Santa Maria Model Assembly (I): Build the Caravel in Wood with Our Help

Our ‘Model Building Tips’ section of the blog helps our modeling friends know how to build many of our scale models and to manipulate the tools. In this case, we are going to show an audiovisual guide for the Santa Maria model assembly at 1/65 scale (22411-N). The wooden caravel with which Christopher Columbus discovered America. Surely, it is one of the best-selling faithful miniature replicas in the world every year.

So the Artesania Latina‘s modelers team has created a series of video tutorials at our YouTube Playlists. Not only the assembly of the Santa Maria model, but also many others ships and airplanes. We are going to explain to you from now how to work with the most complicated parts to execute during the construction process of the famous caravel -it really is a nao-.

SANTA MARIA MODEL ASSEMBLY: SIDE WALLS AND BOW PARTS

In this Chapter 1 of the fifteen included in this assembly guide of the Santa Maria model (22411-N) we are going to deal with the ‘Placement of the Side Walls’. For this step, the modeler needs quick drying dense cyanoacrylate (27650). The cyano applicator is included in this set (27302). Once applied, you must press the wooden part until it is fully adhered. Start with the central part to later glue the back and the front.

We go to the bow from Chapter 2 with the ‘Forecastle Bulkhead Planking’ of this guide for Santa Maria model assembly at 1/65 scale. The modeler must once again use cyanoacrylate, in addition to any universal cutter (27044) from our catalog of cutting tools for modeling. In this way, you will be able to cut the leftover wooden parts once they are glued.

We continue on the bow assembly of Santa Maria caravel scale model with Chapter 3 and the ‘Bow Deck Outline’. Prior to placing the three parts, modelers must first paint or varnish them with our brushes and airbrushes. After painting them, you must cut the corners diagonally with the cutter so that they fit perfectly when gluing them with cyanoacrylate.

Chapter 4 deals with ‘Bow Deck Assembly’. Before putting the part that you have made in the previous step, place without glue the two wooden cylinders that serve for its proper positioning. Apply cyanoacrylate to the entire frame or edge of the bow deck and insert the piece. Press it without excessive force until you notice that it has adhered. Carefully remove the two cylinders.

SANTA MARIA CARAVEL CONSTRUCTION GUIDE: RUDDER AND DEADEYES

The Santa Maria model assembly, a 1/65 scale model by Artesania Latina, now focuses on the rudder. Specifically, Chapter 5 shows the ‘Rudder Hinges Placement’. Mark with a pencil the places where you want to place the hinges. Take each of these and press it on the place you have marked previously until it takes the shape. Insert a punch through the hinge holes and make a small hole. By that same place and with the help of a professional needle nose pliers (27213) take one of the rivets or nails and insert it by pressing with the pliers. Once inserted, you can fix it better with gentle strokes using our modeler’s hammer (27017).

Continue by cutting three parts of wooden round dowels with a cutter. Use the glue applicator to put cyanoacrylate around these. Finally, insert them into the holes of the hinges with the help of some professional precision tweezers with ultra fine tip (27204).

It is time to watch the ‘Deadeyes Assembly in Chainwales’ in Chapter 6. Take a bolt with its metal part and apply cyanoacrylate on the metal. Place it and mark with a small drill where you want to place the nail. Then insert the nail with the pliers and press. Repeat the process with all the deadeyes.

SANTA MARIA MODEL ASSEMBLY: HANDRAILS AND BARRELS

The Chapter 7 teaches modelers how to set up the ‘Handrails’. Take one of these and mark with a pencil the leftovers that you want to cut so that the ends are diagonal for placement. Proceed to cut with the cutter. Sand these ends with the sanding block (27014) so there are no burrs. Apply cyan to the bases of the upright posts and glue the railing to the foredeck. Varnish it last.

The last video of Santa Maria model assembly that we watch in this post -we continue in the next one- is the one from Chapter 8: ‘Barrels Making’. Using a utility knife, split the barrel support part in two and remove any excess. Apply cyanoacrylate to the curved area of the bracket where the barrel sits. Peg the barrel into the bracket along one of the horizontal lines on the first. Do the same with the other barrel. Do the same process with the other piece of the bracket as well. With the help of precision pliers, take the thread and insert it through all the holes as a grip and decoration.

Electric Plank Bender: Learn How to Use an Essential Tool for Naval Modeling

In the previous post, we discovered what are the news for 2021 of the collection of small model building tools called Micro Tools, made by Artesania Latina. In this article, we will show which are the products of this type of small tools that have enchanted our modelers friends in recent years.

MICRO SHAPERS A & B (27300 y 27301): SMALL MODEL BUILDING TOOLS

These are the most the best-selling Micro Tools for modeling and crafts, on its two versions, no doubt: the Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers A (27300), the Micro Moulding Scrapers B (27301) and the Micro Moulding Scrapers C.

Artesania Latina’s Micro Moulding Scrapers or Micro Shapers are the ideal tools to mold any type of model: a boat, a dollhouse or, for example, a building. How do all Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers work? Exactly, these small model building tools have to be used passing them over the wooden or plastic strip several times until they can achieve the desired effect. Of course, previously it is recommended to use a sandpaper on the material that is going to work to suppress burrs, roughness or small irregularities. MICRO SAWS (27302) FOR PRECISION CUTS IN WOOD, PLASTIC AND RESIN

Also made of stainless steel and presented in high quality photo-etched, the Micro Saws is a kit that also belongs to the small model building tools collection Micro Tools. It is essential for any modeler or crafts fan who needs to make precision cuts, for example, in wood, plastic and resin. Any part that needs to be cut, and if it is even smaller, has now the right tool: our Micro Saws.

The best thing about this set of saws is that it does not come with one or two, but six micro saws for wood and plastic. It also has a scriber and twoapplicators for cyanoacrylate (glue).

The scriber is used, above all, in plastic models, to make decorative lines or stripes: airplanes, boats, cars, etc. On the other hand, with the two cyanoacrylate applicators, you can paste any scale model parts or any manual work with extreme precision.

MICRO RULERS (27325): SMALL MODEL BUILDING TOOLS

The Micro Drawing Set or Micro Rulers Set is designed expressly for modelers and manufactured in stainless steel. It has rules, triangles and parallel ruler, all of these very useful to build models when taking accurate measurements in small dimensions.

The two malleable rulers (one of 1.96’’/50 mm and one of 3.93’’/100 mm), with metric and imperial systems, that brings the pack are perfect to even measure model curved parts. The modeler can fold them when needed and then put them back on its natural position. They can not only serve for the model maker, but also for any crafts fan.

In addition, the Micro Drawing Set also comes with two squares, both with chamfered corners to avoid glue. They are very useful when used as mounting brackets. And, finally, a parallel ruler.

MICRO TEMPLATE FOR WOODEN SIMULATION (27322): THE NECESSARY CLASSIC TOUCH

The last of the tools for modeling and crafts belonging to Artesania Latina’s Micro Tools Collection, but no less important, is the Micro Template for Wooden Simulation.

With this tool, with a good varnish and with the help of an airbrush, the modelers and crafts artisans can provide a wooden color to their scale models, doll houses or any object, thus acquiring a total resemblance to the commented material.

Micro Tools for Modeling: The Expected New Product Catalog 2021-2022

Artesania Latina decided three years ago to create a specific collection of small tools: the Micro Tools for Modeling are aimed at the model building in general, and the assembly of ship models in particular, naval modeling. There were five different types of micro tools for modeling, all made of stainless steel, which were part of Artesania Latina’s catalog: the Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers A (27300) and Micro Moulding Scrapers B (27301), the Micro Saws (27302), the Micro Drawing Set (27325) and the Wooden Simulation Template (27322).

However, after the enormous success among our modelers friends of this type of small size and enormous functionality tool for its precision, Artesania Latina has designed and manufactured five new Micro Tools for Modeling, in order to facilitate to the amateur and professional of this beautiful hobby the daily tasks with the miniature: Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303), Micro Rigging Tools (27321), Micro Moulding Scrapers C (27304), Micro Easy Ratlines Template 6.5 mm (27311) and Micro Centering Ruler (27326).

MICRO TOOLS FOR MODELING: MITRE BOX FOR PRECISION CUTS (27303)

We show you the first brand new micro tool: the Micro Mitre Box 45º and 90º (27303). This tiny but resistant and effective tools, useful both for modeling and for all types of crafts, allows the modelers to cut 45 and 90 degrees in two materials: plastic and wood.

With total precision, you can obtain the necessary splits so that the parts fit perfectly, such as small strips for a ship model. For this, the Micro Mitre Box reflects two different units of measurement: millimeters and inches.

This very useful mini tool, presented in photo-etched and also made of stainless steel, so its longevity and reliability are assured, is divided into 4 essential elements: the mitre or miter, the fine saw -for plastics-, the coarse saw -magnificent to work the wood- and the MDF base, ideal to protect the area where the cuts are made with this modeling tool. For optimal use of these Micro Tools for Modeling, it is recommended to incorporate the handle of the Universal Cutter # 5.

MICRO OUTILS FOR MODELING: SHIP MODEL RIGGING TOOLS (27321)

It is a Micro Tool specifically for ship modeling, since it only serves to build the riggings of the model ships. We are talking about the Micro Rigging Tools (27321).

The Micro Rigging Tools are made of stainless steel and it comes in photo-etched format, ensuring its functionality and its nonexistent deterioration by rust or the passage of time.

They are used to place each one of the sails and the cotton threads of any naval scale model, any ship model. Specifically, the blister of the Micro Rigging Tools bring the following items: 5 hooks and pushers in order to easily handle the numerous threads and / or to remove any object of the model ship that makes impossible the access to the ship modeler.

These hooks and pushers, in order to be handled or wielded, need another metal attached to the photo-etched: a steel crosspiece to be assembled with each tool. However, we recommend an added handle like the one belonging to the Universal Cutter # 5.

MICRO MOULDING SCRAPERS / MICRO SHAPERS C: SHAPE BOAT MODELS STRIPS (27304)

Another novelty for 2021 in terms of Micro Tools for Modeling are the Micro Moulding Scrapers / Micro Shapers C (27304). They are used to mold wooden and plastic strips of any ship, dollhouse or building model, among other scale models. After the success achieved with the other two types of Micro Shapers, A and B, Artesania Latina team has created this third variant. Thus we expand the number of ways with which the aforementioned materials can be worked.

The Micro Moulding Scrapers C are also essential for naval modeling. This set includes 3 high quality metal plates with about 15 or 16 different shapes for each of these. In this way, the modeler can achieve around 45 varied reliefs thanks to these specific micro tools for modeling. The existing measurements in these Micro Shapers C are the following: 1.5×5 mm, 2×5 mm, 1.5×4 mm, 2×4 mm, 3×4 mm and 5×4 mm.

Also included special trapezoidal shapes for 1×3 mm and 1.5×4 mm strips. Micro Moulding Scrapers C also facilitate working with sticks and rods of different diameters to reinforce them. They are fantastic modeling tools for model ships rigging.

Decorate your wooden and plastic models by shaping the materials you work with. Get beautiful and many elementary motifs with these new Micro Shapers C. To do this, sand the material through which the plate is going to pass in the chosen shape. Then take the Micro Moulding Scrapers C and pass it over the wooden or plastic strip being treated. Just repeat that process several times until you achieve the desired shape and … It’s done!

MICRO TEMPLATES FOR EASY RATLINES

The last of the 2021 novelties of Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina are the Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 5 mm (27310), Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 6.5 mm (27311) and Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines 8 mm (27312). The set includes three wooden templates with various widths according to the different shrouds. When building any model ship rigging, in addition to making the assembly process easier for you, the micro jigs will save you large amounts of thread when you are focused on the ratlines.

The Micro Templates for Easy Ratlines are placed behind the shrouds. With the side ‘combs’ a zig-zag thread is passed in front of them. Put everything and add a dot of glue on each joint of the shrouds and on the thread that you have put in front. Next, cut off the excess threads. Much better to make the scales so knot by knot at each joint.

NEW FOR 2022! MICRO TOOLS FOR MODELING: MICRO CENTERING RULER (27326)

We already present a new for 2022 of the Micro Tools for Modeling made by Artesania Latina: Micro Centering Ruler (27326). It allows building models and other crafts with greater ease and precision as it indicates the center of the parts. Made of high quality stainless steel, the Micro Centering Ruler brings a metric and imperial measurement systems, with 3.93” (10cm) for each side. The 0 is on the center of the ruler, which includes a protractor and small holes to mark the measurements with a mechanical pencil or pencil. Indispensable so that everything is square!

StageCoach 1848 Model: Luxury Modeling in Wood and Metal

They are designed for the most demanding advanced and expert modelers, but also for beginners who want large-scale projects. Why? Because they are made with a very high level of detail, using parts of the highest quality on the market, such as the model of the StageCoach 1848.

Heritage Collection models are not just models, they are museum pieces or modeling jewels that, once built, radiate history, beauty and majesty. They are the legacy that the modeler has taken as his own to enjoy at home through their assembly and subsequent exhibition. CONTENTS OF 1/10 STAGECOACH 1848 MODEL

The 1/10 scale StageCoach 1848 modeling kit contains the highest quality parts of wood, brass, cast iron, leather for the seats and photo-etched. In addition, it brings a set with everything you need to provide real lighting to the Far West model.

For its construction, you have our detailed step-by-step instructions in DVD format. You can also use the parts list to check that they are all available. Not forgetting the necessary High Tech Cut sheet, with the enumeration of the parts totally cut with laser precision.

The scale model has moving parts, which add more realism to this faithful miniature replica made of wood and metal. Wheels and doors move, open and close.

To extract the parts made of wood that come in sheets, cut the small nerves that join both with a utility knife. Once removed, sand them down before mounting them on the model under construction.

Once this fabulous model of the StageCoach 1848 is finished, the 1/10 scale model measures 400mm long, 260mm high and 125mm wide.

KNOW THE HISTORY OF NORTH AMERICAN STAGECOACH

Advanced and expert modelers of a certain age watched American Wild West movies when they were young or old. That is why they were already crazy about this marvel that is the wooden and metal model of the StageCoach 1848 model at 1/10 scale.

These vehicles had circulated from 1716 from Boston to Rhode Island, although the design for which our scale model was taken began in 1820 with the addition of an oval box, two doors, an outer driver’s seat and reinforced triple leaf springs.

Ten years later, Concord Coaches company employee JS Abbot and Troy Coaches company made nearly identical modifications simultaneously.

Stagecoaches were about the only way to travel across the United States from the east coast to the west. They were the predecessors of the railroad. They transported both people and mail and the notification of new laws. Specifically, those belonging to the Wells Fargo company also carried money, gold and silver. Since the beginning of the 20th century, exactly since 1910, they are unfortunately no longer manufactured.

Initiation to Naval Modeling: Wooden Ship Models for Beginners

Many times, beginners on ship modeling go to Artesania Latina to guide them when it comes the moment to build their first wooden ship models. We are going to show on these two posts the initiation to naval modeling with the products that a new ship modeler can create from our catalog.

WOODEN SHIP MODEL: SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO CAPTAIN’S BOAT (18010)

We start with the wooden model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat for its construction. This boat belonged to the line ship of the 74-cannon line, and we present its 1/25 scale miniature. From the 17th century, it would be part of the well-known Battle of Trafalgar, which Spaniards lost against English navy with Churruca in command, so it was towed and exposed in Gibraltar. Anyone who boarded the ship and entered the captain’s cabin should discover the head as a sign of absolute respect, showing the great relevance of the aforementioned ship.

This fabulous wooden ship model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat is built very similar to the real boat thanks to its design using a false keel and frames. This ship modeling kit contains precisely cut board parts by means of a laser, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. It also has instructions for its assembly on DVD format. Once built, San Juan Nepomuceno Captain’s boat model measures 15.94” x 7.48” x 14.37” (405 x 190 x 365 mm).

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN SHIP MODEL VIKING (19001-N)

We continue with the renewed wooden ship model at 1/75 scale of the Viking ship. This scale model was the pioneer made by Artesania Latina’s and it was aimed to beginners modelers two decades ago. But now we have redesigned it with the latest 3D techniques! Viking is a scale model with history. Not only is it designed for newbies, but also for those expert ship modelers who want to enjoy building a really beautiful and emblematic ship model.

The Viking ship modeling kit includes all the parts of its hull cut by laser on top-quality linden board, wooden and metal decorations (like the two dragon heads), pre-stitched sail ready to be placed, and a stand and a plate. Its assembly is precise and pleasant. The new Viking includes a DVD for computer or laptop -PC or Mac- with clarifying step-by-step instructions and with tutorial videos where we show various modeling techniques and tricks that cannot be taught in a printed version. Our third proposition for beginners modelers is the Jolly boat wooden model of the great British ship of the 18th century HMS Bounty. Precisely, William Bligh fled with 18 loyal sailors after the riot of his crew on this small boat. In 1787 the HMS Bounty frigate left for the Caribbean in order to transport breadfruit, but the fatal climatic conditions forced them to land in Haiti, where many of the English sailors mixed with the island natives.

Its building system by means of false keel and frames, like the great majority of the scale models of Artesania Latina’s ships, brings its design closer to that of the real ship. The ship modeling kit of the HMS Bounty Jolly boat contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and cotton sails. INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL BON RETOUR (19007)

The fourth option for assembly aimed at novice modelers is the wooden model of the French fishing boat –it was fishing scallops- called Bon Retour, at 1/25 scale, which was used until 1980. Built in 1952 at the shipyards Tertu du Fret, in 1982 Guy Le Cornec undertook its restoration. Currently, the TUD AR MOR association manages the ship with the objective of preserving marine culture.

The ship modeling kit of Bon Retour, the French fishing boat, has an easy assembly thanks to its false keel and frames, which brings the construction of its model closer to that of the real ship. It has high precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and fabric, as well as a complete step-by-step guide in four languages and in full color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL SAINT MALO (19010-N)

The sixth proposal is Saint Malo: it is a type of boat called Doris, and specifically this is French. The 1/20 scale wooden model of this fishing ship, from Canadian origin and from the end of the 19th century, is dedicated to catching cod in Newfoundland banks. It was used to fish long ago in Massachusetts and New Scotland, being introduced in France, Spain and Portugal later. Because of their solvency and solidity, of being cheap and their ease of stowage, the Doris continued to be used as workboats on sailboats and many other motor boats.

It is another fantastic wooden ship model for new modelers to start on this beautiful hobby. Like everyone else, its simple construction system and its simple sail make it easy to assemble, it is beautiful the Saint Malo model ship kit. WOODEN SHIP MODEL FOR BEGINNERS: SANTISIMA TRINIDAD CAPTAIN’S BOAT (19014)

The sixth alternative for those fans who intend to start in the ship modeling hobby is the 1/50 scale wooden ship model of Santisima Trinidad captain’s boat for its construction. Once finished, the scale model is 14.96’’ (380 mm) length, 3.35’’ (85 mm) width and 9.25’’ (235 mm) height.

The Santisima Trinidad or Holy Trinity (officially Our Lady of the Holy Trinity) was a Spanish ship. It was the largest during the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. It had 120 guns at the beginning, which were later expanded to 140. The Santisima Trinidad was one of the few ships of line of four bridges that existed. Symbol of the power of Spain on the seas, this ship had a tragic end. Firstly, It was defeated on the Battle of Trafalgar. Secondly, it sank when it was towed to Gibraltar by the English.
