Juan Sebastian Elcano Model: the Spanish Training Ship Sails the Seas for Beginners thanks to its 1/250 New Modeling Kit

We have redesigned and manufactured it again to delight lovers of naval modeling, especially for those who want to start in this wonderful hobby. Why? The modeler points out that “several of the decorative elements on the deck of the Juan Sebastian Elcano model have been improved, as is the case of the stairs, the handrails, the anchors, the folded rescue boats and, apart, the exhibition base plate”.

These details are “more realistic and can be manipulated – the modeler continues – because they are manufactured in photo-etched, except lifeboats, which are now turned wood, while in the previous Juan Sebastian Elcano scale model all these were manufactured in die-cast, so the appearance was much coarser and less trustworthy”, the professional says. Elcano and Esmeralda figureheads “are wonderful“, she exclaims.

HISTORIA DEL BUQUE ESCUELA JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO

In March 5th, 1927, dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera’s daughter, Carmen Primo de Rivera, launched Juan Sebastian Elcano school ship in Cadiz. Although the first name the boat received was Minerva, which is the goddess that appears in the figurehead, by Royal Decree in 1925, was renamed with its current name, after the owner of the shipyards, Horacio Echevarria, urged to Primo de Rivera to tell the monarch Alfonso XIII that he wanted it.

As a curiosity, its first trip was from Cadiz to Malaga with the king on board the ship. Then moved to Seville, through the Guadalquivir river, where an Ibero-American Exposition was held. It also passed through the Canary Islands and then went to Guipuzcoa, where it received the combat flag. In this trial period that lasted until 1928, always in Spanish waters, Juan Sebastian Elcano traveled 5,769 nautical miles in 57 trips, at an average speed of 4.2 knots.

Just after, it undertook its first instruction cruise around the world in the opposite direction that Elcano did in the past, starting from Cadiz on August 1st 1928, where it returned on May 29th 1929. Two midshipmen have provided more packaging and history to this vessel: King Juan Carlos I, in 1958; and his son and current monarch of the Kingdom of Spain, Felipe VI, in 1987.

FEATURES OF JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO TRAINING SHIP

Juan Sebastian Elcano vessel (and its Chilean brother Esmeralda) has the following measures: 4,452’’ in length and 3,704’’ without the bowsprit; 515.7’’ of breadth; 341.7’’ of depth; and 275.6’’ of draught and 1,917’’ of air draught. In this sense, its structure is distributed in four essential areas that are the Quarter Deck, the Forecastle, the Waist and the Poop. The back main mast, whose name is Asturias, is located on the Quarter Deck, a place where all the most relevant events tend to take place.

The two 1.45” (37 mm) cannons used for the salutes are on the Forecastle zone, where the bowsprit with the figurehead and where the workings are executed, without forgetting that just below are the lower decks, toilets and lockers. On the Waist we can meet the main front mast, called Almansa, and the foremast, called Blanca. What has been arranged in this part? The bridge, the radio and meteorological stations, the kitchen, the dining rooms, the operating room, the sick bay and the defeat rooms.

Speaking of its propulsion, Elcano has a total of 20 sails, covering a gigantic area of 3,151 square meters, however, it also has a diesel engine to be able to navigate with a power of 2,070 cv approximately, reaching speeds of up to 16.5 knots.

About its armament, Juan Sebastian Elcano school ship possesses 2 cannons of 37 millimeters, 2 Browning machine guns of 12.7 mm and 2 MG-1 machine guns of 7.62 mm. Its crew is composed of 197 people, of which 24 are officers; 22, non-commissioned officers; 146, sailors; and 5 civilians. In addition, it has capacity for up to 78 midshipmen.

JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO MODEL: IDEAL FOR NOVICE MODELERS

HMS Endeavour Ship Model: 2021 Renewed Naval Modeling Kit for Modelers Intermediate Level

It was one of Artesania Latina scale models preferred by our modeling friends for decades. Now it will be again! Our team of 3D designers and modelers had the task of renovating the 1/65 scale HMS Endeavour ship model. They knew the importance of this faithful British naval replica. For all this, we are proud to present your new 2021 modeling kit, totally improved and adapted to the demands of these times.

The iconic British exploration and research vessel – formerly a coal boat – with which Captain James Cook discovered Australia can now be built again. The HMS Endeavour naval modeling kit, an 18th century boat, aimed at modelers with an advanced skill level, can be assembled like the real ship at your own workshop. This is due to the fact that the actual construction system of the ship using false keel and frames is the one that has been adopted for the model itself.

The 1/65 scale wooden ship model of the HMS Endeavour has been completely redesigned. Our team has reliably relied on all the existing information about the ship. Target? Make the miniature as similar as possible to the ship that sailed the South Seas. Below we highlight all the improvements made, one by one.

HMS ENDEAVOUR SHIP MODEL: HIGH QUALITY LASER CUT WOOD PARTS WITH EASY LACE

The first thing any modeler looks at as soon as he opens a naval modeling kit is the quality of the wooden parts. The structure that holds the scale model firm is essential along with the parts that cover it.

Well, the parts of the HMS Endeavour ship model are made of high-quality birch and linden wood, as well as the seven oak veneers – to complete the hull – and, also, linden. All of them have been cut on a micron way and comply with that high standard that we propose in our product catalog. This is so because we use a very high precision laser so that, later, all the parts fit together perfectly. Almost effortless. It is as if they attract each other like a magnet.

Another great improvement is that the kit now includes “paper templates that, once positioned, greatly facilitate the marking and cutting of how many holes, slots and perimeter contours, among other actions, must be carried out,” says Artesania Latina team. They also adds that “it is not an easy task when it has to be done using other more rudimentary methods -such as those used on numerous occasions by other companies in the sector- that cause irreparable disruptions in the face of the final scale model finish”.

FINER AND MORE NUMEROUS PHOTO-ETCHED PARTS FOR THE NEW 1/65 HMS ENDEAVOUR SHIP MODEL

This new HMS Endeavour ship model has much more realistic finishes compared to the old one, now discontinued. Meticulousness would be the noun with which they have been thought and reflected in its photo-etched and die-cast details.

Its photo-etched plate contains parts that replace some of the previous model, now they are much finer and more elegant. But also other totally new ones, “thus helping the modeler during the assembly”, comment our modelers. Both types give spectacular finishes to this jewel of naval modeling.

Among others, the improvements made in photo-etched parts focus on the windows, base, horizontal capstan, chains, gratings and lifeboats.

The transom windows and the rear side windows -both before made of die cast opaque-, the skylight -before nonexistent- and the fishing lights now have a more elaborate design. They are very easy to assemble and allow the interior light to pass through different compartments and its transparent acetate.

PRE INSTALLATION FOR SPECTACULAR LED LIGHTING IN WINDOWS

On the new ship model of the British vessel HMS Endeavour we have developed a system for the pre-installation of LED lighting. “Small supports have been added in different rooms of the ship such as the aft cabins, under the skylight and inside the fishing lights”, the 3D designer specifies.

The modeler friend who wishes can attach LED lights in order to make the scale model of the ship comes to life.

If you want to illuminate your 1/65 scale ship model of HMS Endeavour, Artesania Latina offers you the possibility of acquiring the Set of LED Lightning for Scale Models and DIY Projects, not included in your naval modeling kit. BETTER CAPSTANS, CHAINS, GRATINGS AND LIFEBOATS

As we mentioned in the previous section, Artesania Latina team has improved many other photo-etched parts on the HMS Endeavour ship model. This is the case, first, of the horizontal capstan, now much more stylized and easier to work with than with the previous model.

The fusion between photo-etched, wood and die-cast, together with the contrast of colors of the parts that compose it -red and black- with the veneer used on the floor, make this a truly beautiful set compared to what makes the competition.

Chains for the dead eyes are now made of photo-etched and it is presented on various sizes, thus resulting less arduous assembly for the modeler. The contrast of black colors –chains- and gold –links- “enhances the ship when a visual sweep is made along the entire side of the ship,” underlines our 3D Design team.

The gratings have been transformed into rooms, with photo-etched details both on the walls – trim plates – and on the ceiling -hinges-. Speaking of LED lighting, the battery holder is perfectly concealed under what was previously a grating. In this way, the modeler can access to the on / off switch whenever he wants, as well as change the batteries when they are exhausted.

The latest photo-etched improvements are the lifeboats. The modeler only has to choose and apply the appropriate paints on these to achieve an immense quality of finish.

ENHANCED STEP-BY-STEP DIGITAL INSTRUCTIONS TO EASILY BUILD THE HMS ENDEAVOUR SHIP MODEL

This new scale model of the British ship HMS Endeavour has extensive and precise step-by-step instructions, they are very elaborate and have full color photos. Artesania Latina makes it even easier for the modeler with the inclusion of video tutorials. All on DVD format for the computer.

Any part that needs to be cut, and if it is even smaller, has now the right tool: our Micro Saws.

The best thing about this set of saws is that it does not come with one or two, but six micro saws for wood and plastic. It also has a scriber and twoapplicators for cyanoacrylate (glue).

The scriber is used, above all, in plastic models, to make decorative lines or stripes: airplanes, boats, cars, etc. On the other hand, with the two cyanoacrylate applicators, you can paste any scale model parts or any manual work with extreme precision.

MICRO RULERS (27325): SMALL MODEL BUILDING TOOLS

The Micro Drawing Set or Micro Rulers Set is designed expressly for modelers and manufactured in stainless steel. It has rules, triangles and parallel ruler, all of these very useful to build models when taking accurate measurements in small dimensions.

The two malleable rulers (one of 1.96’’/50 mm and one of 3.93’’/100 mm), with metric and imperial systems, that brings the pack are perfect to even measure model curved parts. Ship Hull Construction: Assembly of a Wooden Boat Model (III)

Once the modeler who starts in the world of ship modeling has prepared the workshop and has supplied the necessary tools for modeling according to the skill level, the ship model lover can begin to know everything about the ship hull construction of the boat model thanks to this post.

On this way, the steps that will be undertaken to carry out this purpose are divided as follows. Firstly, we emphasize that it is necessary to check the contents of the modeling kit, so that the modeler becomes familiar with the shapes of the different parts. Also, as most of these kits, in this case ship modeling, have a list of parts, we recommend that you make sure that all parts are present. SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: KEEL AND FRAMES OF THE SHIP MODEL

The next action would be the assembly of the keel. It is the fundamental area of the ship’s model structure. It goes from the bow to the stern of the ship longitudinally on the exact center of the model, since everything will be built from this part.

Remember to take the drawings that show the hull assembly and hang them in front of you, at your workshop. On this way, you can quickly and clearly see how to assemble each part.

The next step would be to adjust the frames to the keel, although the modeler must first make sure that they are not broken. The good thing about Artesania Latina modeling kits is that you don’t have to file the frames before they are placed. They are ready to fit. Just do not paste them until you see that, once placed, all are perfectly.

ASSEMBLY OF SHIP MODEL DECK AND MASTS

Afterwards, the modeler must check and fit the decks of the wooden ship model. This action has a great relevance since the decks will make the keel straight, and it help align the frames.

Small scale models, usually aimed at beginner modelers, only have one deck, thus facilitating the work of the novice. Never force the cover on the frames when assembling it, be very careful, or it will yield and damage the hull construction.

As for the installation of the masts, Artesania Latina’s ship miniatures facilitate the assembly to the modelers, because they will only have to insert the masts through holes arranged for it on the deck and the keel. Speaking about other brands, you have to put some wooden blocks to hold the mâsts. But we will comment this later, although we show you below where they would be inserted.

SHIP HULL CONSTRUCTION: BOW AND STERN OF THE NAVAL MODEL

It is time to assemble and fit the bow and stern parts – the stern reinforcement is not necessary on Artesania Latina’s boat models because it comes to ‘die’ at the end of the last frame-, which will provide a solid base to the wooden strips that will finally cover the hull. The parts provided must be symmetrical and follow the shape of the mentioned hull of the wooden ship model.

Once you have seen the good disposition of the frames and that the decks are not bent or sunk, proceed to glue them, as well as the rest of the ship built, with cyanoacrylate for porous materials because you are working with wood. Once you have pasted everything, let it dry for at least twenty four hours. We will speak about more steps for ship hull construction on next post.

Swedish Ship Model Vasa 1/65 (I): The Most Powerful Warship in 17th Century

After an arduous work of ship modeling for a year and a half, Artesania Latina is pleased to present you its brand new and magnificent Swedish wooden ship model. The Vasa warship model at 1/65 scale, aimed at the most expert modelers who want new challenges. A marvel in terms of detail and difficulty!

Scandinavian warship model Vasa is a great test to check modelers skills. Our partners have spent eight hours a day for twelve months for its assembly. The modeling kit requires patience and meticulousness in detail.

It is a perfect replica of the original ship, which is now in the museum called Vasa in Stockholm (Sweden). Among the most notable features of the Vasa, of this great Swedish sailboat, was its enormous power. It had to move 1,200 tons of weight and a sail area of 1,150 square meters and 80 tons.
