Santa Ana Model Ship in Wood at 1:84 Scale: The Return of the Acclaimed Naval Model Building Kit for Experts, Limited Edition Trafalgar 1805!

And most importantly, an essential vessel in the Battle of Trafalgar between the Bristish Royal Navy and the Spanish Armada at the beginning of the following century. SANTA ANA MODEL SHIP: KIT CONTENTS OF SPANISH LINE SHIP

The renewed wooden naval modeling kit of the famous Spanish ship of the line Santa Ana at 1:84 scale was the prototype of a series of 8 identical vessels that would constitute the nerve of the Armada. The modeler will be able to find in this new limited edition of the kit hundreds of high quality parts such as strips, rods and sheets of solid wood and plywood of basswood cut by a precision laser. Also, a spectacular 373 x 110 mm brass photo-etched plate with the finest details such as lanterns, railings or details of the cannons.

Of course, pre-sewn sails made of cotton fabric -ready to be placed- and cotton threads of different colors and thicknesses. We cannot forget the acetates, the nets and the flags. As a bonus so that the model is perfectly displayed, like an artwork that it is, a wooden exhibition base with a metal plate.

With this Santa Ana model ship, you can represent the appearance and artillery of the boat correctly in the battle of Trafalgar. The crowned rampant lion figurehead is a new design. New artillery, corrected in scale and now much more detailed including photo-etched parts, has the howitzers that the ship carried in Trafalgar. The previous metal lifeboats have been replaced with a more realistic wooden construction.

RENEWED INSTRUCTIONS: STEP-BY-STEP MORE ENJOYABLE!

Once Santa Ana model ship (22905-N) is built, it measures 46.45” (1180 mm) length, 34.25” (870 mm) height and 18.11” (460 mm) width. Its design by means of false keel and frames brings its assembly closer to that of the real vessel. And how to assemble it? The modelers and 3D designers who work at Artesania Latina have redesigned all the old instructions. Colour arrives to the Spanish ship of the 18th century! Now, you will be able to appreciate the different assembly steps much more clearly. Languages? Spanish, French, Italian, English, German, Dutch and Russian.

The wooden ship model kit has an instructions DVD for computer (Windows and Mac). Clearing step-by-step photos, as well as demonstrative videos with some of the most important steps. Cutting Tools for Modeling and Crafts (II): Saws, Guillotines, Miter Boxes and Scissors

This week we continue with the second part of the post that talks about the functional cutting tools for modeling and crafts made by Artesania Latina. This time, we leave the world of cutters to immerse ourselves in the world of saws, guillotines, miter boxes and scissors. All these tools allow you to make deeper, more difficult and more precise cuts even than cutters, so let’s get to know them all.

We start with the very useful Cutting Saw Blade with Ergonomic Handle (27042), to which the modeler can also attach our cutter blades. But the most important thing about this cutting tool is that if you use it together with the Anodized Aluminum Miter Box (27031) you will be able to obtain precise cuts of 45º and 90º. Rods, slats and other pieces will not resist the precision of the cuts. They are essential on, for example, the construction process of ship models and other types of vehicles and objects. On the video below one of our modellers shows you how to use both tools.

The blade of the saw is fine-toothed to achieve that exactness in the cuts, which is further increased with the miter box. Use both products on materials such as wood and plastic, among others. Both the saw and the miter box are made of high quality metal. We appreciate modeling and offer the highest standards to our client friends.

CUTTING TOOLS: MICRO SAWS AND MICRO MITER BOX

If you want to work in smaller spaces, with smaller parts and in complicated positions, we recommend our Micro Saws Set (27302). In addition to six different mini saws, it comes with two cyanoacrylate applicators and a scriber. Do you want to know what these cutting tools are like and how are they used? CUTTING TOOLS: GUILLOTINE OR MULTICUTER SET

Perhaps the most useful cutting tool for modeling and crafts: the Vertical Guillotine or Multicutter Set (27004). It allows cutting many more materials such as sheet, rubber, cardboard, paper, plastic and, of course, wood. All cuts with the shape that is required. It has an adjustable cutting angle that goes from 45º to 90º. In this way, the modeler can create miter joints, moldings and cut the ends of the strips with the angles it is needed.

JAPANESE STYLE THREAD SNIPS

One of the essential cutting tools for model building, sewing and crafts. Specifically, even more essential for naval modeling. This is so because the Japanese Style Thread Snips (27060) is used to cut threads and fabrics on the rigging construction of any model ship with sails. Cutting Tools for Modeling and Crafts (I): Wide Catalog of Products for Different Applications

Artesanía Latina cares about creating all the products that the modeler needs when she/he is building her/his model ships or another type. This is the case of the cutting tools for modeling and crafts. Now, we have a wide and renewed catalog with many specific tools that will make the task easier for any of our friends.

Cutting parts of wood or threads, removing burrs or leftovers and sawing certain parts during the assembly process are three of the most common actions. Well, here you have all the necessary cutting tools for modeling. Cutters, saws, guillotines, scissors, blades… Choose the ones you need!

CUTTING TOOLS FOR MODELING: CUTTERS

One of the top cutting tools for modeling and crafts, the cutters. We have universal cutters #1 and #5. The most popular in our catalog is the Cutter #5 with Ergonomic Handle and 5 Blades (27044). Why? Because, in addition to cutting with blades, it can also be used for Micro Saw Set (27302) and for the Saw Blade (27042). This cutter also comes with a protective cap to prevent any type of cut.

Another #5 Cutter from our catalog is the Professional Scalpel Type with 6 Blades and Case (27028-1). We introduce it to you and show you how to use it on the video below.

As for the #1 cutters, those with a scalpel are the best. On the one hand, the one that comes with a blade (27019); on the other, the one that comes with two (27043). Both made of high-quality metal, of course. But, now, we want to talk about two other very specific ones: first, the Designer Cutter with Soft Handle and 6 Blades (27043-S). Another cutting tools for modeling and essential crafts, the spare blades and the dispensers. Over time, cutter blades wear out and become damaged. You have to change them! Don’t worry, you can choose between different sets, it’s your choice. For #5 cutters, you have two options. Waterline Marker for Model Ships: Indispensable Naval Modeling Tool for Boat Hulls

Our modelers friends had been asking us for a waterline marker from our house, from Artesania Latina. They know of the extensive experience of our firm in the creation of effective and efficient ship modeling tools. After our 3D computer designers and our modelers developed a very conscientious joint work, we present our Waterline Marker (27649). You can click here to acquire it quickly and make your own tool workshops more complete. Your wishes are already a reality! We always read the opinions of our customers and fellow fans very seriously!

The waterline marker is one of the most necessary modeling tools during model ship building. This very useful product allows the modeler to mark that line around the ship, also thanks to the pencil included. Includes measurements in both metric and imperial systems. In this sense, it is 23 centimeters or 9 inches tall to be able to perform tasks on different naval miniatures depending on its size. In addition, it has a mechanism that makes it easy to raise, lower and fix the pencil to paint the line where your scale model demands, it is adjustable in height.

The waterline marker is made from precision laser cut plywood parts so assembly is a breeze. We recommend the use of dense cyanoacrylate and accelerator (27650) -sold separately- to glue the different pieces, fix them so that they are much more stable. In short, it makes it easy to mark the line on the hull of the ship model with total precision. In general, it can be used as a gauge to mark lines parallel to the work surface. But… How do you use the waterline marker correctly?

HOW TO USE THE WATERLINE MARKER

First of all, to maintain the ship models stable, position the ship’s keel well on its exhibition base or on our hull support (27011) for models with false keel up to 15.748” (400mm), for sale separately. The stern and bow must be balanced at the proper heights.

On the other hand, the waterline marker helps us navigate by painting the ship from bow to stern to trace that mark. In this way, the waterline is always it remains at the same height and the finishes will be much better when it comes to varnishing or painting with colors. When the ship is positioned, use a level you have at your workshop so that the naval model is also balanced from port to starboard.

Consult the assembly instructions of the vessel. Be sure of the height at which you should paint the water line. Place marker and pencil at desired height without painting. When you’re in the right place, move the marker from bow to stern while paying attention to where the pencil goes. After making that run and you are at the stern, see if that is where you have to start and end the line. If this is not the case, tilt the naval model slightly from the bow or stern to bring it into its correct position.

Now you can plot. Place the pencil against the hull of the ship. Do not force anything and move the marker making sure that the lower base does not rise from where it rests. The fixing wedge that the height tool has will help you to keep the pencil completely in its straight position. Even so press little so that the line is perfect. And ready! Fast and easy!

Sailboat Model Bluenose II: One of the Most Famous Regatta and Fishing Schooners in History

For many of us, this faithful replica in miniature that we present to you is one of the most beautiful on ship models catalog by Artesania Latina. The sailboat model Bluenose II (22453) at 1:75 scale, one of the regatta and fishing schooners most famous in history. Of Canadian origin, the wooden modeling kit will delight modellers with at least an intermediate level of skills. Once built, this spectacular vessel measures 27.16” (690mm) length, 4.33” (110mm) width and 22.44” (570mm) height. It will dazzle at any room where you expose it!

HISTORY OF BLUENOSE SCHOONER: THE FASTEST SAILBOAT

Its name is due to the nickname given to the inhabitants of Nova Scotia (blue nose), where the schooner was launched on March 26, 1921. In this sense, it was built at the Smith & Rhuland.

The Bluenose was operating in the Grand Banks region along with dozens of other vessels. This is a peculiar area of the North Atlantic, comprised between the coast of Canada and Labrador. It is subject to periodic mists that make it an Eden for fishermen. There, hake, cod, salmon and tuna are found in prodigious quantities. That is why this schooner is also known as ‘The Queen of the Grand Banks’.

He was going to fish in Newfoundland waters but his destiny changed. It was seen that this fast schooner won all the regattas that were organized on the east coast of the United States. These fishing boats, especially because of their sails, are conditioned to reach great speed.

Thus, the Bluenose was winner of the North Atlantic International Fishermen’s Trophy in all the races held between 1920 and 1938. Captain Angus Walter, at the forefront. In 1942, despite the efforts of this captain and many others who tried to keep the ship in Nova Scotia, the Bluenose was sold to carry cargo in the West Indies. On January 28, 1946, when running aground on a coral reef off the coast of Haiti.

Lastly, the Bluenose II, built in 1964, is an exact replica of the original and the last of the tall Schooners. Now he is an ambassador, symbol and tourist attraction of the city of Lunenburg, where he continues to sail today. Want to visit? Take a look at his official page.

With this, Captain James Cook discovered Australia and made it easier to know where Tahiti, New Zealand and many other islands were located. Thanks to its existence, new animal and plant species were also discovered. Likewise, it allowed the calculation with great precision of the position in longitude by means of mathematical formulas. So the contribution of James Cook’s voyages to navigation, seamanship and geographical exploration are undoubtedly of historical importance. It is an ideal time for us to immerse ourselves, then, a little more in the history of HMB Endeavour. Precisely, a few months ago the location and existence of the wreck was confirmed, as can be read in this interesting article from Australian Geographic.

HMB Endeavour was 32 meters long, 8.9 meters wide and 3.4 meters deep. Her rigging was of the frigate type. Speaking of its armament, it had 22 guns: 10 4-pounders and 12 swivel. Regarding the sail, it had 897 square meters. This allowed it to reach speeds of 7 to 8 knots (13 to 15 km per hour).

HISTORY OF HMB ENDEAVOUR: PIONEER OF THE MODERN OCEANOGRAPHIC RESEARCH SHIP

More than two and a half centuries ago, an English coal ship originally called the Earl of Pembroke (1764) emerged as the forerunner of the oceanographic research ship of our times. The HMB Endeavour and its own history are essential, they marked an era and a change in knowledge. It all started with the efforts of British Royal Navy Captain James Cook -at the time a lieutenant-. Mount your first major expedition to the South Sea. Being able to go to Tahiti, discovered a year earlier, to install an astronomical observatory to observe the transit of Venus in 1769. The goal? Measure the size of the Solar System.

The history of HMB Endeavour as an exploration ship begins in Plymouth (England) in August 1768 with 94 people and supplies for a year and a half. Being a coal ship, even having been converted into a research vessel, it had enormous holds that were modified in order to store provisions. As they were used up, those spaces were occupied by instruments, plants and animals that they found during their journey. The organization of its crew was spectacular: sailors for naval operations, officers and infantrymen for shipboard discipline and external attacks, and scientists and artists to study and reflect on milestones.

On April 10th, 1769, HMB Endeavour reached Tahiti after passing through Madeira, Rio de Janeiro and Cape Horn. Unfortunately, exact measurements could not be obtained with the transit of Venus since the planet had a very diffuse profile. At least, yes, the astronomer Charles Green was able to appreciate and record it. The challenge was only achieved one hundred years later thanks to photography. In July, Cook opened a secret letter from the Navy Department urging him to find Australia.

HISTORY OF HMB ENDEAVOUR: THE DISCOVERY OF AUSTRALIA

For half a year, the HMB Endeavour circled New Zealand and realized that it was not a continent but islands. In 1770 Cook claimed them as British after mapping almost four thousand kilometers of coastline in three months.

It was precisely in April of that same year when it ran into the east coast of Australia, which it bordered towards the north until in June it ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef Coral. In this sense, he managed to free the ship, although with damage to the hull that was attempted to be repaired. After setting foot on land again, they continued west but this time he learned his lesson. A auxiliary boat led the expedition to measure the depth.

The history of HMB Endeavour continued heading west until October, the month in which it arrived in Jakarta, Indonesia. There he took advantage of three months to repair the ship, however, many lives of the crew were lost due to malaria. At Christmas, he headed home and on July 12, 1771, the port of Dover (England) received the HMS Endeavor with 38 fewer crew members.

After James Cook’s expedition, HMB Endeavour was used for military purposes until it was decommissioned in 1774, to be sold and renamed Lord Sandwich in 1775. Its last service was fighting in the US War of Independence. It was sunk in Narragansett Bay to prevent the French landing at Newport in the Battle of Rhode Island. Currently, as we mentioned, the location of the wreck has been certified and there is a faithful replica of the original.

One of the most attractive and beautiful wooden ship models from Artesania Latina… Now renewed! Our 3D designers and our modellers have rethought the aesthetics and assembly of the American schooner model Virginia (22115) at 1:41 scale. It is a beautiful naval miniature suitable for beginners modellers, although it will also delight the rest of the modellers, regardless of their level. Once it is built, the American schooner model Virginia measures 21.25” (540mm) length, 4.72” (120mm) width and 19.68” (500mm) height.

The Virginia is a type of vessel known as a ‘schooner’ launched in 1819, as we mentioned earlier. It was very fashionable, along with other small rigged boats, in the United States for its great speed, maneuverability and elegance. Precisely, these schooners were the germ of the US Coast Guard. Its objective? To comply with the new import and customs laws thanks, in addition, to its central rotating carronade and light weapons. The electric plank bender 220 volt (27074-1) is a tool for naval modeling and other crafts aimed at modellers in the European market. MAGNETIC NAILER FOR MODEL BUILDING

The magnetic nailer (27023) by Artesania Latina is one of the essential naval modeling tools for models that need nails to build. It facilitates fast and easy nailing in wood during the assembly of the hull of model ships, but also when fixing the deck elements. It is important to note that, in order for the tips to stick to the nailer, they must be made of iron or contain iron.

How to use? Apply moderate pressure to the nailer, so you can drive the nail straight and accurately. After entering the wood, we recommend finishing off the tip with the modeller’s hammer (27017) or by tapping the handle of the nailer if the modeling enthusiast has advanced knowledge and skills.

HULL SUPPORT FOR SHIP MODELS

More specific, it’s impossible! The hull support for model ships (27011) is another of the naval modeling tools you need to be able to work comfortably on them. It is highly recommended for holding naval models with a false keel of up to approximately 400 mm. On this aspect, the hull support is valid for the miniature replicas of the 19000 series, 20100 and some of the 20400 of Latin Crafts.

Thanks the hull support you can hold the hull of the boat you are building and kepp immobile, leaving both hands free. It’s great, for example, for keeping the hull level and static when tracing the waterline. It has a pivot point to tilt the helmet to the ideal working position. The hull fastening and the pivot point of the bracket are fixed by means of thumbscrews. Including two metal mini clamps to fix the support to the edge of the work table. That said, it is one of the essential naval modeling tools in your workshop.

SET OF BASIC MODELING TOOLS Nº1

The set of basic tools for naval modeling and other modelling (27000-N) comes with tools to build model ships, planes and trains more easily. Includes cutter, tip nailer, hand drill, oblique cutting pliers, thread tweezers and sanding block.

As we have talked about the nailer previously, we focus on the remaining tools. The no.1 cutter is essential for any modeler and it is characterized by its aluminum handle and interchangeable blade. As for the manual drill, it is perfect for working details on wood and soft plastic such as polystyrene. It has a double jaw and a 1 mm drill bit.

Using the oblique cutting pliers, the modeler can cut wood, plastic and soft metals such as brass. Japanese-style thread shears with very sharp tips are very precise in cutting the threads of boat maneuvers. They are easy to use with two fingers. Lastly, the sanding block leaves the wooden surfaces smooth and homogeneous. It allows to work rounded and sharp shapes.

SET OF PROFESSIONAL MODELING TOOLS Nº1

The set of professional tools for naval modeling and other modelling (27001-N) includes plank bender to bend the wooden strips, tweezers, modeller’s hammer, flat file, flat rule in steel and rounded nose pliers.

The plank bender for bending wood, made of ABS high quality, includes spare blade, in addition to the one it comes with. It is a kind of pliers for bending wooden strips by making incisions on the inside of the curve that you want to achieve. In this way, the modeler can clad the hulls of ships much more easily. On the other hand, straight tweezers help handle small parts in the model building process. Especially when it comes to sticking them.

The modeler’s hammer is also widely used. With measures appropriate to the hobby of modeling, it is made of chromed steel and has an ergonomic handle. And finally, some round nose pliers to work and shape metal parts, wires and other details of the models.

It is an indispensable naval modeling tool to be able to mark the line on the hull with total precision. With a pencil and this product, you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches.
