Initiation to Naval Modeling: Wooden Ship Models for Beginners

Many times, beginners on ship modeling go to Artesania Latina to guide them when it comes the moment to build their first wooden ship models. We are going to show on these two posts the initiation to naval modeling with the products that a new ship modeler can create from our catalog.

WOODEN SHIP MODEL: SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO CAPTAIN’S BOAT (18010)

We start with the wooden model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat for its construction. This boat belonged to the line ship of the 74-cannon line, and we present its 1/25 scale miniature. From the 17th century, it would be part of the well-known Battle of Trafalgar, which Spaniards lost against English navy with Churruca in command, so it was towed and exposed in Gibraltar. Anyone who boarded the ship and entered the captain’s cabin should discover the head as a sign of absolute respect, showing the great relevance of the aforementioned ship.

This fabulous wooden ship model of San Juan Nepomuceno captain’s boat is built very similar to the real boat thanks to its design using a false keel and frames. This ship modeling kit contains precisely cut board parts by means of a laser, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and fabric. It also has instructions for its assembly on PDF format. INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN SHIP MODEL VIKING (19001-N)

We continue with the renewed wooden ship model at 1/75 scale of the Viking ship. This scale model was the pioneer made by Artesania Latina’s and it was aimed to beginners modelers two decades ago. But now we have redesigned it with the latest 3D techniques! Viking is a scale model with history. Not only is it designed for newbies, but also for those expert ship modelers who want to enjoy building a really beautiful and emblematic ship model.

The Viking ship modeling kit includes all the parts of its hull cut by laser on top-quality linden board, wooden and metal decorations (like the two dragon heads), pre-stitched sail ready to be placed, and a stand and a plate. Its assembly is precise and pleasant. The new Viking includes clarifying multimedia step-by-step instructions on PDF format. No printed instructions are included. Once finished, the model is 11.53’’ (293 mm) length, 10.82’’ (275 mm) height and 14.2’’ (360 mm) width.

INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: HMS BOUNTY JOLLY BOAT (19004-N)

Our third proposition for beginners modelers is the Jolly boat wooden model of the great British ship of the 18th century HMS Bounty. Precisely, William Bligh fled with 18 loyal sailors after the riot of his crew on this small boat. In 1787 the HMS Bounty frigate left for the Caribbean in order to transport breadfruit, but the fatal climatic conditions forced them to land in Haiti, where many of the English sailors mixed with the island natives.

Its building system by means of false keel and frames, like the great majority of the scale models of Artesania Latina’s ships, brings its design closer to that of the real ship. The ship modeling kit of the HMS Bounty Jolly boat contains high-precision laser-cut board parts, hardwoods, brass, cast iron and cotton sails. INITIATION TO NAVAL MODELING: WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL BON RETOUR (19007)

The fourth option for assembly aimed at novice modelers is the wooden model of the French fishing boat –it was fishing scallops- called Bon Retour, at 1/25 scale, which was used until 1980. Built in 1952 at the shipyards Tertu du Fret, in 1982 Guy Le Cornec undertook its restoration. Currently, the TUD AR MOR association manages the ship with the objective of preserving marine culture.

The ship modeling kit of Bon Retour, the French fishing boat, has an easy assembly thanks to its false keel and frames, which brings the construction of its model closer to that of the real ship. It has high precision laser-cut board parts, noble woods, brass, cast iron and fabric, as well as a complete step-by-step guide in four languages and in full color, accompanied by the full-scale drawings of the finished model. WOODEN FISHING SHIP MODEL SAINT MALO (19010-N)

The sixth proposal is Saint Malo: it is a type of boat called Doris, and specifically this is French. The 1/20 scale wooden model of this fishing ship, from Canadian origin and from the end of the 19th century, is dedicated to catching cod in Newfoundland banks. It was used to fish long ago in Massachusetts and New Scotland, being introduced in France, Spain and Portugal later. Because of their solvency and solidity, of being cheap and their ease of stowage, the Doris continued to be used as workboats on sailboats and many other motor boats.

It is another fantastic wooden ship model for new modelers to start on this beautiful hobby. WOODEN SHIP MODEL FOR BEGINNERS: SANTISIMA TRINIDAD CAPTAIN’S BOAT (19014)

The sixth alternative for those fans who intend to start in the ship modeling hobby is the 1/50 scale wooden ship model of Santisima Trinidad captain’s boat for its construction. Once finished, the scale model is 14.96’’ (380 mm) length, 3.35’’ (85 mm) width and 9.25’’ (235 mm) height.

The Santisima Trinidad or Holy Trinity (officially Our Lady of the Holy Trinity) was a Spanish ship. It was the largest during the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. It had 120 guns at the beginning, which were later expanded to 140. The Santisima Trinidad was one of the few ships of line of four bridges that existed. Symbol of the power of Spain on the seas, this ship had a tragic end. Firstly, It was defeated on the Battle of Trafalgar. Secondly, it sank when it was towed to Gibraltar by the English.

Belem Training Ship Model. 1:75 Faithful Wooden Replica of the French Boat

Swedish Ship Model Vasa 1/65 (I): The Most Powerful Warship in 17th Century

After an arduous work of ship modeling for a year and a half, Artesania Latina is pleased to present you its brand new and magnificent Swedish wooden ship model. The Vasa warship model at 1/65 scale, aimed at the most expert modelers who want new challenges. A marvel in terms of detail and difficulty!

Scandinavian warship model Vasa is a great test to check modelers skills. Our partners have spent eight hours a day for twelve months for its assembly. The modeling kit requires patience and meticulousness in detail.

It is a perfect replica of the original ship, which is now in the museum called Vasa in Stockholm (Sweden). Thanks to the Vasa wooden ship model 1/65 the modeler will have entertainment for a long time. You will always be helped by very clarifying step-by-step photographic instructions written in nine languages. Do you want a great challenge? This is yours.

Among the most notable features of the Vasa, of this great Swedish sailboat, was its enormous power. It had to move 1,200 tons of weight and a sail area of 1,150 square meters and 80 tons. A fact that is reflected in our scale model due to its large dimensions: 42’’ length, 34’’ height and 40’’ width.

SUCCESSFUL DECORATION FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL SHIP MODEL: VASA 1/65

What about its decoration! More than a meter of beauty with around 100 sculptures made in die-cast between its stern and, somewhat less, its prow, which provide a colorful rarely seen on ship modeling.

Also, full of meaning, the carvings are divided into five themes. They representing King Gustavo II and his lackeys, lions holding the shield, human faces with different emotions on their faces, angels, sirens and sea creatures and mythological. Moreover, when it was built, it had 700 more than today. It had heroes of the Bible, Roman emperors and Greek gods.

Vasa model ship may preside over any room in which it is placed, providing it with a touch of classical elegance.

But it is not the only thing that the ship modeling kit of the Swedish vessel brings in die-cast, the 64 cannons of port and starboard are also made of this metallic material.

Renewed Santa Maria Caravel Model: More Details, Consistency and Lightness (II)

The previous post announced one of the magnificent novelties on Artesanía Latina stock. The renewed Santa Maria Ship Model at 1/65 scale. We now continue with our modelers explanation about how the design and construction process of this fantastic naval replica has been. We also talk about the great improvements in the decoration of the same, keep reading!

In relation to this, an inconvenience that was present in the old model of this replica and that produced headaches to our model friends has been solved. “The mainmast of the ship has been made deeper to improve its grip. The deck hole where the mast was did not fit completely, a defect that was already completely corrected”, says.

Our team adds the following: “We have modified the mainmast platform by implementing its design with photo-etched. All the platforms have been divided into several parts for the enjoyment of the modeler during the assembly and to provide greater realism to the model”.

IMPROVEMENTS ON THE DECORATION OF THE CARAVEL MODEL

During the redesigning process in 3D of Santa Maria Ship Model, after the advice of the modelers, several improvements have been made regarding the decoration and details of this model.

One of the first measures adopted was the inclusion of a “lifeboat that could be built with frames and hull lining in wood. We suppressed the precedent that was made of die-cast in one part”, explains Artesania Latina team. They also add that “this way, the modeler’s experience with the ship miniature is more satisfying and fun. In addition to the fact that in the 15th century there was no type of boat made of metal”.

Another improved detail is the introduction of supports for the barrels and more realistic cannons -with their bullets-. On the new version of the famous ship they have been divided into two parts. “The gun carriage is made of wood while the cane, in metal”, concrete our professionals.

Likewise, the colors of the rubbing strikes, the handrails, the stern window doors and the shields, among other accessories, have also been changed to provide a beautiful decorative touch to the boat that sailed the Atlantic more than five centuries ago.

A SPECTACULAR RENOVATION FOR THE SANTA MARIA CARAVEL MODEL

The final result of all the undertaken work for more than a year by our designers and modelers is a faithful reproduction of the original Santa Maria Caravel Model: each element is reproduced in its original material (cannons, sails, rigging …) to achieve a classic boat, but with finishes chords to 2020, which will delight our modeling friends, the followers of the world reference brand on naval modeling: Artesania Latina.

Renewed Santa Maria Caravel Model: More Details, Consistency and Lightness (I)

Extraordinary news! Artesania Latina’s 3D designers and modelers have already developed and finished the renovation project of the Santa Maria Caravel wooden model – it is called nao really – at 1/65 scale. One of the five most important ships in world history.

Ship modeling and fans of this beautiful hobby will be happy when they build this faithful replica. Santa Maria ship scale model has required the latest techniques in design and manufacturing, in addition to having the highest quality materials.

CONTENTS OF NEW MODELING SHIP KIT SANTA MARIA CARAVEL

The modeling kit of this classic ship commanded by Christopher Columbus during the voyage through which he discovered America at the end of the 15th century. Firstly, it contains precious parts of clear birch wood, cut with precision thanks to the laser and fabulous details made of metal and photo-etched. Secondly, it also has sails with reinforced cotton fabric of higher quality, ready to be placed – this model includes cardboard templates to paint the crosses-. Finally, as a gift that was not in the previous version of the caravel, a magnificent wooden base with a nominal metal plate for its exhibition.

Once the building process is finished, the measures of Santa Maria Caravel wooden model are the following: 19.80’’ length, 10.39’’ width and 19.60 height. To achieve that point easily, the instructions have been redesigned completely digitized on PDF format. Now the ship modeler can look at a simple step-by-step with a large number of detailed photos. So the assembly of each thread, each block and each rigging is perfectly explained without cumbersome texts full of technical words, not understandable by everyone. No more old instructions for this caravel model! It also has many video tutorials to help you during the assembly!

But … What steps have been taken to improve this wonderful ship model?

ESSENTIAL IMPROVEMENTS ON THIS GREAT SHIP MODEL

Artesania Latina’s 3D designers and modelers have made numerous improvements on the Santa Maria Caravel wooden model. Precisely, the most remarkable is the ship structure reform “to give it more consistency and lightness, we had to create many new parts”, says Artesania Latina team.

One of the modelers states that “we have redesigned the false keel, the frames and the decks of the ship. It is one of the biggest novelties not having to use nails to be able to build them, they are only used in some details”.

Precisely, speaking about the decks of the Santa Maria Caravel renewed wooden model, the 3D designer emphasizes that “the system of tabs of the frames has been improved, implanting a greater number of these to implement it, because it did not cover 100% all the parts in the previous version, it was necessary to facilitate, for example, the fitting of its ends and for a perfect alignment without leaving any more loose part”.

Our modelers continue with the second part of the post about the premium scale model of the famous German Messerschmitt BF109G fighter. They add that “the structure of the fuselage has been reinforced as a grid as on the tail. Then, we give a great strength, firmness and longevity to the BF109G model“. In this way, lovers of aircraft modeling who assemble this replica will see that many parts are fully coupled. That is because it has tabs and grooves that almost make the use of glue unnecessary.

One of the fabulous features of the Messerschmitt BF109G, German fighter metal and plastic model is the inclusion of an electronic system for the propeller movement and for the LED position and existing control panel in the cabin. The 3D design project of the great Messerschmitt BF 109G model is made of metal and photoetched. It has been developed with impeccable results by our highly qualified on industrial design experts.

Firstly, they have shaped the different parts of the plane with 3D design software. Secondly, the parts have been printed using the latest technologies, adapted and modified for correct assembly.

After this exhaustive test / error labor until everything fits perfectly, one of our designers clarifies this issue. “We have not had problems designing the structure of the plane as soon as the parts have been printed everything has fit completely.
