HMS Endeavour Ship Model: 2021 Renewed Naval Modeling Kit for Modelers Intermediate Level

It was one of Artesania Latina scale models preferred by our modeling friends for decades. Now it will be again! Our team of 3D designers and modelers had the task of renovating the 1/65 scale HMS Endeavour ship model. They knew the importance of this faithful British naval replica. For all this, we are proud to present your new 2021 modeling kit, totally improved and adapted to the demands of these times.

Naval Model Building. New 1/65 HMS Endeavour Ship Model (22520).

The iconic British exploration and research vessel – formerly a coal boat – with which Captain James Cook discovered Australia can now be built again. The HMS Endeavour naval modeling kit, an 18th century boat, aimed at modelers with an advanced skill level, can be assembled like the real ship at your own workshop. This is due to the fact that the actual construction system of the ship using false keel and frames is the one that has been adopted for the model itself.

The 1/65 scale wooden ship model of the HMS Endeavour has been completely redesigned. Our team has reliably relied on all the existing information about the ship. Target? Make the miniature as similar as possible to the ship that sailed the South Seas. Below we highlight all the improvements made, one by one.

HMS ENDEAVOUR SHIP MODEL: HIGH QUALITY LASER CUT WOOD PARTS WITH EASY LACE

The first thing any modeler looks at as soon as he opens a naval modeling kit is the quality of the wooden parts. The structure that holds the scale model firm is essential along with the parts that cover it.

Naval Model Building. New 1/65 HMS Endeavour Ship Model (22520).

Well, the parts of the HMS Endeavour ship model are made of high-quality birch and linden wood, as well as the seven oak veneers – to complete the hull – and, also, linden. All of them have been cut on a micron way and comply with that high standard that we propose in our product catalog. This is so because we use a very high precision laser so that, later, all the parts fit together perfectly. Almost effortless. It is as if they attract each other like a magnet.

Another great improvement is that the kit now includes “paper templates that, once positioned, greatly facilitate the marking and cutting of how many holes, slots and perimeter contours, among other actions, must be carried out,” says Artesania Latina team. They also adds that “it is not an easy task when it has to be done using other more rudimentary methods -such as those used on numerous occasions by other companies in the sector- that cause irreparable disruptions in the face of the final scale model finish”.

FINER AND MORE NUMEROUS PHOTO-ETCHED PARTS FOR THE NEW 1/65 HMS ENDEAVOUR  SHIP MODEL

This new HMS Endeavour ship model has much more realistic finishes compared to the old one, now discontinued. Meticulousness would be the noun with which they have been thought and reflected in its photo-etched and die-cast details.

Its photo-etched plate contains parts that replace some of the previous model, now they are much finer and more elegant. But also other totally new ones, “thus helping the modeler during the assembly”, comment our modelers. Both types give spectacular finishes to this jewel of naval modeling.

Naval modeling. Window photo-etched on New 1/65 HMS Endeavour Wooden Ship Model (22520).

Among others, the improvements made in photo-etched parts focus on the windows, base, horizontal capstan, chains, gratings and lifeboats.

Naval modeling. The windows allow light to shine on the New 1/65 HMS Endeavour Wooden Ship Model (22520).

The transom windows and the rear side windows -both before made of die cast opaque-, the skylight -before nonexistent- and the fishing lights now have a more elaborate design. They are very easy to assemble and allow the interior light to pass through different compartments and its transparent acetate.

PRE INSTALLATION FOR SPECTACULAR LED LIGHTING IN WINDOWS

On the new ship model of the British vessel HMS Endeavour we have developed a system for the pre-installation of LED lighting. “Small supports have been added in different rooms of the ship such as the aft cabins, under the skylight and inside the fishing lights”, the 3D designer specifies.

The modeler friend who wishes can attach LED lights in order to make the scale model of the ship comes to life.

If you want to illuminate your 1/65 scale ship model of HMS Endeavour, Artesania Latina offers you the possibility of acquiring the Set of LED Lightning for Scale Models and DIY Projects, not included in your naval modeling kit. This set has fixed lights and candle effect, battery holder and on / off switch to turn it on and off.

Also, don’t forget one last improvement in this regard! The base is prepared so that the modeler can choose between putting the photo-etched part with the nbota name on it or not putting it on if he prefers that the light passes through the name cut into one of the wooden stringers.

The base of the new 1/65 Ship Model HMS Endeavour (22520) allows the output of LED light.

BETTER CAPSTANS, CHAINS, GRATINGS AND LIFEBOATS

As we mentioned in the previous section, Artesania Latina team has improved many other photo-etched parts on the HMS Endeavour ship model. This is the case, first, of the horizontal capstan, now much more stylized and easier to work with than with the previous model.

The fusion between photo-etched, wood and die-cast, together with the contrast of colors of the parts that compose it -red and black- with the veneer used on the floor, make this a truly beautiful set compared to what makes the competition.

Chains for the dead eyes are now made of photo-etched and it is presented on various sizes, thus resulting less arduous assembly for the modeler. The contrast of black colors –chains- and gold –links- “enhances the ship when a visual sweep is made along the entire side of the ship,” underlines our 3D Design team.

The gratings have been transformed into rooms, with photo-etched details both on the walls – trim plates – and on the ceiling -hinges-. Speaking of LED lighting, the battery holder is perfectly concealed under what was previously a grating. In this way, the modeler can access to the on / off switch whenever he wants, as well as change the batteries when they are exhausted.

The latest photo-etched improvements are the lifeboats. The modeler only has to choose and apply the appropriate paints on these to achieve an immense quality of finish.

Naval Modeling for Beginners: Initiation Wooden Ship Models (II)

We continue with the article we left last week about naval modeling for beginners. In other words, we continue to show the large number of wooden ship models for beginners in the Artesania Latina catalog. In this way, the future modeler will know which models he wants to build.

NAVAL MODELING FOR BEGINNERS: FISHING SHIP MODEL LA PROVENÇALE (19017-N)

What do we offer as a eighth proposal of a ship model for the new model makers that start on this hobby? The 1/20 scale model of the French Côte d’Azur fishing ship called the La Provençale. Once the model is finished, it is 12’’ (305 mm) length, 13.18” (335 mm) height and 3.93’’ (100 mm) width. The modeling kit of the French ship La Provençale contains a set of high-precision laser-cut board parts, a set of wooden strips and round dowels, and accessories in wood, brass and die-cast. It also has cotton sails cut and sewn by hand, cotton thread and an exhibition base to display the boat. Assembly it with our comprehensive step-by-step video guide on our Youtube channel, accompanied by full-scale drawings of the finished model and the parts list, both of which are printed. Initiation to Naval Modeling: Wooden Ship Models for Beginners

Many times, beginners on ship modeling go to Artesania Latina to guide them when it comes the moment to build their first wooden ship models. We are going to show on these two posts the initiation to naval modeling with the products that a new ship modeler can create from our catalog.

WOODEN SHIP MODEL: SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO CAPTAIN’S BOAT (18010)

We start with the wooden model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat for its construction. This boat belonged to the line ship of the 74-cannon line, and we present its 1/25 scale miniature. From the 17th century, it would be part of the well-known Battle of Trafalgar, which Spaniards lost against English navy with Churruca in command, so it was towed and exposed in Gibraltar. Anyone who boarded the ship and entered the captain’s cabin should discover the head as a sign of absolute respect, showing the great relevance of the aforementioned ship.

This fabulous wooden ship model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat is built very similar to the real boat thanks to its design using a false keel and frames. This ship modeling kit contains precisely cut board parts by means of a laser, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. It also has instructions for its assembly on DVD format. Once built, San Juan Nepomuceno Captain’s boat model measures 15.94” x 7.48” x 14.37” (405 x 190 x 365 mm).

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN SHIP MODEL VIKING (19001-N)

We continue with the renewed wooden ship model at 1/75 scale of the Viking ship. This scale model was the pioneer made by Artesania Latina’s and it was aimed to beginners modelers two decades ago. But now we have redesigned it with the latest 3D techniques! Viking is a scale model with history. Not only is it designed for newbies, but also for those expert ship modelers who want to enjoy building a really beautiful and emblematic ship model.

The Viking ship modeling kit includes all the parts of its hull cut by laser on top-quality linden board, wooden and metal decorations (like the two dragon heads), pre-stitched sail ready to be placed, and a stand and a plate. Its assembly is precise and pleasant. The new Viking includes a DVD for computer or laptop -PC or Mac- with clarifying step-by-step instructions and with tutorial videos where we show various modeling techniques and tricks that cannot be taught in a printed version. Once finished, the model is 11.53’’ (293 mm) length, 10.82’’ (275 mm) height and 14.2’’ (360 mm) width.

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: HMS BOUNTY JOLLY BOAT (19004-N)

Our third proposition for beginners modelers is the Jolly boat wooden model of the great British ship of the 18th century HMS Bounty. Precisely, William Bligh fled with 18 loyal sailors after the riot of his crew on this small boat. In 1787 the HMS Bounty frigate left for the Caribbean in order to transport breadfruit, but the fatal climatic conditions forced them to land in Haiti, where many of the English sailors mixed with the island natives.

Its building system by means of false keel and frames, like the great majority of the scale models of Artesania Latina’s ships, brings its design closer to that of the real ship. The ship modeling kit of the HMS Bounty Jolly boat contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and cotton sails. As a bonus, it contains an wooden exhibition base to be assembled. Its construction is easy thanks to our complete step-by-step instructions on DVD format, accompanied by printed full-scale drawings of the completed model and parts list. Once it is built, HMS Bounty Jolly Boat model measures 16.33” x 13.38” x 14.29” (415 x 340 x 363 mm).

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL BON RETOUR (19007)

The fourth option for assembly aimed at novice modelers is the wooden model of the French fishing boat –it was fishing scallops- called Bon Retour, at 1/25 scale, which was used until 1980. Built in 1952 at the shipyards Tertu du Fret, in 1982 Guy Le Cornec undertook its restoration. Currently, the TUD AR MOR association manages the ship with the objective of preserving marine culture.

The ship modeling kit of Bon Retour, the French fishing boat, has an easy assembly thanks to its false keel and frames, which brings the construction of its model closer to that of the real ship. It has high precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and fabric, as well as a complete step-by-step guide in four languages and in full color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. Everything on DVD format. Once built, Bon Retour fishing ship model measures 15.55” x 4.05” x 14.60” (395 x 103 x 371 mm).

WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL SAINT MALO (19010-N)

The sixth proposal is Saint Malo: it is a type of boat called Doris, and specifically this is French. The 1/20 scale wooden model of this fishing ship, from Canadian origin and from the end of the 19th century, is dedicated to catching cod in Newfoundland banks. It was used to fish long ago in Massachusetts and New Scotland, being introduced in France, Spain and Portugal later. Because of their solvency and solidity, of being cheap and their ease of stowage, the Doris continued to be used as workboats on sailboats and many other motor boats.

It is another fantastic wooden ship model for new modelers to start on this beautiful hobby. Like everyone else, its simple construction system and its simple sail make it easy to assemble, it is beautiful the Saint Malo model ship kit. The modeling kit of this French fishing vessel contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and cotton sails. As a bonus, it brings a wooden exhibition base to be built. If you want to assemble the model, watch the video tutorials made by our modelers on our YouTube channel. It does not contain printed instructions. The kit comes with a printed plan of the finished model and a list of parts. Once built, Saint Malo fishing ship model measures 13.58” x 3.54” x 8.66” (345 x 90 x 220 mm).

WOODEN SHIP MODEL FOR BEGINNERS: SANTISIMA TRINIDAD CAPTAIN’S BOAT (19014)

The sixth alternative for those fans who intend to start in the ship modeling hobby is the 1/50 scale wooden ship model of Santisima Trinidad captain’s boat for its construction. Once finished, the scale model is 14.96’’ (380 mm) length, 3.35’’ (85 mm) width and 9.25’’ (235 mm) height.

The Santisima Trinidad or Holy Trinity (officially Our Lady of the Holy Trinity) was a Spanish ship. It was the largest during the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. It had 120 guns at the beginning, which were later expanded to 140. The Santisima Trinidad was one of the few ships of line of four bridges that existed. Symbol of the power of Spain on the seas, this ship had a tragic end. Firstly, It was defeated on the Battle of Trafalgar. Secondly, it sank when it was towed to Gibraltar by the English.

The modeling kit of Santisima Trinidad captain’s boat is also very easy to build, its assembly is close to the real ship one. It has high precision laser cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and sails ready to be placed, as well as complete step-by-step instructions on DVD format.

HMS ENDEAVOUR NEW CAPTAIN’S BOAT MODEL (19005)

The seventh option for beginners friends of ship modeling is the 1/50 scale wooden model of the HMS Endeavour captain’s boat, renewed in 2022. The English ship HMS Endeavour, launched in the second half of the 18th century, was in charge of discovering new territories such as Australia and Tahiti. In addition to numerous islands, plant and animal species, and how to calculate with great accuracy the position in length by the maths.

The modeling kit of the HMS Endeavour captain’s boat features high-precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods such as birch, hand-stitched sails and cotton threads. It also brings a base stand for boat exposure once is finished, brass, cast and woven parts. You can build it thanks to our complete step-by-step guide in full color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. Both on DVD format. Once built, HMS Endeavour captain’s boat model measures 16.53” x 3.54” x 10.62” (420 x 90 x 270 mm).

Finishing Touch for Ship Model: Assembly Details (VI)

Once the hull and the rigging are built, it is the turn to give the finishing touch for the ship model made of wood, build and / or place the lifeboat or shallop – if the ship modeling kit brings it -, to paint and to put the anchors and flags -and the rest of the details that the box contains-.

The lifeboats that come assembled only need to be carved and filed the possible burrs, and be painted and put on the lifeboat, however, there are some kits that force the construction of the miniature, which will provide, for sure, more entertainment and a new challenge for the ship modeler.

When you have to build the lifeboat, make sure the frames are properly centered on the keel before gluing them. Cover the outer edges of the frames with masking tape. Place a strip inside the frames as a temporary crossbar to help keep them in place. Adjust the strips as you would like on any boat and use double hull cover, making sure that the second layer covers the mistakes you may have made in the first phase. Once the second cover is finished, remove the frames and sand inside of the lifeboat’s hull.

The anchors have undergone numerous modifications over the centuries. In the Artesania Latina modeling kits, the anchors are already manufactured, in the absence of sanding and painting.

At the beginning of time, the anchors were placed on the outside of the ship’s hull, tied with the chain to it. Later, the anchors were stored inside the hull.

FINISHING TOUCH FOR SHIP MODEL MADE OF WOOD: VARNISHES AND AIRBRUSHING

Now we need to know how to achieve the perfect finishing touch for any ship model made of wood, for any naval modeling kit. Depending on the period and style of the ship model you are building, the modeler can either leave the model to scale with its natural wooden color or paint it. Also, you can take an intermediate action: leave the natural color above the waterline and paint the hull under it. Of course, avoid glossy finishes on the vintage boat models when varnishing.

Therefore, use matte acrylic varnishes. Apply a first layer, let it dry and sand gently with very fine sandpaper. Then, give another layer of varnish and sand again. As an alternative, you can use varnishes on an acrylic base already applied to obtain a darker shade and greater protection. Of course, in the most modern scale ship models you can use medium acrylic gloss and varnish.

If you decide to paint the ship miniature, prepare the wooden surface of the hull to achieve better results. Apply a layer of acrylic putty with a trowel in the areas that you appreciate that there are small holes or where you want to subsequently sand them until the area is smooth.

This action will facilitate you an easy way to paint with the color you have chosen. Very important! Use acrylic and water-soluble paints, if you must use oil-based paints, only use them in metal parts and in very small areas.

Esta acción supondrá una gran facilidad a la hora de pintar con el color que haya elegido. ¡Muy importante! Utilice pinturas acrílicas y solubles en agua. We recommend painting with an airbrush or airbrush set. Eso sí, si debe usar pinturas con base de petróleo, solo empléelas en piezas de metal y en áreas muy reducidas.

FLAGS, BANNERS AND BASE: END OF THE NAVAL MODELING KIT ASSEMBLY

The flags and banners are included in the Artesania Latina ship modeling kits, the modeler just has to take them out of the box and paste them into the ship model she / he is building.

It is only necessary to prepare the nominative metal plate of the ship model – if the kit brings it – and put the scale model on its base. A jewel of naval modeling that will brighten the sight of all those who see it at home or at work. With this post about the finishing touch for ship model made of wood and about the details for your naval scale model, we have finished the guide called How to Assembly a Wooden Ship Model. Ship Model Rigging: Assembly of a Wooden Boat Model (V)

The assembly of a wooden ship model rigging, we mean, the sails and the strings that knock the ship into shape. If a modeler assembles the rigging of any type of ship, she/he can surely do it on whatever a sailboat, a vessel, a caravel, a galleon or an online ship with any kind of rigging.

From this moment, we explain what are the steps, in order, that any fan of naval modeling should take when she/he is building the aforementioned rigging of the scale model. The first step, fundamental for the grip of the rigging rope, is the installation of the pink-racks, the fairleads and the chain-wales.

Once these three elements have been placed, the modeler must proceed to pierce the pink-racks in order to implant the belaying pins in them. Of course, we recommend to paint them in the desired color before inserting them.

Next, place the dead eyes in the chain-wales for the wooden ship model rigging. These will hold the shroud, which is the tensioning cable that passes through the top so that the mast is straight, and the lanyard, which will keep the shroud in balance with tension.

HOW TO ASSEMBLY THE MASTS

The next step is the masts assembly. You should proceed to assemble all the wooden ship model masts – don´t forget the bowsprit – and put their respective tops.

Assembly of a wooden ship model rigging: masts.

Later, start preparing the yards, the booms and the gaff rig mast.

Assembly of a wooden ship model rigging: yards, booms and gaff rig mast.

Once they are all built, place the masts on the boat. Artesania Latina facilitates the work thanks to the holes through which to introduce the masts so that there is no doubt.

Assembly of a wooden ship model rigging: positioning of the masts.

From now, we must begin to tie, balance and tighten the different masts. To do this, we start with the foremast and the main mast, tied with the stays from under the top to the bowsprit (almost horizontal spur that comes out of the bow), and with the mizzen mast, also with stays are up to the base of the main mast. Then, two stays come from the upper crosstree of the foremast and main mast, the first to the bowsprit and the second to the foremast.

CONSTRUCTION OF SHIP MODEL RIGGING: SHROUDS

The next assembly action of any naval modeling kit is the placement of the shrouds, for which, first, you must also build the dead eyes with their lanyards and their chain-plates, these ones are hooked to the hull. As a tip, we can recommend that they should be installed one by one, alternating them on each side of the ship model. If the modeler does not do it this way, the mast could lose its perfect vertical position.

Once this action is done, the modeler must assemble the strings of the so-called ratlines, the horizontal strings perpendicular to the shrouds. We recommend the use of two clamps, one on the left side and one on the right side of the shrouds group, in order to be able to accurately put the aforementioned ratlines.

It is the moment when the shrouds are installed, in this case the upper ones, and their corresponding ratlines.

Next, the jib-boom should be placed (if the wooden ship model had it) with its two strings so that it is completely fixed. Of course, all the rigging screws of the boat and the bowsprit standing rigging, as it has been done with the jib-boom.

HOW TO BUILD THE RUNNING RIGGING ON A SHIP MODEL

At this point on the assembly process, the modeler would have finished all the so-called standing rigging, and now she/he would have to put all the running rigging with all its yards and sails. Then, the mizzen mast latin sail would be the first to be placed.

Assembly of a wooden ship model rigging: latin sail.

It is the turn of the spritsail, which is located on the bowsprit.

Assembly of a wooden ship model rigging: spritsail.

To give way, just later, to the stay sail and the fore top sail.

Assembly of a wooden ship model rigging: stay sail and fore top sail.

Of course, it’s time for the main sail and the main top sail.

Assembly of a wooden ship model rigging: main sail and main top sail.

The last step to finish the ship model rigging and, specifically, the running rigging is the installation of the bowlines on the bow, that is, the ends or moorings of the mentioned area. They were used in square sailboats to withstand the leeches of the bow sails when sailing towards windward.

Ship Hull Construction: Assembly of a Wooden Boat Model (III)

Once the modeler who starts in the world of ship modeling has prepared the workshop and has supplied the necessary tools for modeling according to the skill level, the ship model lover can begin to know everything about the ship hull construction of the boat model thanks to this post.

On this way, the steps that will be undertaken to carry out this purpose are divided as follows. Firstly, we emphasize that it is necessary to check the contents of the modeling kit, so that the modeler becomes familiar with the shapes of the different parts. Also, as most of these kits, in this case ship modeling, have a list of parts, we recommend that you make sure that all parts are present. It is also convenient to see if it brings all the plans and instructions for its construction. (Artesania Latina modeling kits bring them on DVD format).

Naval modeling. Wooden Ship Model Captain Boat Santisima Trinidad (19014).

SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: KEEL AND FRAMES OF THE SHIP MODEL

The next action would be the assembly of the keel. It is the fundamental area of the ship’s model structure. It goes from the bow to the stern of the ship longitudinally on the exact center of the model, since everything will be built from this part.

Ship Hull Construction. Assembly of the Wooden Naval Model Keel.

Remember to take the drawings that show the hull assembly and hang them in front of you, at your workshop. On this way, you can quickly and clearly see how to assemble each part.

Ship Hull Construction. Plan for the Assembly of the Wooden Ship Model San Juan Nepomuceno (22860).

The next step would be to adjust the frames to the keel, although the modeler must first make sure that they are not broken. The good thing about Artesania Latina modeling kits is that you don’t have to file the frames before they are placed. They are ready to fit. Just do not paste them until you see that, once placed, all are perfectly.

Ship Hull Construction. Adjustment of the Frames on the Assembly of the Wooden Ship Model.

ASSEMBLY OF SHIP MODEL DECK AND MASTS

Afterwards, the modeler must check and fit the decks of the wooden ship model. This action has a great relevance since the decks will make the keel straight, and it help align the frames.

Small scale models, usually aimed at beginner modelers, only have one deck, thus facilitating the work of the novice. Never force the cover on the frames when assembling it, be very careful, or it will yield and damage the hull construction.

Fitting the Decks on the Assembly of the Wooden Ship Model.

As for the installation of the masts, Artesania Latina’s ship miniatures facilitate the assembly to the modelers, because they will only have to insert the masts through holes arranged for it on the deck and the keel. Speaking about other brands, you have to put some wooden blocks to hold the mâsts. But we will comment this later, although we show you below where they would be inserted.

Assembly of the Masts on a Wooden Ship Model.

SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: BOW AND STERN OF THE NAVAL MODEL

It is time to assemble and fit the bow and stern parts – the stern reinforcement is not necessary on Artesania Latina’s boat models because it comes to ‘die’ at the end of the last frame-, which will provide a solid base to the wooden strips that will finally cover the hull. The parts provided must be symmetrical and follow the shape of the mentioned hull of the wooden ship model.

Placement of Bow and Stern Parts on the Wooden Ship Model Assembly.

Once you have seen the good disposition of the frames and that the decks are not bent or sunk, proceed to glue them, as well as the rest of the ship built, with cyanoacrylate for porous materials because you are working with wood. Once you have pasted everything, let it dry for at least twenty four hours. We will speak about more steps for ship hull construction on next post.

Buy Modeling Tools: How to Build a Ship Model Made of Wood (Part II)

Buy modeling tools because it is essential for the construction of any ship model. The modeler should know that it is better to spend a little more money on quality tools than buying the cheapest ones on the market. If you choose this last alternative, you could suffer many unwanted setbacks. They are the best friends of the modeler, do not skimp on money in these ones. Good tools for naval modeling will improve the modeler skills, save time and effort, and keep the modeler positive attitude to any kind of challenge.

Buy modeling tools. Specific Modeling Tool Sets.

Like Artesania Latina modeling toolkits, these could be classified into three types: basic, intermediate and expert.

BUY MODELING TOOLS FOR BEGINNERS

The basic tools are essential to build any type of model, without these ones it would be like building a house without cement, concrete or bricks. We list them here: pliers with different shapes; carpenter’s hammer with small ball; set of saws; chisel; cutters and blades; files; drills and drill bits; electric plank bender or the hand one; rasp; needle threader; tweezers; rules, bevels and compass; awl; clamps and sergeants; sanding block and sandpapers; brushes; metal brush; scissors; vise; glue (cyanoacrylate) or white glue; nailer; pins and nails.

Buy modeling tools. Assortment of Generic Tools for Modeling.

MODELING TOOLS FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

Buy modeling tools for intermediate level will enable you to work better, especially in more difficult scale ship models, but you must make a greater investment, so if you want to try models of that skill before spending a large amount of money on these tools it would be a good idea: electric drill – better with speed modulator-; electric soldering iron; miter box for cutting; rotary table; waterline marker; universal bench screw; magnifying glasses with LED light and without it; hull support; cutting template for the cover and template for the rigging – not necessary on Artesania Latina models-; and brackets for precision drilling.

Buy modeling tools. Intermediate Level Tools.

BUY MODELING TOOLS FOR EXPERTS

Speaking about the modeling tools for experts – if the model is built from 0 without any modeling kit -, these ones require greater skills by the modeler: electric bench sander with disc and belt; electric bench grinder; lathe; mini vacuum cleaner; electric marquetry saw; and electric disc saws.

Buy modeling tools. Modeling Tools for Experts.

There are also specific micro tools or mini tools for modeling created by Artesania Latina that any modeler must have in the workshop. They are the Micro Tools: micro moulding scrapers / micro shapers, micro saws, micro rules and micro simulation template in wood, to which we will add two more, it will be a surprise!

Buy modeling tools. Specific Micro Tools for Modeling.

TOOLS ORGANIZATION AND MODELER’S WORKSHOP

It is time to organize all the modeling tools and create a workspace, so we will now talk about the modeler’s workshop. This should be as large as possible to be able to build any size of ship model and to house all the necessary tools.

It is convenient that the modeler workshop also has drawers for storing, for example, small tools such as drill bits and blades, and tiny parts of the scale model that is intended to be built so that they do not get lost. You can place the drawers on the table at the ends or behind.

Or if you do not have these, we offer you another Artesania Latina’s wonderful product: the Compact Modeler Workbench and the Paints Organizer.

Compact Workshop (27648) and Modeler's Paintings and Tools Organizer (27648P).

Remember, when you assemble your modeling workshop, arrange the plugs in front of you so that when you use the power tools, the cables reach your work area. Once the day is over, you can unplug them or disconnect them if you use a power strip with switch. Also, on the front, hang in front of where your model is assembling the scale model planes, so you can continually consult any questions about its assembly.

PROTECTION AND GOOD LIGHTNING FOR BUILDING MODELS

It is also important that you protect your work table if you do not want to be full of grooves and holes in the future, therefore, use cutting mats such as these ones: sizes A2, A3 and A4, depending on your needs.

Cutting Mats A2, A3 and A4 to protect the work table.

As for the lighting that the room and the table where the modeler works should have, we recommend that you put two white light LED bulbs of 12 watts on the ceiling, and as a direct table light a white light LED bulb, but in this case 2/5 watts. For this last lighting, we strongly recommend our reading lamp with magnifying glass, 60 white LED lights and three magnifications.

Reading Lamp with 60 LED & Magnifying Glass 3x.

Optimum ventilation is essential when you are working at your workshop, keep in mind that you will continually use products with chemicals such as cyanoacrylates – glues -, white glues, varnishes, paints and solvents. If you are very far from a window, it would be convenient to put a fan, odors and fumes exhaust like those that are usually placed in the bathrooms near your mounting area.

Another need for the modeler’s workshop, if you do not live alone, is the installation of a small sink for rinsing, because it is not good idea to clean the products in a place like the kitchen or bathroom if you live with more people.

Finally, a hung plank, facing the vision of the modeler, to place the tools you usually use would facilitate your work and save efforts. Live the ship modeling with us!

Building a Ship Model Made of Wood (Part I): Choice of the Modeling Kit

The writing of this post is motivated to help new modelers. Building a ship model made of wood is what you will know, so we are going to introduce you on ship modeling. Of course, you can also clarify some concepts to modelers already initiated or provide other ideas that were still unknown. These two actions will be developed thanks to the fifty years of life and experience of the most important company in the world in naval modeling. Artesania Latina, present since 1970.Artesania Latina. More than 50 years building models.

A built scale ship model represents the effort and perseverance of a modeler to achieve the final result. It will take you many hours, you will encounter conflicting emotions, being positive when successes or negatives when some part of the assembly presents greater difficulties.

Ship Modeling. Wooden ship model of the Galleon San Francisco II 1/90 (22452N).

In this sense, the best modeling tool that you can use is not made of metal or plastic or wood. It will be the dedication that the modeler gives to the modeler, the passion and perseverance you put. Here we will show you how to build step-by-step a ship miniature. What tools to choose, how to organize and adapt a workshop, what ship modeling kit to choose. Everything so that in the end you spend more hours showing the final product created, this is, the ship model you have built, than assembling it.

Ship Modeling. Wooden ship model of the Galleon San Francisco II 1/90 (22452N).

Building a ship model made of wood should be shared with the family, involving their partners in the project, whether women or men. It also can be used for encouraging children to help in any aspect of this wonderful hobby. The modeler can thus keep alive the art of assembling ship models for another generation.

Children are also learning how to assemble a wooden model ship with junior kits.

CHOICE OF THE RIGHT WOODEN SHIP MODEL

The first thing that a future modeler must face – or one already with knowledge in naval modeling – is the choice of the ship model that you will built. How to choose the ideal kit and modeling tools for each of us? It is essential that you like a lot the ship scale model you choose, the decision must be based on your mood and the pleasure that you think it will report once the model is finished.

How to build a wooden model ship. Choose your modeling kit and tools wisely.

Of course, you should also ask yourself these questions. How much money do you want to spend? What experience do you have in naval modeling? Which workshop do you have or do you want to create? What types of ship attract you? How much time can you spend on your modeling workshop to assemble the miniature?

The modeler looks for a challenge, but not a huge frustration, so it is recommended that the beginner thinks about the simplest for your first assembly. We do not recommend very complicated scale models for those who intend to start on this hobby. Finally they will not finish building them, as can be the one in the image below, for advanced modelers.

CATALOG OF WOODEN SHIP MODELS FOR BEGINNERS

Therefore, we recommend simple, small and attractive ship models for beginners: a boat with a single deck, one or two masts and a rigging as simple as possible. Examples can be our model ships such as the Viking (19001-N), Swift (22110-N), Providence (19018), Elcano lifeboat (19019), Provençale (19017), the lifeboat of the Titanic (19016), the boat of the captain of the HMS Bounty (19004), the french doris Saint Malo (19010), the scallop fishing boat Bon Retour (19007) or captain’s boat of Santisima Trinidad (19014), among many other miniatures.

BUILDING A SHIP MODEL MADE OF WOOD: QUALITY OF COMPONENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS

What should you look for, then, in a naval modeling kit? Logically, you may not even be a scholar in the matter, but you don´t need it to choose a good one. Just check the quality of its contents once you have the box in your hands and that all the kit parts from the parts list are there.

If any part is missing, such as the Artesania Latina kits have a two-year warranty. Our warehouse will be immediately replenished once the purchase ticket has been submitted without any extra cost or shipping. Our parts are high quality, made of birch or lime wood, of stainless steel photo-etched and of die-cast.

Ship Modeling. Wooden ship model of Viking 1/75 (19001N).

The next thing to pay attention to when you are purchasing a naval modeling kit is to check how the plans and instructions are. The plans include all the drawings you need to assemble the naval model and the numerical correspondence so you can read the texts. On this aspect, the degree of precision and quality of these ones will mark the joy or impotence of the novice modeler.

Instructions for the Belem wooden model ship 1/75 (22519).

The instructions explain the plans drawing, they are the textual clarifications or icons and keys of those drawings. They are numbered in relation to those plans. You can also find model ships that have an illustrated and clarifier step-by-step. On Artesania Latina web you can free download the plans and the instructions on each product file are the attached files, in case you want to check how they are.

BUILDING A SHIP MODEL MADE OF WOOD: WHAT KIND OF HULL TO CHOOSE

Speaking of the different hull types of the ship models, you will find three different. Firstly, the one piece solids – they don´t need to be built, the beginner does not acquire experience in the assembly of the hull-. Secondly, those that have a structure of frames to assemble and we must put the wooden strips on that structure from a pre-cut laser board – most of those manufactured by Artesania Latina, the one that provides the most knowledge and the most real-. Finally, those that, on the structure, are placed large parts to build the hull.
