410)

Our third proposal for a mid-intermediate level boat model is La Niña, one of the three Spanish caravels used by Christopher Columbus on the first trip to the New World in 1492. Built in the shipyards of the Port of Moguer (Huelva, Andalusia) a few years before the trip, it became the captain ship of the expedition after the Santa María ran aground. And now it will delight the most demanding modellers. The expedition left the Port of Palos for the Canary Islands on August 3, 1492. On this scale, the lateen sail that we represent in this model was transformed into square sails. After discovering America, La Niña would return with Christopher Columbus on board, reaching Lisbon on March 4 and finally the port of Palos on March 15, 1493.

Its assembly system using a false keel and frames, like the vast majority of Artesanía Latina’s scale models of boats, brings its design closer to that of the real ship. The modeling kit contains all the necessary parts for its construction: high-precision laser-cut board, birch wood and veneers, various photo-etched brass parts, cast and hand-sewn sails ready to be placed. As a gift, it includes the wooden base for display. After assembly, the model measures 16.33” (415mm) length, 4.37” (111mm width) and 19.48” (495mm) height. On the other hand, it can provide the model of this and the rest of the caravels with more realism even with the Set of 10 Metal Figurines at scale 1 :65 crew members, ready to be assembled and painted, sold separately.

Model Ship Medium Skills. Caravel La Niña (22410) by Artesanía Latina.

WOODEN CARAVEL MODEL SANTA MARÍA (22411N)

The fourth proposal for a medium skills model ship is possibly the most important in history as it was the one in which Christopher Columbus was traveling when America was discovered at the end of the 15th century, specifically, in 1492. La Nao Santa María, incorrectly called ‘caravel’ because the other two smaller boats that accompanied it were, La Niña and La Pinta – although in the original documents all three were considered caravels – it was originally called La Gallega, whose owner was Juan de la Cosa.

This Santa María Caravel naval modeling kit contains all the necessary parts to build the model, and of the highest quality. High-quality light birch woods cut with precision thanks to the laser; magnificent details made of metal and photo-etched parts; unbeatable and reinforced sails with cotton fabric, ready to be placed – this model includes die-cut cardboard templates to be able to paint its characteristic crosses; and, as a gift so that the model is perfectly displayed, as a work of art that it is, a wooden pedestal with a nominative metal plate. After being built, its measurements are as follows: 19.80” (503mm) length, 10.39” (264mm) width and 19.60” (498mm) height.

Model Ship Medium Skills. Caravel Santa María (22411N) by Artesanía Latina.

MODEL SHIP MEDIUM SKILLS: WOODEN CARAVEL LA PINTA (22412)

The fifth option of model ship medium skills is the wooden kit of the caravel La Pinta. The fastest of the three caravels used by Christopher Columbus on the first voyage to the New World in 1492. Built in the shipyards of Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) a few years before the trip, it was the fastest of the three boats and often had to wait for the other two. The expedition with the three ships left the Port of Palos for the Canary Islands on August 3, 1492. The sails and rudder of La Pinta were repaired on this stopover, to finally depart for the New World on September 6. It was on October 12 when the famous cry of Rodrigo de Triana “Land in sight!” was heard from the La Pinta ship.

The naval modeling kit contains high-quality parts: high-precision laser-cut board; birch wood and veneer; numerous pieces in wood, metal and brass; pieces in high quality photo-etched brass; sails sewn by hand and prepared to be placed; cotton threads; full scale plan of the boat; and, as a gift, a wooden base to display the model once finished. Once its assembled, this faithful miniature replica measures 20.07” (510mm) length, 9.05” (230mm) width and 15.74” (400mm) height.

Wooden Caravel Model La Pinta (22412) by Artesanía Latina.

MODEL SHIP MEDIUM SKILLS: WOODEN BRIG HMS SUPPLY (22420)

The sixth alternative for those who intend to assemble a medium skills model ship kit is the wooden brig HMS Supply from the 18th century. It was an essential part of the so-called ‘First Fleet’ or First Fleet of the Royal Navy that colonized and founded Australia . HMS Supply was their oldest, smallest and fastest ship. Built in 1759 as a 175-ton armed vessel, she became the colony’s only link to the outside world after the loss of HMS Sirius in 1790. HMS Supply, precisely, was intended to be aship support for HMS Sirius(1786).

The modeling kit of the scale model contains high-quality parts. 6 wooden plates cut by high precision laser, 2 photo-etched plates in brass with numerous details -one of them smaller-, set of birch wood parts -veneers, strips and round rods, oak veneer, fantastic set of 11 sails sewn from cotton ready to be placed, cotton threads for maneuvering in different colors and thicknesses and flags.

Likewise, it includes as a gift bonus a stand with a nominative metal plate, 7 die-cast figures and strong>copper lining for the helmet. To work with copper on the boat, we recommend our 5 mm Micro Riveting Tool (27320), for sale separately. Once built, this faithful miniature replica measures 23.11” (587 mm) length, 11.10” (282 mm) width and 26.65” (677 mm) height.

WOODEN MODEL CHINESE JUNK RED DRAGON (18020)

The seventh option for an intermediate level boat model is the Chinese junk Red Dragon. Still in use in many parts of Southeast Asia, these vessels were used for both trade and war. The beautiful reeds, typical of the China Sea, were all the rage among leaders of the time such as Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan, who used them to try to conquer Japan during the 13th century. Appearance of reeds is documented around 600 BC. The hull lacks a keel and has a short stern. Its sails are made of thick fabric reinforced with reeds, which provides it with a lot of stability and thrust. It was one of the most used vessels for piracy on the coasts of Southeast Asia.

The modeling kit contains high-quality parts: high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. Once built, the model measures 18.89” (480mm) length, 5.11” (130mm) width and 17.32” (440mm) height.

MODEL SHIP MEDIUM SKILLS: WOODEN GALLEON SAN FRANCISCO II (22452N)

Ship Models Intermediate Level: Wide and Varied Catalog of Wooden Naval Modeling Kits (I)

Have you already built several beginner model boats and feel like you need to take the leap to the next level? Do you already know how to assemble a naval model in general and do you have basic knowledge of using tools? It’s your time to start building ship models intermediate level of skills, without a doubt. Artesanía Latina offers you, in this sense, a wide and varied catalog of wooden naval modeling kits so you can take the next step in your passion for naval modeling. For this reason, we break down in two posts which are each of the historical and high-quality naval scale models. Everything so that the modeler who wants to evolve his skills knows what he wants to set up as a new challenge.

SHIP MODELS INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: WOODEN AND ABS NAVIGABLE-SUITABLE R/C TUGBOAT ATLANTIC (20210)

We start the ship models intermediate level review with the wooden and ABS plastic model of the Atlantic offshore tugboat. It is a faithful replica of the tugboats of the 70s and 80s of the 20th century. It was an offshore tug, not a port tug, so it was prepared to withstand the most adverse weather conditions. Its entire structure was designed to be a stable and very manageable boat in the water, in addition to being able to tow large vessels such as oil tankers or cruise ships in open waters.

The Atlantic Navigable Naval Modelling Kit contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, photo-etched parts, brass and cast iron. It has numerous details in chemical trimming to be more faithful to the original boat. Likewise, the hull of the Atlantic tugboat is made of very high quality ABS so it can be easily converted into an R/C model by being more resistant and waterproof. Without forgetting that its interior is ready for the installation of the electrical system -not included-. The water cannons are designed to be usable – mechanism not included. Once built, the model measures 41.73” (1,060mm) length, 23.62” (600mm) height and 9.84” (250mm) width.

SHIP MODELS INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: WOODEN TUGBOAT SANSON (20415)

Tugboat from the 40s of the last century. Equipped with a powerful steam boiler of 2,000 HP, the vessel could develop speeds of 14 knots while coming to the rescue of much larger ships. In the mid-19th century, navigation experienced a great revolution. The main factor is the implementation of mechanical propulsion. As a consequence, ships gradually increase their size and displacement, losing in the process the ease of maneuvering in docks and ports. As a result of this, tugboats are born. New types of ships of small tonnage and shallow draft but with more than enough driving power and maneuverability to assist ships much larger than themselves.

The naval modeling kit of the Sanson tugboat includes all the necessary parts so you can build your model. 7 high-precision laser-cut plywood sheets, as well as birch slats and rods, and oak veneer. By the way, it is the first kit that contains oak veneer, Artesanía Latina being a pioneer in including this noble wood in any model on the market. In this way, the model is much more realistic, exclusive and avoids the use of wood from tropical forests. It also comes with 1 photo-etched plate with numerous magnificent details, as well as accessories such as die-cast pieces, brass rods, threads, wooden trim and much more. Once built, the model measures 23.81” (605mm) length, 5.11” (130mm) width and 13.47” (350mm) height.

SHIP MODELS INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: WOODEN DUTCH FISHING BOAT BOTTER (22125)

Our third proposal of intermediate level ship models is the Dutch Botter fishing boat model. These ships sailed for centuries in the shallow coastal waters of the Zuiderzee Sea. The crew, usually between 2 and 4 men, used to keep the catches alive in a livewell located in the center of the boat. Zuiderzee was a large inland sea north of the Netherlands. The completion in 1932 of a large dyke divided it in two, creating a large inland saltwater lake called Ijsselmeeer and adding the rest of the former inland sea to the Wadden Sea.

Its assembly system using false keel and frames, like the vast majority of Artesanía Latina’s scale models of boats, brings its design closer to that of the real ship. The modeling kit contains all the parts necessary for construction. High precision laser cut board pieces, fine woods, brass, cast iron and hand-sewn cotton sails ready to be placed. In addition, it includes as a bonus a beautiful wooden base to build with a nameplate of the Botter fishing boat. Everything fits perfectly in this wonderful naval miniature. Once built, this faithful miniature replica of the Dutch Botter fishing boat measures 18.70” (475mm) length, 4.52” (115mm) width and 14.76” (375mm) height.

WOODEN MODEL ARAB DHOW SULTAN (22165)

The fourth proposal for ship models intermediate level is the exotic Arab dhow Sultan: traditional boat from the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula, India and East Africa. This ship was the primary instrument in trade and the spread of the Islamic faith. Likewise, the dhow was mainly used as a cargo ship, from grain and fish to slaves or minerals. Revolutionary in naval history due to its triangular sails and practically unchanged since its initial designs, it is believed that the dhow was the seed for the construction of the Venetian galleys and caravels, leading to the creation of larger ships with mixed sails.

Sultan is another fantastic ship scale model for modellers to move on to the second level of difficulty in building naval miniatures. Its simple construction system and simple sail make it easy to assemble this beauty of naval modeling. The modeling kit contains a set of high precision laser pre-cut board pieces, wood, brass and cast parts. Also, birch wood and veneer, high quality photo-etched brass pieces, hand-sewn sails and cotton threads. Without forgetting the stand-stand to display the model. Once built, this faithful miniature replica measures 15.35” (390mm) length, 4.92” (125mm) width and 17.32” (440mm) height.

SHIP MODELS INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: FRENCH WOODEN FISHING BOAT MARIE JEANNE (22175)

The fifth option for ship models intermediate level is the wooden model of the French fishing boat, the tuna boat Marie Jeanne. Dedicated to tuna fishing in the months of June to October, this fishing boat reached the coasts of Mauritania on trips of up to two months, since tuna are usually far from the coast. Leaving the French port of Concarneau, the Marie Jeanne sailed between 1900 and 1950. Tuna fishing requires strong and fairly fast boats. In the beginning, ships built for other purposes, generally too heavy, were dedicated to these tasks.

The naval modeling kit contains high-precision laser-precut board, noble woods, photo-etched parts, brass and cast iron. In addition to hand-cut and sewn cotton sails ready to be placed. As a bonus gift, it includes a wooden base with a metal nameplate so that the faithful miniature replica is perfectly displayed once assembled. The modeller can enjoy a much more enjoyable and easier assembly experience with this new scale model. Once the model is built, it measures 22.24” (565 mm) length, 4.52” (115 mm) width and 19.48” (495 mm) height.

SHIP MODELS INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: FRENCH WOODEN CORSAIR CUTTER LE RENARD (22401)

The sixth alternative for those who intend to assemble intermediate level ship models is the 1:50 scale wooden model of the French corsair cutter Le Renard. Launched in Saint Malo in 1812 by the famous privateer Robert Surcouf with the main objective to attack and capture the enemy trading ships of France. His actions and his legacy towards the city of Saint Malo make the Renard a symbol of the strong French naval identity. Le Renard was the last ship built by the famous Robert Surcouf. In September 1813 he accomplished his greatest feat by defeating the English schooner HMS Alphea in combat, turning the city of Saint Malo into a refuge for the families of the largest privateers in the world.

The scale model kit contains high-precision laser-cut board pieces, birch wood, brass, cast iron and sails ready to be placed. Also, base support with metal plate. Once built, this faithful miniature replica measures 24.21” (615mm) length, 9.37” (238mm) width and 22.04” (560mm) height.

French Corsair Cutter Model Le Renard (22401) by Artesanía Latina.

WOODEN MODEL OF AMERICAN SCHOONER HARVEY (22416)

The seventh option for intermediate level ship models is the American schooner Harvey at 1:60 scale. Schooners are a type of sailboat defined by their rig. To a fast hull is added a sail that is also fast and has good ability to sail to windward. They were popular for many purposes, such as transporting cargo or fishing, as well as widely used by privateers. The Harvey is a new edition of this classic 19th century American schooner. It is reminiscent of the lines of the old coastal schooners of the 1860s in the United States that cannot be missing from your naval model collection.

The modeling kit contains high-quality parts such as precision laser-cut basswood plywood, brass photo-etched sheet with decorative pieces, sails with cotton fabric – ready to be placed- and cotton threads. As a gift so that the model is perfectly displayed, a wooden base with a nominative metal plate prepared to have light. The LED Lighting Set (27590), sold separately. With fine details on the deck and eight cannons. Once the Harvey model is assembled, it measures 26.77” (680mm) length, 19.29” (490mm) height and 9.84” (250mm) width.

SHIP MODELS INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: CANADIAN WOODEN SCHOONER BLUENOSE II (22453)

The eighth option is the wooden model at 1:75 scale of the Canadian schooner Bluenose II. The original Bluenose boat was built as a fishing and racing boat in response to the defeat of the Nova Scotia schooner Delawana by the Massachusetts-based Esperanto. After a life divided between racing victories and hard work fishing, the Bluenose found its final destination in 1946 when it ran aground on a reef in Haiti. There is also a faithful replica of the original built in 1964 that serves as an ambassador, symbol and tourist attraction of the city of Lunenburg, still sailing today.

The modeling kit contains high-precision laser-cut board pieces, fine woods, brass, cast iron, cotton threads and hand-sewn sails ready to be placed. The wooden model of the Bluenose II by Artesanía Latina is, without exaggeration, the best on the market. For its quality, details and for having by far the most complete step-by-step assembly instructions in seven languages and in full color in DVD format for computers -PC and MAC-. Once assembled, this faithful miniature replica measures 27.16” (690mm) length, 4.33” (110mm) width and 22.44” (570mm) height.

HISTORY HMS SUPPLY: ‘FIRST FLEET’ SHIP TO COLONIZE AUSTRALIA

Discover HMS Supply, a wooden model ship of the English armed brigantine sailing boat from the 18th century. It was an essential part of the so-called First Fleet of the Royal Navy that colonized and founded Australia.

The HMS Supply was a brigantine, that is, a ship that had two masts and square sails. In addition, it was also a sloop, that is, a small ship with a single gun deck. It had eight small three-pounder guns and carried 50 men. Its dimensions were 21 meters -70 feet- in length and 8 meters -26 feet- in width.

From 1759 to 1786, HMS Supply was used to transport naval supplies between Thames and English Channel ports. During this period, she was docked at Deptford Dockyard. There she underwent minor repairs as necessary to maintain her seaworthiness.

On May 13, 1787, the ‘First Fleet’ left Plymouth – England – heading towards the antipodes. Under the command of Commodore Arthur Philip, the convoy was made up of 11 ships, carrying 1,500 sailors and officers with their families, as well as 732 convicts. They were heading to the great land of the south to establish the penal colony of New South Wales – a coast previously explored by James Cook. It would later become the first state of the Australian Commonwealth.

HISTORY II: CONSOLIDATION OF A NEW NATION

On January 19, 1788, eight months and a week later, the fleet arrived at Botany Bay, with HMS Supply being the first to dock. On January 26, 1788, seven days later, everyone arrived at Port Jackson – the future Port of Sydney -. Philip landed to proclaim Australia’s first national day and become the new nation’s first governor. The 168-ton HMS Supply was the fastest sailing ship in the ‘First Fleet’ and served as explorer and messenger during the voyage. HMS Supply rivals Sirius as the most famous historic ship of the new Australian nation. On 26 November 1791, she left Port Jackson and sailed via Cape Horn, arriving at Plymouth on 21 April 1792.

Now, you have the great opportunity to build this great 1:50 scale model ship of the HMS Supply First Fleet 1787 (22420) on our new Modeling Workshop (27648-N), sold separately.

Seven months after its return to France – where it underwent various repairs – it was entrusted with new campaigns. In September 1782, the frigate’s destination ocean will no longer be the Atlantic, but the Indian Ocean. The coasts of India and the Bay of Bengal await the Hermione and its new commander, Lieutenant Du Pérou. Aim? Support the fleet of Admiral Suffren, who fights on a secondary front of the American War. L’Hermione arrives at Île de France on April 18 and joins Suffren on July 14, 1783, a few days after its important victory at Gondelour. Peace was signed in 1783 and L’Hermione returned to Rochefort in February 1784, after several stops on the île de France and Île Bourbon in October 1783.

Frigate Hermione La Fayette (II) Memoirs: Wreck, Location and Reconstruction of the French Ship.

For seven years, from 1784 to 1791, the memoirs of the frigate Hermione La Fayette remain stationary in Rochefort. Its hull is very damaged and requires a very deep and long repair. Her hull and rigging are also not in optimal condition. That is why, since 1789, around 450 repairs have been carried out so that it can sail again.

MEMOIRS OF FRIGATE HERMIONE LA FAYETTE: WRECK AND LOCATION

Times of revolutionary France back in 1793. On the one hand, the country goes to war against the English in February. On the other hand, Vandean revolts occur in the west of the Gallic nation. In these turbulent times, the memoirs of the frigate Hermione La Fayette are written again with Captain Pierre Martin. This is because the French ship is heading to monitor and control the Vendeans and English at the mouth of the Loire River. They must be prevented from landing on the coast and from entering the town of Sables-d’Olonne and Nantes.

Frigate Hermione La Fayette (II) Memoirs: Wreck, Location and Reconstruction of the French Ship.

Its last mission arrives in September of that same year, which leads it to its shipwreck. Hermione only has to escort a convoy of twelve ships with a cargo of sixty-five guns from Indret between the Loire estuary and Brest. The inexperience of the crew is such that the frigate runs aground in the shallow waters of Le Croisic (Plateau du Four) breaking the hull to starboard.

The jewel of French naval history remains for almost two centuries at the bottom of the sea. It was not until July 22, 1984 when a diver, Michel Vasquez, discovered parts of the wreck. With great care, they manage to float some of the remains, thus beginning to bring the frigate Hermione La Fayette back to life. Among others, the anchor, a piece of the rudder and three cannons. RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FRIGATE: HERMIONE LA FAYETTE ASSOCIATION

The memoirs of the frigate Hermione La Fayette must be brought back to reality. For this reason, the Hermione La Fayette Association – whose official license our models hold – decides to create a replica of the French ship. In 1997, its reconstruction began at the Rochefort arsenal. Seventeen years later, on September 7th, 2014, the magnificent replica of L’Hermione was launched.

Hermione La Fayette Frigate Memoirs (II): Reconstruction of the French Ship

Shipyard is located in one of the two dry docks located at one end of the Corderie Royale, on the banks of the Charente River, in Rochefort. The place was designed and conditioned so that it could be visited.

The first and fundamental premise is that the replica is as faithful as possible to the original. That is, a three-masted ship with more than sixty-five meters in length, twelve hundred square meters of sails and a hull made entirely of oak wood. Without original plans, they take as reference those of Concorde, its twin frigate. On this, they are making the required changes with two goals: its adaptation to current regulations and its comfort for the crew.

These are some of the characteristics of the replica: mainmast fifty-four meters above the keel, made with two thousand oak trees, more than four hundred thousand pieces of metal and wood, one thousand pulleys, twenty-six cannons 12 pounds on the battery deck and eight 6s on the main deck.

For the rigging of 18th century ship, around 200 sailors were needed. However, the replica is only 80, which shows that it now has numerous technological improvements. The original frigate was built in just half a year, while the launch of the replica was in the 21st century, it takes six years until 2014.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT BEFORE BUILDING THE FRIGATE HERMIONE LA FAYETTE

Last quarter of the 18th century, there is a great rivalry between France, England and Holland to gain control of different parts of the globe. When the different European nations fought for more power. At this time, France once again manages to have a worthy fleet in its fight against the British Royal Navy for the well-known colonies and for the money they bring to the coffers of the European states.

In this sense, the ‘New Continent’ sees how revolts begin to occur in its North American colonies, a fact that France intends to take advantage of to take revenge on the British… And they will achieve this thanks to the frigate Hermione La Fayette and many other vessels that are built at the Rochefort arsenal! Precisely, the construction of the frigate occurred in a golden stage in which the French fleet achieved very relevant victories, such as the one that occurred in the United States War of Independence. France supports the American insurgents, who are continually ‘looted’ by taxes by England. And Hermione La Fayette participates fully in helping them.

On July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was written. Congress defends what has been achieved with the support of the French country, so representatives of the American Chamber visit Europe to gather weapons and to convince the authorities to have French officers fight with them. France not only accepted this in February of 1778, but also the following month declared war on England. And a 20-year-old young man has a lot to do with this Franco-American commitment. Gilbert du Motier, the marquis of La Fayette. This is the one who convinces King Louis XVI to support the Americans.

CHRONICLE FRIGATE HERMIONE LA FAYETTE: CONSTRUCTION

The chronicle of the frigate Hermione La Fayette continues with the beginning of its construction. The French minister De Sartine proposed its creation and the Council of the Port of Rochefort approved it in November 1778. Order was given to naval engineer Pierre Chevillard Sr., who, in addition to the Hermione La Fayette, also directed the construction of another frigate, the Fée. To do this, it is based on the plans of two other vessels: Courageuse and Concorde, the first two of these four frigates.

At this point, the construction was fired, which took place on the right bank of the Charente River, within the same arsenal, in December 1778. This incredible speed in assembling the sailboat is obviously due to the demand for help in the War of Independence, but it also has other factors that help achieve this speed never seen before.

Firstly, because the theoretical and practical basis in naval engineering is already available. Secondly, because of the huge workforce that is used. And thirdly, because they have the materials where they work. On this chronicle of the frigate Hermione La Fayette, it should be noted that hundreds of carpenters, blacksmiths and all types of professionals – without forgetting prisoners – are involved in its assembly so that the ship can be launched in minimal time.

CHRONICLE FRIGATE HERMIONE LA FAYETTE: CHARACTERISTICS

Hermione La Fayette is a frigate, it is a light, fast and very maneuverable ship. It is unbeatable. Its dimensions? 66 meters in length and 11.5 meters in width. Speaking of its mast, it has three vertical masts with modular dimensions and a sail of up to 3,300 square meters. Without forgetting its complex rig of 26 kilometers of rigging that requires between 250 and 300 crew members. Regarding its weapons potential, it has 32 cannons. 26 units of 12-pounder guns on the battery deck and 6 units of 6-pounder guns on the castle deck.

To provide it with extra speed, in January 1780, the hull of the Hermione La Fayette was covered in copper with 1,100 sheets of metal. Thus, the hull is protected from mollusks and algae.

INITIAL TEST IN THE GULF OF BIZCAYA AND FIRST STEPS IN AMERICA

The Bay of Biscay is the first place where it is destined, here the chronicle of the frigate Hermione La Fayette continues before its American campaign. During half a year of 1779, the commander La Touche Tréville intends to check the conditions under which the ship sails. To do this, it also recruits 292 people as a crew. Objective of this first mission? Monitor and protect the coasts of the aforementioned gulf and the English Channel where trade is continuous. The Gauls capture six English ships.

Next, in March 1780, Hermione La Fayette began her journey in the War of Independence with 316 crew members. It leaves from the port of Rochefort with the Marquis de La Fayette who is in charge of a secret mission. Meet George Washington in Boston and support him economically and militarily. The French watched the North American coastline and fought against English frigates for almost two years through campaigns to protect allied trade and attack the enemy.

In June 1780 one of the most notable battles occurred in the chronicle of the frigate Hermione La Fayette. This is because it fights against four English ships, among which is the frigate Iris. From the French ship its cannons and 1,250 rifles and blunderbusses are fired 260 times. 10 men die and 37 are injured, including the commander and his assistant. A month later, in Newport, the 5,500 men of the Count of Rochambeau’s expeditionary force disembark. This is sent by Louis XVI from the town of Brest to support the American insurgents.

CHRONICLE FRIGATE HERMIONE LA FAYETTE: VICTORY IN YORKTOWN AND RETURN

In May 1781, the reception of the United States Congress and the Council of State of Pennsylvania takes place aboard Hermione La Fayette. An official dinner is held there in the presence of the Marquis de La Fayette and Samuel Huntington, president of the Congress. This meeting is a definitive test of the friendship between the two countries.

Two months later, on the coast of Île Royale, the frigates Hermione and Astrée encounter a convoy escorted by six English ships, which they attack. It is the naval battle of Louisbourg, in which two English ships finally lower their flag. The material damage is extensive, especially to the rigging, and Hermione records twenty-two victims. This confrontation is captured by the frigate’s auxiliary lieutenant Mullon, present on board, and later painted by Auguste-Louis de Rossel de Cercy.

The frigate Hermione La Fayette has to go through a ‘workshop’ until September 10th, so it remains in Boston to fix all its damage. It gives him time, however, to participate in the siege of Yorktown in October 1781. This battle pits the allies, with the Count of Rochambeau at the forefront, against the English, led by Lord Cornwallis. After three weeks of dispute, the latter surrenders, with a quarter of the British forces fighting in the war. The victory at Yorktown led to the consequent Treaty of Versailles, which was signed in 1783, and the independence of the thirteen British colonies, which became the United States of America.

After this achievement, the chronicle of the frigate Hermione La Fayette in America closes. First, by setting sail on February 2nd from the United States and, second, by dropping anchor in the French harbor of Basques twenty-three days later.
