Paddle Steamer Model in Wood: New King of the Mississippi 1/80 Has Already Come to Life

One of the scale models most desired by Artesania Latina friends has returned in 2021 with a renewed appearance and many improvements. The new King of the Mississippi paddle steamer model in wood, 1/80 scale, is a jewel of naval modeling. Next, we are going to detail all the novelties that this fantastic and classic steamboat model incorporates.

Ship Model Building. Wooden Paddle Steamer Model Renewed King of the Mississippi 1/80 (20515).

The 3D redesign and assembly process has been painstakingly developed over months by Artesania Latina designers and modelers. In this way, the miniature replica of the King of the Mississippi can be built very pleasantly.

FUNNY AND PRECISE ASSEMBLY OF WOODEN PADDLE STEAMER MODEL

Among the improvements made, excellent step-by-step color instructions have been created, more elaborate than ever, in DVD format. The objective is that the assembly made by the modeler is enjoyable and precise. The construction process of this wooden paddle steamer model is explained in detail without any doubt. In this sense, 240 digital pages with hundreds and hundreds of photos accompanied by their explanatory captions support this fact.

We cannot forget the numerous online video-tutorials that the modeler can find on our official YouTube channel. They will also save you from any possible trouble. Artesania Latina professionals have made a great effort for the modeler to enjoy naval modeling.

On the other hand, this impressive modeling kit is designed to the millimeter so that the parts fit together perfectly. So, once it’s built, it will look the way it deserves. All parts of hardwoods such as birch and linden are cut by high precision laser. It contains 8 board sheets! The parts of this wooden paddle steamer model are fully assembled. They fit easily in their right, concrete place, thus avoiding headaches.

PHOTO-ETCHED PADDLE STEAMER MODEL: MORE UNITS AND MORE DETAILED PARTS!

The King of the Mississippi paddle steamer model has also been extensively revamped in terms of photoe-etched parts. “This new scale model includes many more photo-etched parts, and much more detailed than the ones that belonged to the old model”, assures Artesania Latina designer, who adds that “windows, door windows, capitals, railings, decorative ribbon of the service chamber rof and stairs”. Contains 2 large photo-etched sheets (11.57” x 6.14” and 10.12” x 4.80”) with never seen before die-cast and brass decoration details.

We start with the windows, which were previously opaque die-cast, and the windows in the doors. “They all now have a more elaborate design, are very easy to assemble and allow light to pass into the different compartments through the transparent acetate”, underlines the professional.

We continue with the ribbon that adorns the ceiling of the service chamber, the exterior railings and the capitals. They have been made much more stylized than the previous ones. The contrast of colors of these parts in white with the colors, dyes and varnishes used on floors and walls of the rest of the ship is spectacular.

PHOTO-ETCHED DETAILS OF THE NEW STAIRS AND CAPTAIN’S CAB

Finally, the new photo-etched stairs of this 1/80 scale model “have been very popular”, according to the modeling friends who have had the kit in their hands. Compared to the old ones, their design is now much more delicate and they are easier to assemble. “Putting special care in painting, gluing and building the photo-etched – which makes up the railings – with the steps and handrails, the result obtained is simply extraordinary”, exclaims the designer. As it stands on the prow of the new King of the Mississippi wooden paddle steamer model, it stands out to the first-time appreciator. It’s a great cover letter!

PRE-INSTALLATION TO ILLUMINATE THE MODEL WITH LED LIGHTS

One of the pleasant surprises of this beautiful wooden paddle steamer model is the improvement that has been made so that it has light, shine with its own light. “Small supports have been added in different compartments so that the modeler who wishes can add LED lights and bring to life the scale model of the King of the Mississippi,” explains our 3D designer.

As an informative note, Artesania Latina has, for sale separately, a Set of LED Lights with switch and battery holder, which allows you to play with the effect generated by the fixed lights or the candle effect. It looks like this, impressive!

IMPROVEMENTS OF FUNNELS AND TURBINE, NOW MOBILE!

Other improvements applied to the new King of the Mississippi paddle steamer model made of wood are the funnels and the turbine. As for the former, the scale model has been designed so that if the modeler wants he can, on his own, make the funnels emit smoke. They are hollow.

Find an electronic smoke dispenser – not included in this modeling kit – and attach it to the steamboat model. As the service chamber is ‘detachable’, whenever it deems appropriate it will be able to access the interior of the cabin. There the bases of the funnels are housed to recharge the liquid tank that creates the smoke.

And what about the dazzling new mobile turbine, a dream come true! Our team greatly appreciated the ability to move the blades to recreate the motion of the turbine that pushes the real ship. Thought, planned and done. A system was devised that “allows a small engine to be attached to the stern wall and transmit power to the turbine by means of a rubber band and a pulley”, points out the model maker of the project.

Ship Model Building. Motor of Wooden Paddle Steamer Model Renewed King of the Mississippi 1/80 (20515).

The entire set of aft wall + turbine supports + turbine is practicable. The modeler can thus access the interior and make adjustments to the motor or the rubber band. Should the rubber wear out in the distant future, it could be changed even when the model is finished. The Motion Motor Set will be available for separate sale soon.

BUILD THIS GREAT WOODEN PADDLE STEAMER MODEL

Seeing that our King of the Mississippi paddle steamer model made of wood has movement in its blades, light in different compartments and smoke coming out of the funnels will leave you totally speechless. In addition, its large dimensions, once built, also help to do this: 25.98” (660 mm) length, 11.81” (300 mm) height and 5.11” (130 mm) width. The modeling kit includes adhesive fabric flags and pedestal with nameplate. Build this world naval benchmark at your own modeler workshop!

Small Model Building Tools: Discover the Micro Tools Collection

In the previous post, we discovered what are the news for 2021 of the collection of small model building tools called Micro Tools, made by Artesania Latina. In this article, we will show which are the products of this type of small tools that have enchanted our modelers friends in recent years.

MICRO SHAPERS A & B (27300 y 27301): SMALL MODEL BUILDING TOOLS

These are the most the best-selling Micro Tools for modeling and crafts, on its two versions, no doubt: the Micro Shapers A (27300) and the Micro Shapers B (27301).

Small Model Building Tools. Micro Shapers A & B.

Artesania Latina’s Micro Shapers are the ideal tools to mold any type of model: a boat, a dollhouse or, for example, a building. By means of these, the modeler or crafts artisan can shape or outline both plastic and wooden strips, thus creating moldings with different shapes to decorate the creations.

Small Model Building Tools. Micro Shapers A & B.

Presented in packs of three units, both type A and type B. Each of the three plates comes with 15/16 profiling shapes thanks to which the modeler or the crafts artisan can get more than forty different reliefs and designs to decorate your creations.

The Micro Shapers A (27300) have the following measures: 0.039’’ x 0.118’’, 0.039’’ x 0.157’’, 0.039’’ x 0.196’’, 0.078’’ x 0.078’’, 0.078’’ x 0.157’’, 0.078’’ x 0.196’’ and 0.157’’ x 0.157’’. The Micro Shapers B (27301), which comes next: 0.059’’ x 0.118’’, 0.059’’ x 0.157’’, 0.059’’ x 0.196’’, 0.078’’ x 0.118’’, 0.118’’ x 0.118’’, 0.118’’ x 0.196’’ and 0.196’’ x 0.196’’.

How do both Micro Shapers work? Exactly, these small model building tools have to be used passing them over the wooden or plastic strip several times until they can achieve the desired effect. Of course, previously it is recommended to use a sandpaper on the material that is going to work to suppress burrs, roughness or small irregularities. On this aspect, it would be an idea to slide it gently in one direction, upwards. To know how to work with this tool through a video tutorial, we leave one below these lines.

MICRO SAWS (27302) FOR PRECISION CUTS IN WOOD, PLASTIC AND RESIN

Also made of stainless steel and presented in high quality photo-etched, the Micro Saws is a kit that also belongs to the small model building tools collection Micro Tools. It is essential for any modeler or crafts fan who needs to make precision cuts, for example, in wood, plastic and resin. Any part that needs to be cut, and if it is even smaller, has now the right tool: our Micro Saws.

Small Model Building Tools. Micro Saws, Scriber and Adhesive Applicators.

The best thing about this set of saws is that it does not come with one or two, but six micro saws for wood and plastic. It also has a scriber and twoapplicators for cyanoacrylate (glue).

Small Model Building Tools. Micro Saws, Scriber and Adhesive Applicators.

The scriber is used, above all, in plastic models, to make decorative lines or stripes: airplanes, boats, cars, etc. On the other hand, with the two cyanoacrylate applicators, you can paste any scale model parts or any manual work with extreme precision.

As usual, for a better use of the Micro Tools -except for the Micro Shapers and the Micro Template of Wooden Simulation- Artesania Latina recommends the use of the universal cutter handles.

MICRO RULERS (27325): SMALL MODEL BUILDING TOOLS

The Micro Drawing Set or Micro Rulers Set is designed expressly for modelers and manufactured in stainless steel. It has rules, triangles and parallel ruler, all of these very useful to build models when taking accurate measurements in small dimensions.

Small Model Building Tools. Micro Rulers Set or Micro Drawing Set.

The two malleable rulers (one of 1.96’’/50 mm and one of 3.93’’/100 mm), with metric and imperial systems, that brings the pack are perfect to even measure model curved parts. The modeler can fold them when needed and then put them back on its natural position. They can not only serve for the model maker, but also for any crafts fan.

Small Model Building Tools. Micro Rulers Set or Micro Drawing Set.

In addition, the Micro Drawing Set also comes with two squares, both with chamfered corners to avoid glue. They are very useful when used as mounting brackets. And, finally, a parallel ruler.

In order to facilitate workshop organization, all the rulers have a hole to hang them in the place you want. To check the components of this set on video, click on ‘Play’ under these lines.

MICRO TEMPLATE FOR WOODEN SIMULATION (27322): THE NECESSARY CLASSIC TOUCH

The last of the tools for modeling and crafts belonging to Artesania Latina’s Micro Tools Collection, but no less important, is the Micro Template for Wooden Simulation.

Micro Template for Wooden Simulation.

With this tool, with a good varnish and with the help of an airbrush, the modelers and crafts artisans can provide a wooden color to their scale models, doll houses or any object, thus acquiring a total resemblance to the commented material.

This type of painting greatly favors, for example, our wooden and metal aircraft models: Fokker Dr. I (20350) and Sopwith Camel (20351).

Micro Tools for Modeling: The Expected New Product Catalog 2021-2022

Artesania Latina decided three years ago to create a specific collection of small tools: the Micro Tools for Modeling are aimed at the model building in general, and the assembly of ship models in particular, naval modeling. There were five different types of micro tools for modeling, all made of stainless steel, which were part of Artesania Latina’s catalog: the Micro Shapers A (27300) and Micro Shapers B (27301), the Micro Saws (27302), the Micro Drawing Set (27325) and the Wooden Simulation Template (27322).

Micro Tools for Modeling. 2021-2022 Catalog and New Products.

However, after the enormous success among our modelers friends of this type of small size and enormous functionality tool for its precision, Artesania Latina has designed and manufactured five new Micro Tools for Modeling, in order to facilitate to the amateur and professional of this beautiful hobby the daily tasks with the miniature: Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303), Micro Rigging Tools (27321), Micro Shapers C (27304), Micro Easy Ratlines Template 6.5 mm (27311) and Micro Centering Ruler (27326).

MICRO TOOLS FOR MODELING: MITRE BOX FOR PRECISION CUTS (27303)

We show you the first brand new micro tool: the Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303). This tiny but resistant and effective tools, useful both for modeling and for all types of crafts, allows the modelers to cut 45 and 90 degrees in two materials: plastic and wood.

With total precision, you can obtain the necessary splits so that the parts fit perfectly, such as small strips for a ship model. For this, the Micro Mitre Box reflects two different units of measurement: millimeters and inches.

Micro Tools for Modeling. Micro Mitre Box with Precision Saws.

This very useful mini tool, presented in photo-etched and also made of stainless steel, so its longevity and reliability are assured, is divided into 4 essential elements: the mitre or miter, the fine saw -for plastics-, the coarse saw -magnificent to work the wood- and the MDF base, ideal to protect the area where the cuts are made with this modeling tool. For optimal use of these Micro Tools for Modeling, it is recommended to incorporate the handle of the Universal Cutter # 5.

It is not the only novelty for this year from Artesania Latina if we talk about the commented micro tools for modeling and crafts, then we show you the other great idea in the form of mini utensil.

MICRO OUTILS FOR MODELING: SHIP MODEL RIGGING TOOLS (27321)

It is a Micro Tool specifically for ship modeling, since it only serves to build the riggings of the model ships. We are talking about the Micro Rigging Tools (27321).

The Micro Rigging Tools are made of stainless steel and it comes in photo-etched format, ensuring its functionality and its nonexistent deterioration by rust or the passage of time.

Micro Tools for Modeling. Micro Rigging Tools for Ship Models.

They are used to place each one of the sails and the cotton threads of any naval scale model, any ship model. Specifically, the blister of the Micro Rigging Tools bring the following items: 5 hooks and pushers in order to easily handle the numerous threads and / or to remove any object of the model ship that makes impossible the access to the ship modeler.

These hooks and pushers, in order to be handled or wielded, need another metal attached to the photo-etched: a steel crosspiece to be assembled with each tool. However, we recommend an added handle like the one belonging to the Universal Cutter # 5.

MICRO SHAPERS C: SHAPE BOAT MODELS STRIPS (27304)

Another novelty for 2021 in terms of Micro Tools for Modeling are the Micro Shapers C (27304). They are used to mold wooden and plastic strips of any ship, dollhouse or building model, among other scale models. After the success achieved with the other two types of Micro Shapers, A and B, Artesania Latina team has created this third variant. Thus we expand the number of ways with which the aforementioned materials can be worked.

Micro Shapers C.

The Micro Shapers C also essential for naval modeling. This set includes 3 high quality metal plates with about 15 or 16 different shapes for each of these. In this way, the modeler can achieve around 45 varied reliefs thanks to these specific micro tools for modeling. The existing measurements in these Micro Shapers C are the following: 1.5×5 mm, 2×5 mm, 1.5×4 mm, 2×4 mm, 3×4 mm and 5×4 mm.

Also included special trapezoidal shapes for 1×3 mm and 1.5×4 mm strips. Micro Shapers C also facilitate working with sticks and rods of different diameters to reinforce them. They are fantastic modeling tools for model ships rigging.

Decorate your wooden and plastic models by shaping the materials you work with. Get beautiful and many elementary motifs with these new Micro Shapers C. To do this, sand the material through which the plate is going to pass in the chosen shape. Then take the Micro Shapers C and pass it over the wooden or plastic strip being treated. Just repeat that process several times until you achieve the desired shape and … It’s done!

MICRO TEMPLATES FOR EASY RATLINES 6.5 MM (27311)

The last of the 2021 novelties of Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina are the Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 6.5 mm (27311). The set includes three wooden templates with various widths according to the different shrouds. When building any model ship rigging, in addition to making the assembly process easier for you, the micro jigs will save you large amounts of thread when you are focused on the ratlines.

Micro Tools for Modeling. Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 6.5 mm.The Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 6.5 mm are placed behind the shrouds. With the side ‘combs’ a zig-zag thread is passed in front of them. Put everything and add a dot of glue on each joint of the shrouds and on the thread that you have put in front. Next, cut off the excess threads. Much better to make the scales so knot by knot at each joint.

Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 6.5 mm.

Finally, we recommend you watch the video below these lines. There you can see how are the shiny new Micro Tools for Modeling that the Artesania Latina team has designed and created in 2021. Next post, we will talk about all the previous Micro Tools in the catalog, a total success among our modelers friends.

NEW FOR 2022! MICRO TOOLS FOR MODELING: MICRO CENTERING RULER (27326)

We already present a new for 2022 of the Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina: Micro Centering Ruler (27326). It allows building models and other crafts with greater ease and precision as it indicates the center of the parts. Made of high quality stainless steel, the Micro Centering Ruler brings a metric and imperial measurement systems, with 3.93” (10cm) for each side. The 0 is on the center of the ruler, which includes a protractor and small holes to mark the measurements with a mechanical pencil or pencil. Indispensable so that everything is square!

Naval Modeling for Beginners: Initiation Wooden Ship Models (II)

We continue with the article we left last week about naval modeling for beginners. In other words, we continue to show the large number of wooden ship models for beginners in the Artesania Latina catalog. In this way, the future modeler will know which models he wants to build.

NAVAL MODELING FOR BEGINNERS: FISHING SHIP MODEL LA PROVENÇALE (19017)

What do we offer as a eighth proposal of a ship model for the new model makers that start on this hobby? The 1/20 scale model of the French Côte d’Azur fishing ship called the La Provençale. Once the model is finished, it is 12’’ (305 mm) length, 13.18” (335 mm) height and 3.93’’ (100 mm) width. With a typically Mediterranean line thanks to its two Latin sails, this boat used to be made with the remains of the wood used for the construction of larger fisheries.

La Provençale ship modeling kit contains a set of high-precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and hand-sewn cotton sails, as well as our complete step-by-step guide in full color, accompanied by real-scale plans of the finished model, on DVD format.

Naval Modeling for Beginners: Wooden Ship Model La Provençale (19017)

NAVAL MODELING FOR BEGINNERS: WHALING SHIP MODEL PROVIDENCE (19018)

The ninth proposed wooden ship model for beginners modelers is the 1/25 scale model of the 19th century New England whaling ship called Providence, present in the fictional literary work Moby Dick. Just imagine the great difficulty and skill of whalers when hunting a whale in a small boat like this.

Its construction system is very similar to the real ship. The modeling kit of the scale ship model Providence consists of high precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods – American cherry tree-, brass, cast iron and hand-sewn cotton sails ready to be placed, as well as our complete step guide step-by-step in full colour on DVD format. Once the model is finished, it measures 12.20” (310 mm) length, 9.44” (240 mm) height and 3.07” (78 mm) width.

Naval Modeling for Beginners: Wooden Ship Model Providence (19018).

WOODEN SHIP MODEL LIFEBOAT JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO (19019)

The tenth selection of a wooden ship model for the new modelers is Juan Sebastian Elcano’s lifeboat, Spanish Navy sailboat schooner and school ship. The 1/35 scale model, once finished, is 11.02’’ (280 mm) length, 3.54’’ (90 mm) height and 3.62’’ (92 mm) width. This boat was called thus by the Spanish explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano, captain of the expedition – after Fernando de Magallanes death -, who completed the first round the world in 1522. Launched in 1927 in Cadiz.

Juan Sebastian Elcano’s lifeboat ship modeling kit consists of laser-cut board parts, noble woods, brass and cast iron, as well as our complete step-by-step guide on DVD format.

WOODEN SHIP MODEL SECTION OF GALLEON SAN FRANCISCO (20403)

The eleventh proposition? The wooden ship model, at scale 1/50, of the section of the Spanish galleon called San Francisco of the 16th and 17th centuries. Galleons were the most powerful ships of the time and backbone of the Spanish maritime power during the aforementioned era. They were perfect thanks to their fusion of great transport capacity and firepower, which made them ideal for long ocean crossings between Spain and the Indies.

Easy construction and resembling its real construction for its construction system using false keel and frames, the ship modeling kit of the section of the Spanish galleon San Francisco will allow to examine in depth the construction and structure of the ship, as well as all the detail of its three decks. The scale model features high precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. It also includes a small support with metal plate. For assembly you can follow our complete step-by-step guide in full color on DVD format. Once the model is finished, it measures 4.72” (120 mm) length, 26.14” (664 mm) height and 12.28” (312 mm) width.

NAVAL MODELING FOR BEGINNERS: WOODEN SHIP MODEL SWIFT (22110N)

The twelfth wooden ship model for novice modelers we propose is the 1/50 scale model of the Swift, a beautiful 1805 Virginia (USA) pilot ship, which guided the large ships at the entrance and exit of the ports. This type of boat evolution, given its great operation, are the famous Baltimore Clippers.

The Swift modeling kit includes a DVD for a computer or laptop (PC or Mac) with step-by-step assembly guide, videos with tips and tricks, a 1/1 scale model scale, pre-laser-cut wooden parts, stitched sails included, pre-cut brass parts and base-stand included. Once the model is finished, it measures 24.48” (622 mm) length, 17.24” (438 mm) height and 4.72” (120 mm) width.

Naval Modeling for Beginners: Wooden Ship Model Swift (22110N).

NAVAL MODELING FOR BEGINNERS: WOODEN SHIP MODEL LIFEBOAT RMS TITANIC (19016)

We arrived at the 12 + 1 proposal of ship modeling for beginners! The 1/35 scale wooden ship model of the RMS Titanic’s lifeboat -one of the twenty-, so you can remember the majesty of the luxurious ship to which it belonged. The RMS Titanic had been projected to have thirty-two lifeboats, but when it was shipwrecked – April 15th, 1912 – it only carried two tens. Owned by the White Star Line company, it was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of its time. During its maiden voyage between Southampton and New York it collided with an iceberg and sank in the icy waters off the coast of Newfoundland.

Easy to build – it has no rigging – it is a scale model suitable for novice modelers because, like almost all Artesania Latina models, it has a construction system using false keel and frames, which makes it resemble the real one. The RMS Titanic lifeboat modeling kit has the following elements: high-precision, high-quality laser pre-cut board parts; noble wood and veneers; high quality photo-etched brass parts; cotton threads; support-stand to expose the model once finished and step-by-step guide super detailed with numerous images on DVD format. Once the model is finished, it measures 11.22” (285 mm) length, 2.16” (55 mm) height and 3.74” (95 mm) width.

WOODEN AND PLASTIC TRAINING SHIP MODEL NEW JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO (22260)

The fourteenth proposal of naval modeling for beginners is a renewed model in 2021. The wooden and plastic ship model to build from Spanish training ship Juan Sebastian Elcano, at 1/250 scale. The naval modeling kit of the Juan Sebastian Elcano of the Spanish Navy is aimed at beginners modelers because its step-by-step guide is very complete and is presented in videos on DVD format, no printed instructions are included. In addition, it comes with the hull of the ship prefabricated in plastic, so its construction is less difficult. It is perfect for a first contact with this wonderful hobby.

The contents of the box of this faithful miniature naval replica, in addition to the hull, are parts of high precision laser cut board, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and sails. It also has new photo-etched details and includes the figurehead, the flag and the name plate to build the great sailing ship Esmeralda, which is a training ship exactly like the Elcano but from the Chilean Navy. Upon completion, the model measures 17.91” (455 mm) length, 10.03” (255 mm) height, and 4.33” (110 mm) width.

NAVAL MODELING FOR BEGINNERS: FISHING SHIP MODEL JOLIE BRISE (22180)

The penultimate proposal for naval modeling for beginners is the buildable wooden model ship of the French cutter Jolie Brise, at 1/50 scale. From pilot boat it was used as a fishing boat due to the appearance of boats with steam engines.

The Jolie Brise ship model building kit features high precision laser cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. Also, it has cotton sails cut and sewn by hand ready to be placed. Build it with our comprehensive, full-color, step-by-step guide on DVD, accompanied by drawings of the finished model. The kit does not contain printed instructions. Once it is finished, the model is 19.88” (505 mm) length, 20.27” (515 mm) height and 4.05” (103 mm) width.

NAVAL MODELING FOR BEGINNERS: FISHING SHIP MODEL LA CANCALAISE (22190)

The last model we propose of naval modeling for beginners is the model of the famous French ship La Cancalaise, at 1/50 scale. La Cancalaise is the fishing boat with the most sails in France and was launched on April 18, 1987. Its trees are simply very elegant.

La Cancalaise naval modeling kit is made of wood and has cotton sails ready to be placed. Step-by-step instructions on DVD, no printed instructions included. Once it is finished, the model is 25.59” (650 mm) length, 20.27” (515 mm) height and 3.93” (100 mm) width.

Initiation to Naval Modeling: Wooden Ship Models for Beginners

Many times, beginners on ship modeling go to Artesania Latina to guide them when it comes the moment to build their first wooden ship models. We are going to show on these two posts the initiation to naval modeling with the products that a new ship modeler can create from our catalog.

WOODEN SHIP MODEL: SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO CAPTAIN’S BOAT (18010)

We start with the wooden model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat for its construction. This boat belonged to the line ship of the 74-cannon line, and we present its 1/25 scale miniature. From the 17th century, it would be part of the well-known Battle of Trafalgar, which Spaniards lost against English navy with Churruca in command, so it was towed and exposed in Gibraltar. Anyone who boarded the ship and entered the captain’s cabin should discover the head as a sign of absolute respect, showing the great relevance of the aforementioned ship.

This fabulous wooden ship model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat is built very similar to the real boat thanks to its design using a false keel and frames. This ship modeling kit contains precisely cut board parts by means of a laser, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. It also has instructions for its assembly on DVD format. Once built, San Juan Nepomuceno Captain’s boat model measures 15.94” x 7.48” x 14.37” (405 x 190 x 365 mm).

Initiation to Naval Modeling: San Juan Nepomuceno Captain's Boat Wooden Model (18010).

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN SHIP MODEL VIKING (19001N)

We continue with the renewed wooden ship model at 1/75 scale of the Viking ship. This scale model was the pioneer made by Artesania Latina’s and it was aimed to beginners modelers two decades ago. But now we have redesigned it with the latest 3D techniques! Viking is a scale model with history. Not only is it designed for newbies, but also for those expert ship modelers who want to enjoy building a really beautiful and emblematic ship model.

The Viking ship modeling kit includes all the parts of its hull cut by laser on top-quality linden board, wooden and metal decorations (like the two dragon heads), pre-stitched sail ready to be placed, and a stand and a plate. Its assembly is precise and pleasant. The new Viking includes a DVD for computer or laptop -PC or Mac- with clarifying step-by-step instructions and with tutorial videos where we show various modeling techniques and tricks that cannot be taught in a printed version. Once finished, the model is 11.53’’ (293 mm) length, 10.82’’ (275 mm) height and 14.2’’ (360 mm) width.

Initiation to Naval Modeling: Viking Ship Wooden Model (19001N).

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: HMS BOUNTY JOLLY BOAT (19004)

Our third proposition for beginners modelers is the Jolly boat wooden model of the great British ship of the 18th century HMS Bounty. Precisely, William Bligh fled with 18 loyal sailors after the riot of his crew on this small boat. In 1787 the HMS Bounty frigate left for the Caribbean in order to transport breadfruit, but the fatal climatic conditions forced them to land in Haiti, where many of the English sailors mixed with the island natives.

Its mounting system by means of false keel and frames, like the great majority of the scale models of Artesania Latina’s ships, brings its design closer to that of the real ship. The ship modeling kit of the HMS Bounty Jolly boat contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. Its construction is easy thanks to our complete step-by-step instructions in full-color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the completed model on DVD format. Once built, HMS Bounty Jolly Boat model measures 16.33” x 13.38” x 14.29” (415 x 340 x 363 mm).

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL BON RETOUR (19007)

The fourth option for assembly aimed at novice modelers is the wooden model of the French fishing boat –it was fishing scallops- called Bon Retour, at 1/25 scale, which was used until 1980. Built in 1952 at the shipyards Tertu du Fret, in 1982 Guy Le Cornec undertook its restoration. Currently, the TUD AR MOR association manages the ship with the objective of preserving marine culture.

The ship modeling kit of Bon Retour, the French fishing boat, has an easy assembly thanks to its false keel and frames, which brings the construction of its model closer to that of the real ship. It has high precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and fabric, as well as a complete step-by-step guide in four languages and in full color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. Everything on DVD format. Once built, Bon Retour fishing ship model measures 15.55” x 4.05” x 14.60” (395 x 103 x 371 mm).

WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL SAINT MALO (19010)

The sixth proposal is Saint Malo: it is a type of boat called Doris, and specifically this is French. The 1/20 scale wooden model of this fishing ship, from Canadian origin and from the end of the 19th century, is dedicated to catching cod in Newfoundland banks. It was used to fish long ago in Massachusetts and New Scotland, being introduced in France, Spain and Portugal later. Because of their solvency and solidity, of being cheap and their ease of stowage, the Doris continued to be used as workboats on sailboats and many other motor boats.

It is another fantastic wooden ship model for new modelers to start on this beautiful hobby. Like everyone else, its simple construction system and its simple sail make it easy to assemble, it is beautiful the Saint Malo model ship kit. The modeling kit of this French fishing vessel contains high-precision laser-cut board pieces, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric, as well as a complete step-by-step guide in full color on DVD format, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. Once built, Saint Malo fishing ship model measures 13.58” x 3.54” x 8.66” (345 x 90 x 220 mm).

WOODEN SHIP MODEL FOR BEGINNERS: SANTISIMA TRINIDAD CAPTAIN’S BOAT (19014)

The sixth alternative for those fans who intend to start in the ship modeling hobby is the 1/50 scale wooden ship model of Santisima Trinidad captain’s boat for its construction. Once finished, the scale model is 14.96’’ (380 mm) length, 3.35’’ (85 mm) width and 9.25’’ (235 mm) height.

The Santisima Trinidad or Holy Trinity (officially Our Lady of the Holy Trinity) was a Spanish ship. It was the largest during the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. It had 120 guns at the beginning, which were later expanded to 140. The Santisima Trinidad was one of the few ships of line of four bridges that existed. Symbol of the power of Spain on the seas, this ship had a tragic end. Firstly, It was defeated on the Battle of Trafalgar. Secondly, it sank when it was towed to Gibraltar by the English.

The modeling kit of Santisima Trinidad captain’s boat is also very easy to build, its assembly is close to the real ship one. It has high precision laser cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and sails ready to be placed, as well as complete step-by-step instructions on DVD format.

HMS ENDEAVOUR NEW CAPTAIN’S BOAT MODEL (19005)

The seventh option for beginners friends of ship modeling is the 1/50 scale wooden model of the HMS Endeavour captain’s boat, renewed in 2022. The English ship HMS Endeavour, launched in the second half of the 18th century, was in charge of discovering new territories such as Australia and Tahiti. In addition to numerous islands, plant and animal species, and how to calculate with great accuracy the position in length by the maths.

The modeling kit of the HMS Endeavour captain’s boat features high-precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods such as birch, hand-stitched sails and cotton threads. It also brings a base stand for boat exposure once is finished, brass, cast and woven parts. You can build it thanks to our complete step-by-step guide in full color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. Both on DVD format. Once built, HMS Endeavour captain’s boat model measures 16.53” x 3.54” x 10.62” (420 x 90 x 270 mm).

Finishing Touch for Ship Model: Assembly Details (VI)

Once the hull and the rigging are built, it is the turn to give the finishing touch for the ship model made of wood, build and / or place the lifeboat or shallop – if the ship modeling kit brings it -, to paint and to put the anchors and flags -and the rest of the details that the box contains-.

The lifeboats that come assembled only need to be carved and filed the possible burrs, and be painted and put on the lifeboat, however, there are some kits that force the construction of the miniature, which will provide, for sure, more entertainment and a new challenge for the ship modeler.

When you have to build the lifeboat, make sure the frames are properly centered on the keel before gluing them. Cover the outer edges of the frames with masking tape. Place a strip inside the frames as a temporary crossbar to help keep them in place. Adjust the strips as you would like on any boat and use double hull cover, making sure that the second layer covers the mistakes you may have made in the first phase. Once the second cover is finished, remove the frames and sand inside of the lifeboat’s hull.

The anchors have undergone numerous modifications over the centuries. In the Artesania Latina modeling kits, the anchors are already manufactured, in the absence of sanding and painting.

At the beginning of time, the anchors were placed on the outside of the ship’s hull, tied with the chain to it. Later, the anchors were stored inside the hull.

FINISHING TOUCH FOR SHIP MODEL MADE OF WOOD: VARNISHES AND AIRBRUSHING

Now we need to know how to achieve the perfect finishing touch for any ship model made of wood, for any naval modeling kit. Depending on the period and style of the ship model you are building, the modeler can either leave the model to scale with its natural wooden color or paint it. Also, you can take an intermediate action: leave the natural color above the waterline and paint the hull under it. Of course, avoid glossy finishes on the vintage boat models when varnishing.

Therefore, use matte acrylic varnishes. Apply a first layer, let it dry and sand gently with very fine sandpaper. Then, give another layer of varnish and sand again. As an alternative, you can use varnishes on an acrylic base already applied to obtain a darker shade and greater protection. Of course, in the most modern scale ship models you can use medium acrylic gloss and varnish.

If you decide to paint the ship miniature, prepare the wooden surface of the hull to achieve better results. Apply a layer of acrylic putty with a trowel in the areas that you appreciate that there are small holes or where you want to subsequently sand them until the area is smooth.

This action will facilitate you an easy way to paint with the color you have chosen. Very important! Use acrylic and water-soluble paints, if you must use oil-based paints, only use them in metal parts and in very small areas.

Esta acción supondrá una gran facilidad a la hora de pintar con el color que haya elegido. ¡Muy importante! Utilice pinturas acrílicas y solubles en agua. We recommend painting with an airbrush or airbrush set. Eso sí, si debe usar pinturas con base de petróleo, solo empléelas en piezas de metal y en áreas muy reducidas.

FLAGS, BANNERS AND BASE: END OF THE NAVAL MODELING KIT ASSEMBLY

The flags and banners are included in the Artesania Latina ship modeling kits, the modeler just has to take them out of the box and paste them into the ship model she / he is building.

It is only necessary to prepare the nominative metal plate of the ship model – if the kit brings it – and put the scale model on its base. A jewel of naval modeling that will brighten the sight of all those who see it at home or at work. With this post about the finishing touch for ship model made of wood and about the details for your naval scale model, we have finished the guide called How to Assembly a Wooden Ship Model. For any questions, you can consult our modelers here.

Cover the Model Ship Hull: Assembly of a Wooden Boat Model (IV)

We have to cover the model ship hull during the assembly of a wooden naval model, but before we have to sand the frames. Specifically, its more square edges, in order to make them blunt so that, later, they fit better with the cover as they are a little curved. To do this, you can use our sanding block and sandpaper.

In this image, how to sand the ship frames of a naval modeling kit.

Later, proceed to cover the deck with wood veneer with glue. We recommend our dense cyanoacrylate and spray accelerator or the white glue. You can also make it with nails, a magnetic nailer and a modeler’s hammer. It all depends on the age and make of the naval scale model you have purchased, or the method you like best.

In this image, how to cover the ship deck of a naval modeling kit.

It is time to start covering the boat hull with, in this case, the first layer of wooden strips, as can be seen in the image below. Artesanía Latina electric plank bender tool will help you shape the strips. Wet the strips for at least half an hour and apply the heat of the aforementioned tool to shape them. You can also use the manual plank bender tool.

In this image, how to cover model ship hull from a naval modeling kit.

Then, make the holes where the cannons will come out, that is, the cannon ports, as we said, once you have built the first layer of the hull cover. We recommend the use of a template so that the distance between the loop-holes is the same and to facilitate this thorough work. We also recommend tools like drill, cutter and file.

COVER MODEL SHIP HULL: SANDING AND VARNISHING

When the hull cover is finished, sand the entire hull gently and varnish it. Depending on the ship model being worked, some will require that your hull be painted with some color and some brush.

You already have the ship model ready for the rigging installation. This process will be seen in the next post dedicated to any wooden model ship building process. In this sense, Artesania Latina‘s ship modeling kits are the best in value for money.

Buy Modeling Tools: How to Build a Ship Model Made of Wood (Part II)

Buy modeling tools because it is essential for the construction of any ship model. The modeler should know that it is better to spend a little more money on quality tools than buying the cheapest ones on the market. If you choose this last alternative, you could suffer many unwanted setbacks. They are the best friends of the modeler, do not skimp on money in these ones. Good tools for naval modeling will improve the modeler skills, save time and effort, and keep the modeler positive attitude to any kind of challenge.

Buy modeling tools. Specific Modeling Tool Sets.

Like Artesania Latina modeling toolkits, these could be classified into three types: basic, intermediate and expert.

BUY MODELING TOOLS FOR BEGINNERS

The basic tools are essential to build any type of model, without these ones it would be like building a house without cement, concrete or bricks. We list them here: pliers with different shapes; carpenter’s hammer with small ball; set of saws; chisel; cutters and blades; files; drills and drill bits; electric plank bender or the hand one; rasp; needle threader; tweezers; rules, bevels and compass; awl; clamps and sergeants; sanding block and sandpapers; brushes; metal brush; scissors; vise; glue (cyanoacrylate) or white glue; nailer; pins and nails.

MODELING TOOLS FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Buy modeling tools for intermediate level will enable you to work better, especially in more difficult scale ship models, but you must make a greater investment, so if you want to try models of that skill before spending a large amount of money on these tools it would be a good idea: electric drill – better with speed modulator-; electric soldering iron; miter box for cutting; rotary table; waterline marker; universal bench screw; magnifying glasses with LED light and without it; hull support; cutting template for the cover and template for the rigging – not necessary on Artesania Latina models-; and brackets for precision drilling.

Buy modeling tools. Intermediate Level Tools.

BUY MODELING TOOLS FOR EXPERTS

Speaking about the modeling tools for experts – if the model is built from 0 without any modeling kit -, these ones require greater skills by the modeler: electric bench sander with disc and belt; electric bench grinder; lathe; mini vacuum cleaner; electric marquetry saw; and electric disc saws.

Buy modeling tools. Modeling Tools for Experts.

There are also specific micro tools or mini tools for modeling created by Artesania Latina that any modeler must have in the workshop. They are the Micro Tools: micro shapers, micro saws, micro rules and micro simulation template in wood, to which we will add two more, it will be a surprise!

Buy modeling tools. Specific Micro Tools for Modeling.

TOOLS ORGANIZATION AND MODELER’S WORKSHOP

It is time to organize all the modeling tools and create a workspace, so we will now talk about the modeler’s workshop. This should be as large as possible to be able to build any size of ship model and to house all the necessary tools.

It is convenient that the modeler workshop also has drawers for storing, for example, small tools such as drill bits and blades, and tiny parts of the scale model that is intended to be built so that they do not get lost. You can place the drawers on the table at the ends or behind.

Or if you do not have these, we offer you another Artesania Latina’s wonderful product: the Compact Modeler Workbench and the Paints Organizer.

Compact Workshop (27648) and Modeler's Paintings and Tools Organizer (27648P).

Remember, when you assemble your modeling workshop, arrange the plugs in front of you so that when you use the power tools, the cables reach your work area. Once the day is over, you can unplug them or disconnect them if you use a power strip with switch. Also, on the front, hang in front of where your model is assembling the scale model planes, so you can continually consult any questions about its assembly.

PROTECTION AND GOOD LIGHTNING FOR BUILDING MODELS

It is also important that you protect your work table if you do not want to be full of grooves and holes in the future, therefore, use cutting mats such as these ones: sizes A2, A3 and A4, depending on your needs.

Cutting Mats A2, A3 and A4 to protect the work table.

As for the lighting that the room and the table where the modeler works should have, we recommend that you put two white light LED bulbs of 12 watts on the ceiling, and as a direct table light a white light LED bulb, but in this case 2/5 watts. For this last lighting, we strongly recommend our reading lamp with magnifying glass, 60 white LED lights and three magnifications.

Reading Lamp with 60 LED & Magnifying Glass 3x.

Optimum ventilation is essential when you are working at your workshop, keep in mind that you will continually use products with chemicals such as cyanoacrylates – glues -, white glues, varnishes, paints and solvents. If you are very far from a window, it would be convenient to put a fan, odors and fumes exhaust like those that are usually placed in the bathrooms near your mounting area.

Another need for the modeler’s workshop, if you do not live alone, is the installation of a small sink for rinsing, because it is not good idea to clean the products in a place like the kitchen or bathroom if you live with more people.

Finally, a hung plank, facing the vision of the modeler, to place the tools you usually use would facilitate your work and save efforts. Live the ship modeling with us!

Building a Ship Model Made of Wood (Part I): Choice of the Modeling Kit

The writing of this post is motivated to help new modelers. Building a ship model made of wood is what you will know, so we are going to introduce you on ship modeling. Of course, you can also clarify some concepts to modelers already initiated or provide other ideas that were still unknown. These two actions will be developed thanks to the fifty years of life and experience of the most important company in the world in naval modeling. Artesania Latina, present since 1970.Artesania Latina. More than 50 years building models.

A built scale ship model represents the effort and perseverance of a modeler to achieve the final result. It will take you many hours, you will encounter conflicting emotions, being positive when successes or negatives when some part of the assembly presents greater difficulties.

Ship Modeling. Wooden ship model of the Galleon San Francisco II 1/90 (22452N).

In this sense, the best modeling tool that you can use is not made of metal or plastic or wood. It will be the dedication that the modeler gives to the modeler, the passion and perseverance you put. Here we will show you how to build step-by-step a ship miniature. What tools to choose, how to organize and adapt a workshop, what ship modeling kit to choose. Everything so that in the end you spend more hours showing the final product created, this is, the ship model you have built, than assembling it.

Ship Modeling. Wooden ship model of the Galleon San Francisco II 1/90 (22452N).

Building a ship model made of wood should be shared with the family, involving their partners in the project, whether women or men. It also can be used for encouraging children to help in any aspect of this wonderful hobby. The modeler can thus keep alive the art of assembling ship models for another generation.

Children are also learning how to assemble a wooden model ship with junior kits.

CHOICE OF THE RIGHT WOODEN SHIP MODEL

The first thing that a future modeler must face – or one already with knowledge in naval modeling – is the choice of the ship model that you will built. How to choose the ideal kit and modeling tools for each of us? It is essential that you like a lot the ship scale model you choose, the decision must be based on your mood and the pleasure that you think it will report once the model is finished.

How to build a wooden model ship. Choose your modeling kit and tools wisely.

Of course, you should also ask yourself these questions. How much money do you want to spend? What experience do you have in naval modeling? Which workshop do you have or do you want to create? What types of ship attract you? How much time can you spend on your modeling workshop to assemble the miniature?

The modeler looks for a challenge, but not a huge frustration, so it is recommended that the beginner thinks about the simplest for your first assembly. We do not recommend very complicated scale models for those who intend to start on this hobby. Finally they will not finish building them, as can be the one in the image below, for advanced modelers.

BUILDING A SHIP MODEL MADE OF WOOD: QUALITY OF COMPONENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS

What should you look for, then, in a naval modeling kit? Logically, you may not even be a scholar in the matter, but you don´t need it to choose a good one. Just check the quality of its contents once you have the box in your hands and that all the kit parts from the parts list are there.

If any part is missing, such as the Artesania Latina kits have a two-year warranty. Our warehouse will be immediately replenished once the purchase ticket has been submitted without any extra cost or shipping. Our parts are high quality, made of birch or lime wood, of stainless steel photo-etched and of die-cast.

Ship Modeling. Wooden ship model of Viking 1/75 (19001N).

The next thing to pay attention to when you are purchasing a naval modeling kit is to check how the plans and instructions are. The plans include all the drawings you need to assemble the naval model and the numerical correspondence so you can read the texts. On this aspect, the degree of precision and quality of these ones will mark the joy or impotence of the novice modeler.

Instructions for the Belem wooden model ship 1/75 (22519).

The instructions explain the plans drawing, they are the textual clarifications or icons and keys of those drawings. They are numbered in relation to those plans. You can also find model ships that have an illustrated and clarifier step-by-step. On Artesania Latina web you can free download the plans and the instructions on each product file are the attached files, in case you want to check how they are.

BUILDING A SHIP MODEL MADE OF WOOD: WHAT KIND OF HULL TO CHOOSE

Speaking of the different hull types of the ship models, you will find three different. Firstly, the one piece solids – they don´t need to be built, the beginner does not acquire experience in the assembly of the hull-. Secondly, those that have a structure of frames to assemble and we must put the wooden strips on that structure from a pre-cut laser board – most of those manufactured by Artesania Latina, the one that provides the most knowledge and the most real-. Finally, those that, on the structure, are placed large parts to build the hull.
