Micro Tools for Modeling: The Expected New Product Catalog 2021-2022

Artesania Latina decided three years ago to create a specific collection of small tools: the Micro Tools for Modeling are aimed at the model building in general, and the assembly of ship models in particular, naval modeling. There were five different types of micro tools for modeling, all made of stainless steel, which were part of Artesania Latina’s catalog: the Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers A (27300) and Micro Moulding Scrapers B (27301), the Micro Saws (27302), the Micro Drawing Set (27325) and the Wooden Simulation Template (27322).

However, after the enormous success among our modelers friends of this type of small size and enormous functionality tool for its precision, Artesania Latina has designed and manufactured five new Micro Tools for Modeling, in order to facilitate to the amateur and professional of this beautiful hobby the daily tasks with the miniature: Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303), Micro Rigging Tools (27321), Micro Moulding Scrapers C (27304), Micro Easy Ratlines Template 6.5 mm (27311) and Micro Centering Ruler (27326).

MICRO TOOLS FOR MODELING: MITRE BOX FOR PRECISION CUTS (27303)

We show you the first brand new micro tool: the Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303). This tiny but resistant and effective tools, useful both for modeling and for all types of crafts, allows the modelers to cut 45 and 90 degrees in two materials: plastic and wood.

With total precision, you can obtain the necessary splits so that the parts fit perfectly, such as small strips for a ship model. For this, the Micro Mitre Box reflects two different units of measurement: millimeters and inches.

This very useful mini tool, presented in photo-etched and also made of stainless steel, so its longevity and reliability are assured, is divided into 4 essential elements: the mitre or miter, the fine saw -for plastics-, the coarse saw -magnificent to work the wood- and the MDF base, ideal to protect the area where the cuts are made with this modeling tool. For optimal use of these Micro Tools for Modeling, it is recommended to incorporate the handle of the Universal Cutter # 5.

MICRO OUTILS FOR MODELING: SHIP MODEL RIGGING TOOLS (27321)

It is a Micro Tool specifically for ship modeling, since it only serves to build the riggings of the model ships. We are talking about the Micro Rigging Tools (27321).

The Micro Rigging Tools are made of stainless steel and it comes in photo-etched format, ensuring its functionality and its nonexistent deterioration by rust or the passage of time.

They are used to place each one of the sails and the cotton threads of any naval scale model, any ship model. Specifically, the blister of the Micro Rigging Tools bring the following items: 5 hooks and pushers in order to easily handle the numerous threads and / or to remove any object of the model ship that makes impossible the access to the ship modeler.

These hooks and pushers, in order to be handled or wielded, need another metal attached to the photo-etched: a steel crosspiece to be assembled with each tool. However, we recommend an added handle like the one belonging to the Universal Cutter # 5.

MICRO MOULDING SCRAPERS / MICRO SHAPERS C: SHAPE BOAT MODELS STRIPS (27304)

Another novelty for 2021 in terms of Micro Tools for Modeling are the Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers C (27304). They are used to mold wooden and plastic strips of any ship, dollhouse or building model, among other scale models. After the success achieved with the other two types of Micro Shapers, A and B, Artesania Latina team has created this third variant. Thus we expand the number of ways with which the aforementioned materials can be worked.

The Micro Moulding Scrapers C are also essential for naval modeling. This set includes 3 high quality metal plates with about 15 or 16 different shapes for each of these. In this way, the modeler can achieve around 45 varied reliefs thanks to these specific micro tools for modeling. The existing measurements in these Micro Shapers C are the following: 1.5×5 mm, 2×5 mm, 1.5×4 mm, 2×4 mm, 3×4 mm and 5×4 mm.

Also included special trapezoidal shapes for 1×3 mm and 1.5×4 mm strips. Micro Moulding Scrapers C also facilitate working with sticks and rods of different diameters to reinforce them. They are fantastic modeling tools for model ships rigging.

Decorate your wooden and plastic models by shaping the materials you work with. Get beautiful and many elementary motifs with these new Micro Shapers C. To do this, sand the material through which the plate is going to pass in the chosen shape. Then take the Micro Moulding Scrapers C and pass it over the wooden or plastic strip being treated. Just repeat that process several times until you achieve the desired shape and … It’s done!

MICRO TEMPLATES FOR EASY RATLINES

The last of the 2021 novelties of Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina are the Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 5 mm (27310), Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 6.5 mm (27311) and Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 8 mm (27312). The set includes three wooden templates with various widths according to the different shrouds. When building any model ship rigging, in addition to making the assembly process easier for you, the micro jigs will save you large amounts of thread when you are focused on the ratlines.

The Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines are placed behind the shrouds. With the side ‘combs’ a zig-zag thread is passed in front of them. Put everything and add a dot of glue on each joint of the shrouds and on the thread that you have put in front. Next, cut off the excess threads. Much better to make the scales so knot by knot at each joint.

We already present a new for 2022 of the Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina: Micro Centering Ruler (27326). It allows building models and other crafts with greater ease and precision as it indicates the center of the parts. Made of high quality stainless steel, the Micro Centering Ruler brings a metric and imperial measurement systems, with 3.93” (10cm) for each side. Initiation to Naval Modeling: Wooden Ship Models for Beginners

Many times, beginners on ship modeling go to Artesania Latina to guide them when it comes the moment to build their first wooden ship models. We are going to show on these two posts the initiation to naval modeling with the products that a new ship modeler can create from our catalog.

WOODEN SHIP MODEL: SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO CAPTAIN’S BOAT (18010)

We start with the wooden model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat for its construction. This boat belonged to the line ship of the 74-cannon line, and we present its 1/25 scale miniature. From the 17th century, it would be part of the well-known Battle of Trafalgar, which Spaniards lost against English navy with Churruca in command, so it was towed and exposed in Gibraltar. Anyone who boarded the ship and entered the captain’s cabin should discover the head as a sign of absolute respect, showing the great relevance of the aforementioned ship.

This fabulous wooden ship model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat is built very similar to the real boat thanks to its design using a false keel and frames. This ship modeling kit contains precisely cut board parts by means of a laser, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. It also has instructions for its assembly on DVD format. Once built, San Juan Nepomuceno Captain’s boat model measures 15.94” x 7.48” x 14.37” (405 x 190 x 365 mm).

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN SHIP MODEL VIKING (19001-N)

We continue with the renewed wooden ship model at 1/75 scale of the Viking ship. This scale model was the pioneer made by Artesania Latina’s and it was aimed to beginners modelers two decades ago. But now we have redesigned it with the latest 3D techniques! Viking is a scale model with history. Not only is it designed for newbies, but also for those expert ship modelers who want to enjoy building a really beautiful and emblematic ship model.

The Viking ship modeling kit includes all the parts of its hull cut by laser on top-quality linden board, wooden and metal decorations (like the two dragon heads), pre-stitched sail ready to be placed, and a stand and a plate. Its assembly is precise and pleasant. The new Viking includes a DVD for computer or laptop -PC or Mac- with clarifying step-by-step instructions and with tutorial videos where we show various modeling techniques and tricks that cannot be taught in a printed version. INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: HMS BOUNTY JOLLY BOAT (19004-N)

Our third proposition for beginners modelers is the Jolly boat wooden model of the great British ship of the 18th century HMS Bounty. Precisely, William Bligh fled with 18 loyal sailors after the riot of his crew on this small boat. In 1787 the HMS Bounty frigate left for the Caribbean in order to transport breadfruit, but the fatal climatic conditions forced them to land in Haiti, where many of the English sailors mixed with the island natives.

Its building system by means of false keel and frames, like the great majority of the scale models of Artesania Latina’s ships, brings its design closer to that of the real ship. The ship modeling kit of the HMS Bounty Jolly boat contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and cotton sails. As a bonus, it contains an wooden exhibition base to be assembled. INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL BON RETOUR (19007)

The fourth option for assembly aimed at novice modelers is the wooden model of the French fishing boat –it was fishing scallops- called Bon Retour, at 1/25 scale, which was used until 1980. Built in 1952 at the shipyards Tertu du Fret, in 1982 Guy Le Cornec undertook its restoration. Currently, the TUD AR MOR association manages the ship with the objective of preserving marine culture.

The ship modeling kit of Bon Retour, the French fishing boat, has an easy assembly thanks to its false keel and frames, which brings the construction of its model closer to that of the real ship. It has high precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and fabric, as well as a complete step-by-step guide in four languages and in full color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL SAINT MALO (19010-N)

The sixth proposal is Saint Malo: it is a type of boat called Doris, and specifically this is French. The 1/20 scale wooden model of this fishing ship, from Canadian origin and from the end of the 19th century, is dedicated to catching cod in Newfoundland banks. It was used to fish long ago in Massachusetts and New Scotland, being introduced in France, Spain and Portugal later. Because of their solvency and solidity, of being cheap and their ease of stowage, the Doris continued to be used as workboats on sailboats and many other motor boats.

It is another fantastic wooden ship model for new modelers to start on this beautiful hobby. Like everyone else, its simple construction system and its simple sail make it easy to assemble, it is beautiful the Saint Malo model ship kit. The modeling kit of this French fishing vessel contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and cotton sails. As a bonus, it brings a wooden exhibition base to be built. WOODEN SHIP MODEL FOR BEGINNERS: SANTISIMA TRINIDAD CAPTAIN’S BOAT (19014)

The sixth alternative for those fans who intend to start in the ship modeling hobby is the 1/50 scale wooden ship model of Santisima Trinidad captain’s boat for its construction. Once finished, the scale model is 14.96’’ (380 mm) length, 3.35’’ (85 mm) width and 9.25’’ (235 mm) height.

The Santisima Trinidad or Holy Trinity (officially Our Lady of the Holy Trinity) was a Spanish ship. It was the largest during the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. It had 120 guns at the beginning, which were later expanded to 140. The Santisima Trinidad was one of the few ships of line of four bridges that existed. Symbol of the power of Spain on the seas, this ship had a tragic end. Firstly, It was defeated on the Battle of Trafalgar. Secondly, it sank when it was towed to Gibraltar by the English.

Ship Hull Construction: Assembly of a Wooden Boat Model (III)

Once the modeler who starts in the world of ship modeling has prepared the workshop and has supplied the necessary tools for modeling according to the skill level, the ship model lover can begin to know everything about the ship hull construction of the boat model thanks to this post.

On this way, the steps that will be undertaken to carry out this purpose are divided as follows. Firstly, we emphasize that it is necessary to check the contents of the modeling kit, so that the modeler becomes familiar with the shapes of the different parts. Also, as most of these kits, in this case ship modeling, have a list of parts, we recommend that you make sure that all parts are present. It is also convenient to see if it brings all the plans and instructions for its construction. (Artesania Latina modeling kits bring them on DVD format).

SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: KEEL AND FRAMES OF THE SHIP MODEL

The next action would be the assembly of the keel. It is the fundamental area of the ship’s model structure. It goes from the bow to the stern of the ship longitudinally on the exact center of the model, since everything will be built from this part.

Remember to take the drawings that show the hull assembly and hang them in front of you, at your workshop. On this way, you can quickly and clearly see how to assemble each part.

The next step would be to adjust the frames to the keel, although the modeler must first make sure that they are not broken. The good thing about Artesania Latina modeling kits is that you don’t have to file the frames before they are placed. They are ready to fit. Just do not paste them until you see that, once placed, all are perfectly.

ASSEMBLY OF SHIP MODEL DECK AND MASTS

Afterwards, the modeler must check and fit the decks of the wooden ship model. This action has a great relevance since the decks will make the keel straight, and it help align the frames.

Small scale models, usually aimed at beginner modelers, only have one deck, thus facilitating the work of the novice. Never force the cover on the frames when assembling it, be very careful, or it will yield and damage the hull construction.

As for the installation of the masts, Artesania Latina’s ship miniatures facilitate the assembly to the modelers, because they will only have to insert the masts through holes arranged for it on the deck and the keel. Speaking about other brands, you have to put some wooden blocks to hold the mâsts. But we will comment this later, although we show you below where they would be inserted.

SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: BOW AND STERN OF THE NAVAL MODEL

It is time to assemble and fit the bow and stern parts – the stern reinforcement is not necessary on Artesania Latina’s boat models because it comes to ‘die’ at the end of the last frame-, which will provide a solid base to the wooden strips that will finally cover the hull. The parts provided must be symmetrical and follow the shape of the mentioned hull of the wooden ship model.

Once you have seen the good disposition of the frames and that the decks are not bent or sunk, proceed to glue them, as well as the rest of the ship built, with cyanoacrylate for porous materials because you are working with wood. Once you have pasted everything, let it dry for at least twenty four hours. We will speak about more steps for ship hull construction on next post.

Building a Ship Model Made of Wood (Part I): Choice of the Modeling Kit

The writing of this post is motivated to help new modelers. Building a ship model made of wood is what you will know, so we are going to introduce you on ship modeling. Of course, you can also clarify some concepts to modelers already initiated or provide other ideas that were still unknown. A built scale ship model represents the effort and perseverance of a modeler to achieve the final result. It will take you many hours, you will encounter conflicting emotions, being positive when successes or negatives when some part of the assembly presents greater difficulties.

In this sense, the best modeling tool that you can use is not made of metal or plastic or wood. It will be the dedication that the modeler gives to the modeler, the passion and perseverance you put. Here we will show you how to build step-by-step a ship miniature. What tools to choose, how to organize and adapt a workshop, what ship modeling kit to choose. Everything so that in the end you spend more hours showing the final product created, this is, the ship model you have built, than assembling it.

Building a ship model made of wood should be shared with the family, involving their partners in the project, whether women or men. It also can be used for encouraging children to help in any aspect of this wonderful hobby. The modeler can thus keep alive the art of assembling ship models for another generation.

CHOICE OF THE RIGHT WOODEN SHIP MODEL

The first thing that a future modeler must face – or one already with knowledge in naval modeling – is the choice of the ship model that you will built. How to choose the ideal kit and modeling tools for each of us? BUILDING A SHIP MODEL MADE OF WOOD: WHAT KIND OF HULL TO CHOOSE

Speaking of the different hull types of the ship models, you will find three different. Firstly, the one piece solids – they don´t need to be built, the beginner does not acquire experience in the assembly of the hull-. Secondly, those that have a structure of frames to assemble and we must put the wooden strips on that structure from a pre-cut laser board – most of those manufactured by Artesania Latina, the one that provides the most knowledge and the most real-. Everyone says that things made or created with love have its own soul. The love for detail leads to more beautiful and optimal results. Also, the love that is shared makes the subject learn more and better about life. The private or public exposure of love produces happiness and satisfaction. In conclusion, the love crosses and demolishes borders. All these forms of love happen on ship modeling and aircraft modeling. Yes, that’s right, with the hobby of building wooden ship models and scale models of fighters -airplanes- made of wood, metal and plastic. And worldwide! That is love of modeling!

Swedish Ship Model Vasa 1/65 (I): The Most Powerful Warship in 17th Century

After an arduous work of ship modeling for a year and a half, Artesania Latina is pleased to present you its brand new and magnificent Swedish wooden ship model. The Vasa warship model at 1/65 scale, aimed at the most expert modelers who want new challenges. A marvel in terms of detail and difficulty!

Scandinavian warship model Vasa is a great test to check modelers skills. Our partners have spent eight hours a day for twelve months for its assembly. The modeling kit requires patience and meticulousness in detail.

It is a perfect replica of the original ship, which is now in the museum called Vasa in Stockholm (Sweden). Thanks to the Vasa wooden ship model 1/65 the modeler will have entertainment for a long time. You will always be helped by very clarifying step-by-step photographic instructions written in nine languages. Do you want a great challenge? This is yours.

Among the most notable features of the Vasa, of this great Swedish sailboat, was its enormous power. It had to move 1,200 tons of weight and a sail area of 1,150 square meters and 80 tons. A fact that is reflected in our scale model due to its large dimensions: 42’’ length, 34’’ height and 40’’ width.

SUCCESSFUL DECORATION FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL SHIP MODEL: VASA 1/65

What about its decoration! More than a meter of beauty with around 100 sculptures made in die-cast between its stern and, somewhat less, its prow, which provide a colorful rarely seen on ship modeling.

Also, full of meaning, the carvings are divided into five themes. They representing King Gustavo II and his lackeys, lions holding the shield, human faces with different emotions on their faces, angels, sirens and sea creatures and mythological. Moreover, when it was built, it had 700 more than today. It had heroes of the Bible, Roman emperors and Greek gods.

Vasa model ship may preside over any room in which it is placed, providing it with a touch of classical elegance.

But it is not the only thing that the ship modeling kit of the Swedish vessel brings in die-cast, the 64 cannons of port and starboard are also made of this metallic material.

Realism for Ship Models thanks to the Set of 10 Metal Figures for Caravels and Galleons (II)

We continue to report on the set of 10 figures for ship models: caravels and galleons where we had left it. In this sense, we will finish explaining which are the characters that you can find in this Artesania Latina kit.

Martín Alonso Pinzón (1441-1493) and Vicente Yáñez Pinzón (1462-1515). These Spanish sailing brothers were also shipbuilders and explorers. They sailed with Christopher Columbus to the New World in 1492, Martín as captain of La Pinta and Vicente as captain of La Niña.
Rodrigo de Triana (1469-Unknown). He is believed to have been the first European to see America since Leif Ericson.
5 Sailors. Columbus and his captains, obviously, could hardly have accomplished such a feat without the help of their sailors. It is estimated that in such a great endeavor to find new sea routes through the West to the East Indies, between 90 and 120 sailors were needed.

The Set of 10 Metal Figures for Caravels and Galleons 1/65 has been made with the die-cast technique and with the highest quality standards. This consists of using a die casting method.

Renewed Santa Maria Caravel Model: More Details, Consistency and Lightness (I)

Extraordinary news! Artesania Latina’s 3D designers and modelers have already developed and finished the renovation project of the Santa Maria Caravel wooden model – it is called nao really – at 1/65 scale. One of the five most important ships in world history.

Ship modeling and fans of this beautiful hobby will be happy when they build this faithful replica. Santa Maria ship scale model has required the latest techniques in design and manufacturing, in addition to having the highest quality materials.

CONTENTS OF NEW MODELING SHIP KIT SANTA MARIA CARAVEL

The modeling kit of this classic ship commanded by Christopher Columbus during the voyage through which he discovered America at the end of the 15th century. Firstly, it contains precious parts of clear birch wood, cut with precision thanks to the laser and fabulous details made of metal and photo-etched. Secondly, it also has sails with reinforced cotton fabric of higher quality, ready to be placed – this model includes cardboard templates to paint the crosses-. Finally, as a gift that was not in the previous version of the caravel, a magnificent wooden base with a nominal metal plate for its exhibition.

Once the building process is finished, the measures of Santa Maria Caravel wooden model are the following: 19.80’’ length, 10.39’’ width and 19.60 height. To achieve that point easily, the instructions have been redesigned completely on DVD. Now the ship modeler can look at a simple step-by-step with a large number of detailed photos. So the assembly of each thread, each block and each rigging is perfectly explained without cumbersome texts full of technical words, not understandable by everyone. No more old instructions for this caravel model!

ESSENTIAL IMPROVEMENTS ON THIS GREAT SHIP MODEL

Artesania Latina’s 3D designers and modelers have made numerous improvements on the Santa Maria Caravel wooden model. Precisely, the most remarkable is the ship structure reform “to give it more consistency and lightness, we had to create many new parts”, says Artesania Latina team.

One of the modelers states that “we have redesigned the false keel, the frames and the decks of the ship. It is one of the biggest novelties not having to use nails to be able to build them, they are only used in some details”.

Precisely, speaking about the decks of the Santa Maria Caravel renewed wooden model, the 3D designer emphasizes that “the system of tabs of the frames has been improved, implanting a greater number of these to implement it, because it did not cover 100% all the parts in the previous version, it was necessary to facilitate, for example, the fitting of its ends and for a perfect alignment without leaving any more loose part”.
