History of the Belem Training Ship: The French Navigable Monument is 125 years

The French Training Ship Belem celebrates this 2021 one hundred and twenty-five years of history. It was launched in 1896 with a steel hull at the Dubigeon shipyard in Nantes for a purely commercial use between France and Brazil and the Indies for the transport of goods such as sugar or cocoa. To commemorate this important date, what better way to talk about its life, also full of great importance.

First, we must highlight the enormous measures of the Belem training ship. The boat is 51 meters length, not counting the 7 meters of the bowsprit, by 8.80 meters of maximum beam. In addition, it has three large masts 58 meters height.

Thanks to the efforts and money of its various owners, the Gallic ship is currently the last three-masted sailing ship to sail in all of Europe. In addition, it is the most precious jewel of the naval heritage of France. In this sense, the Belem received the classification of Historical Monument on February 27, 1984.

Throughout its history, the Belem school ship has suffered many mishaps and inconveniences, as happens with almost all old ships that still ply the waters of the Earth. This long-lived cargo sailboat passed alternately by English, Italian and again French hands.

With the successive implantation of the steamship, the sailboats of maritime routes gradually disappeared. In 1914 it happened to the Belem when it was acquired by the Duke of Westminster, who decided to transform the ship into an excellent leisure boat. Curiously, it had to be docked on the English Isle of Wight for several years because of the bloody World War I.

HISTORY OF BELEM TRAINING SHIP: AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE SAILBOAT

At the beginning of the 20s of the last century, another lover of the Belem school ship, in this case, Arthur Ernest Guinness, bought the three-masted sailboat and went around the world with his whole family. As mentioned previously, the French ship also passed through Italian hands since 1951, establishing itself as the Italian training ship.

The Belem was motorized and renamed for various uses – luxury cruise and training ship. Finally, he was discovered by chance in Venice in a sorry state in the late 1970s by a nostalgic hobbyist.

Purchased with the support of a large French bank, the sailboat returned to its native country in 1979. The bank financed the Belem Foundation, which began its restoration. Currently, the Belem training ship is now converted to cabotage as it offers introductory and discovery courses for enthusiasts. It is destined for the French Navy for the training of its cabin boys, appearing also in the great meetings of traditional sailboats.The last works carried out have been the restoration of the furniture with mahogany wood from Cuba.

Belem Training Ship Model. 1:75 Faithful Wooden Replica of the French Boat

Ship Hull Construction: Assembly of a Wooden Boat Model (III)

Once the modeler who starts in the world of ship modeling has prepared the workshop and has supplied the necessary tools for modeling according to the skill level, the ship model lover can begin to know everything about the ship hull construction of the boat model thanks to this post.

On this way, the steps that will be undertaken to carry out this purpose are divided as follows. Firstly, we emphasize that it is necessary to check the contents of the modeling kit, so that the modeler becomes familiar with the shapes of the different parts. Also, as most of these kits, in this case ship modeling, have a list of parts, we recommend that you make sure that all parts are present. SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: KEEL AND FRAMES OF THE SHIP MODEL

The next action would be the assembly of the keel. It is the fundamental area of the ship’s model structure. It goes from the bow to the stern of the ship longitudinally on the exact center of the model, since everything will be built from this part.

Remember to take the drawings that show the hull assembly and hang them in front of you, at your workshop. On this way, you can quickly and clearly see how to assemble each part.

The next step would be to adjust the frames to the keel, although the modeler must first make sure that they are not broken. The good thing about Artesania Latina modeling kits is that you don’t have to file the frames before they are placed. They are ready to fit. Just do not paste them until you see that, once placed, all are perfectly.

ASSEMBLY OF SHIP MODEL DECK AND MASTS

Afterwards, the modeler must check and fit the decks of the wooden ship model. This action has a great relevance since the decks will make the keel straight, and it help align the frames.

Small scale models, usually aimed at beginner modelers, only have one deck, thus facilitating the work of the novice. Never force the cover on the frames when assembling it, be very careful, or it will yield and damage the hull construction.

As for the installation of the masts, Artesania Latina’s ship miniatures facilitate the assembly to the modelers, because they will only have to insert the masts through holes arranged for it on the deck and the keel. Speaking about other brands, you have to put some wooden blocks to hold the mâsts. But we will comment this later, although we show you below where they would be inserted.

SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: BOW AND STERN OF THE NAVAL MODEL

It is time to assemble and fit the bow and stern parts – the stern reinforcement is not necessary on Artesania Latina’s boat models because it comes to ‘die’ at the end of the last frame-, which will provide a solid base to the wooden strips that will finally cover the hull. The parts provided must be symmetrical and follow the shape of the mentioned hull of the wooden ship model.

Once you have seen the good disposition of the frames and that the decks are not bent or sunk, proceed to glue them, as well as the rest of the ship built, with cyanoacrylate for porous materials because you are working with wood. If you choose this last alternative, you could suffer many unwanted setbacks. They are the best friends of the modeler, do not skimp on money in these ones. Good tools for naval modeling will improve the modeler skills, save time and effort, and keep the modeler positive attitude to any kind of challenge.

Like Artesania Latina modeling toolkits, these could be classified into three types: basic, intermediate and expert.

BUY MODELING TOOLS FOR BEGINNERS

The basic tools are essential to build any type of model, without these ones it would be like building a house without cement, concrete or bricks. BUY MODELING TOOLS FOR EXPERTS

Speaking about the modeling tools for experts – if the model is built from 0 without any modeling kit -, these ones require greater skills by the modeler: electric bench sander with disc and belt; electric bench grinder; lathe; mini vacuum cleaner; electric marquetry saw; and electric disc saws.

There are also specific micro tools or mini tools for modeling created by Artesania Latina that any modeler must have in the workshop. They are the Micro Tools: micro moulding scrapers / micro shapers, micro saws, micro rules and micro simulation template in wood, to which we will add two more, it will be a surprise!

TOOLS ORGANIZATION AND MODELER’S WORKSHOP

It is time to organize all the modeling tools and create a workspace, so we will now talk about the modeler’s workshop. This should be as large as possible to be able to build any size of ship model and to house all the necessary tools.

It is convenient that the modeler workshop also has drawers for storing, for example, small tools such as drill bits and blades, and tiny parts of the scale model that is intended to be built so that they do not get lost. You can place the drawers on the table at the ends or behind.

Remember, when you assemble your modeling workshop, arrange the plugs in front of you so that when you use the power tools, the cables reach your work area. Once the day is over, you can unplug them or disconnect them if you use a power strip with switch. Also, on the front, hang in front of where your model is assembling the scale model planes, so you can continually consult any questions about its assembly.

PROTECTION AND GOOD LIGHTNING FOR BUILDING MODELS

It is also important that you protect your work table if you do not want to be full of grooves and holes in the future, therefore, use cutting mats such as these ones: sizes A2, A3 and A4, depending on your needs.

As for the lighting that the room and the table where the modeler works should have, we recommend that you put two white light LED bulbs of 12 watts on the ceiling, and as a direct table light a white light LED bulb, but in this case 2/5 watts. For this last lighting, we strongly recommend our reading lamp with magnifying glass, 60 white LED lights and three magnifications.

Optimum ventilation is essential when you are working at your workshop, keep in mind that you will continually use products with chemicals such as cyanoacrylates – glues -, white glues, varnishes, paints and solvents. If you are very far from a window, it would be convenient to put a fan, odors and fumes exhaust like those that are usually placed in the bathrooms near your mounting area.

Another need for the modeler’s workshop, if you do not live alone, is the installation of a small sink for rinsing, because it is not good idea to clean the products in a place like the kitchen or bathroom if you live with more people.

Building a Ship Model Made of Wood (Part I): Choice of the Modeling Kit

The writing of this post is motivated to help new modelers. Building a ship model made of wood is what you will know, so we are going to introduce you on ship modeling. Of course, you can also clarify some concepts to modelers already initiated or provide other ideas that were still unknown. Swedish Ship Model Vasa 1/65 (II): History of the Unlucky Warship

wLearn about the history of Vasa ship in this post and build the spectacular wooden model of this Swedish warship at 1/65 scale. The Vasa was the flagship of the Swedish crown and empire. Or pretended to be. This is so because a kilometer and a half of being launched at the port of Stockholm, in August 10^th 1628, it sank due to its instability.

WHY AND HOW DID VASA VESSEL SINK?

How did such a great vessel sink in its first voyage? The history of Vasa ship is curious. The Vasa carried a lot of cargo, and not being well stowed so, after a strong gust of wind, it moved to the other side of the warship, thus worsening the capsizing of Swedish naval history benchmark.

Everything happened, according to some investigations, by the impatience of King Gustavus II because of the delays, as it was possible to verify, nobody contradicted him and the ship was launched with the known result.

Other studies assert that the Vasa was designed as a smaller ship than it was after, mainly because of the incorporation of a second battery of cannons, already begun its construction. It seems that, for example, the embrasures were too close to the water, so the entry of the sea to the ship was more feasible; the ship was too tall in relation to its beam; and its center of gravity, therefore, was very high.

Once launched in port of Stockholm, the water began to enter through the embrasures of the cannons lower line. Fifteen minutes later the boat was already at the bottom of the sea. Not because of a strong gust of wind, because there was only a small breeze, but really because of the bad design of the Vasa ship.

HISTORY OF VASA SHIP. NAVIGATION AND ARTILLERY POWER

To boost its naval artillery, the aforementioned monarch ordered the Vasa to be built with 64 bronze cannons arranged in three different bridges. The upper one, the high battery and the low battery. In addition to endowing it with a great power to move 1,200 tons.

This great vessel was built along with three others by order of King Gustavus II. He wanted to have some more advanced war resources on the Thirty Years War against Poland. A large one more, like Vasa size, called Tre Kronor -Three Crowns- and two more of smaller size.

Swedish Ship Model Vasa 1/65 (I): The Most Powerful Warship in 17th Century

After an arduous work of ship modeling for a year and a half, Artesania Latina is pleased to present you its brand new and magnificent Swedish wooden ship model. The Vasa warship model at 1/65 scale, aimed at the most expert modelers who want new challenges. A marvel in terms of detail and difficulty!

Scandinavian warship model Vasa is a great test to check modelers skills. Our partners have spent eight hours a day for twelve months for its assembly. The modeling kit requires patience and meticulousness in detail.

It is a perfect replica of the original ship, which is now in the museum called Vasa in Stockholm (Sweden). Thanks to the Vasa wooden ship model 1/65 the modeler will have entertainment for a long time. You will always be helped by very clarifying step-by-step photographic instructions written in nine languages. Do you want a great challenge? This is yours.

Among the most notable features of the Vasa, of this great Swedish sailboat, was its enormous power. It had to move 1,200 tons of weight and a sail area of 1,150 square meters and 80 tons. A fact that is reflected in our scale model due to its large dimensions: 42’’ length, 34’’ height and 40’’ width.

SUCCESSFUL DECORATION FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL SHIP MODEL: VASA 1/65

What about its decoration! More than a meter of beauty with around 100 sculptures made in die-cast between its stern and, somewhat less, its prow, which provide a colorful rarely seen on ship modeling.

Also, full of meaning, the carvings are divided into five themes. They representing King Gustavo II and his lackeys, lions holding the shield, human faces with different emotions on their faces, angels, sirens and sea creatures and mythological. Moreover, when it was built, it had 700 more than today. It had heroes of the Bible, Roman emperors and Greek gods.

Vasa model ship may preside over any room in which it is placed, providing it with a touch of classical elegance.

But it is not the only thing that the ship modeling kit of the Swedish vessel brings in die-cast, the 64 cannons of port and starboard are also made of this metallic material.

Realism for Ship Models thanks to the Set of 10 Metal Figures for Caravels and Galleons (II)

We continue to report on the set of 10 figures for ship models: caravels and galleons where we had left it. In this sense, we will finish explaining which are the characters that you can find in this Artesania Latina kit.

Martín Alonso Pinzón (1441-1493) and Vicente Yáñez Pinzón (1462-1515). These Spanish sailing brothers were also shipbuilders and explorers. They sailed with Christopher Columbus to the New World in 1492, Martín as captain of La Pinta and Vicente as captain of La Niña.
Rodrigo de Triana (1469-Unknown). He is believed to have been the first European to see America since Leif Ericson.
5 Sailors. Columbus and his captains, obviously, could hardly have accomplished such a feat without the help of their sailors. It is estimated that in such a great endeavor to find new sea routes through the West to the East Indies, between 90 and 120 sailors were needed.

The Set of 10 Metal Figures for Caravels and Galleons 1/65 has been made with the die-cast technique and with the highest quality standards. This consists of using a die casting method.

As an adhesive to stick the figures with fast drying, we recommend our Thick Instant Glue (Cyanoacrylate) Pack 50 gr. & Accelerator Spray 200 ml, which will facilitate assembly for the ship modeler.
