Modeling and Crafts Glues: White Glue and Cyanoacrylate for Porous Materials

There are many occasions when our modelers friends ask us what adhesives and glues for modeling and crafts to use. Even more, when they are assembling one of our model boats and model planes made of wood. Well, the time has come in this blog post to talk about it. If you want your parts are completely united with the best results, there is no doubt, the glues made by Artesanía Latina are at the forefront.

Next, we indicate you which are the glues for modeling and crafts that you can obtain on our website, pay attention.

GLUES FOR MODELING AND CRAFTS: WHITE GLUE

The first option you have is white glue for wood and porous materials (27602). Presented in a 250 gr bottle, it is one of the so-called easy-to-apply vinyl adhesives. It dries quickly -by having a short drying time- and you can use it on porous materials such as wood, cardboard, carpet, cork, fabrics and tablex. Its texture is creamy.

It comes with a nozzle for easy opening and closing, thus avoiding any type of spillage or the white glue for wood from drying out. Also, if you have traces of this adhesive on your skin, don’t worry, it is not inconvenient for the skin. And if the glue smells too much, neither, because Artesanía Latina’s white vinyl glue does not release toxic fumes.

As for its uses, it can be used, as we discussed, when you are building models made of wood and making crafts such as sewing and fashion, cork and rubber creations, and an endless number of other tasks and hobbies. In this sense, we recommend that if you apply the glue with a brush, keep it moist in water.

GLUES FOR MODELING AND CRAFTS: CYANOACRYLATE FOR POROUS MATERIALS 50 GR. AND SPRAY ACCELERATOR

Another of the fantastic glues for modeling and crafts. When you require even faster drying than white glue, this is your option. The set with the dense cyanoacrylate bottle and its 50 gr. of product and with the cyanoacrylate accelerator spray of 200 ml (27602) by Artesanía Latina. The adherence you will obtain is maximum and instantaneous!

It is perfect for gluing wood and other porous materials such as cardboard, carpet, cork, fabrics and tablex. The dense cyanoacrylate has a nozzle for easy opening and closing, thus preventing any type of spillage or that the cyanoacrylate itself dries up. And a cannula for its measured and precise application. It is also important to note that our cyanoacrylate does not have solvents.

Being a dense cyanoacrylate and slower drying compared to other cyanoacrylates, the accelerator is essential as it makes the glue dry more quickly. Before using it in your activity, we recommend that you test it.

1. Put a drop of dense cyanoacrylate on the two parts to be glued.

2. Next, apply the cyano accelerator spray to one of the two parts to be joined and wait for the product to evaporate.

3. At that instant, put the two parts together. Be careful because as soon as you stick them they will not be able to detach from each other.

Store and protect the dense cyanoacrylate bottle for better conservation in a place out of direct sunlight, dry and with a cool temperature. Wash your hands repeatedly with lukewarm water in case they get stuck with the product.

CYANOACRYLATE FOR POROUS MATERIALS 20 GR.

Another novelty in terms of glues for modeling and crafts is the bottle of dense cyanoacrylate 20 gr. (27620) by Artesanía Latina. This is an easy-to-apply glue and is used to achieve instant joining of parts. Ideal for gluing wood and other porous materials such as cardboard, carpet, cork, fabrics and tablex. The jar has a spout for easy opening and closing, thus avoiding spills or drying of the product.

Soleil Royal History: the French Warship of King Louis XIV in the 17th Century

It is, for sure, one of the largest and most powerful warships of the Baroque. Without a doubt, it is also the most beautiful decorated of the boats of the time, it was sublime. We are talking about the French warship that was part of the Navy of King Louis XIV during the 17th century. We are writing this post to learn about the history of the Soleil Royal, the Gallic ship of the line with 104 guns arranged in a battery on three levels, flagship of Admiral Tourville. The emblem of the ‘Soleil’ had been chosen by the French monarch as his personal symbol.

The history of the Soleil Royal begins with its construction in Brest (France) between 1668 and 1670. Who was in charge of carrying it out? The engineer Laurent Hubac, who takes two years to finish. It is launched in 1669, but unfortunately it lays unused in the port of Brest for years. At first, Soleil Royal does not enters into combat at all.

As we have already mentioned, its decoration is spectacular. The person in charge of this is Antoine Coysevox, a sculptor who creates all the decorations on the ship, including those on the gun embrasures. This plastic artist from the court of Louis XIV is also responsible for the impressive and still existing ornaments of the Palace of Versailles.

SOLEIL ROYAL HISTORY: NINE YEARS’ WAR

The history of the Soleil Royal continues, does not stop. Subsequently, the Soleil Royal is commissioned with 112 guns and 1,200 men on board when the Nine Years’ War in 1688. Also, called War of the Great Alliance, War of the Palatinate and War of the League of Augsburg.

The King decides at first to send all his ships prepared to sail and for battle. However, seeing himself in inferior conditions, he also orders to send the useful ships, even if they are moored to the dock, as is the case of our Soleil Royal. So this vessel departs from the port of Brest on June 22, 1690.

Then, Tourville commands the French ship, a highly respected officer in the Navy. The Soleil Royal remains waiting for a favorable wind to go to the Isle of Wight. There, the English fleet remains anchored after sending two French ships on a reconnaissance mission. On July 10, 1690, the Battle of Béveziers (Beachy Head) broke out with the surprise factor of the French attacking the Anglo-Saxons. After its victory, France seizes control of the English Channel.

The role in history of the Soleil Royal is fundamental as the flagship of the Escadre du Ponant (Squadron of the West) leading the French naval formation on the squad center. It is said that it is a good sailboat, it sails optimally, and its firepower is lethal.

THE FRENCH WARSHIP AT THE BATTLE OF BARFLEUR

Once its naval warfare began, the Soleil Royal became a French war emblem. Now with 104 guns, the French ship leaves the port of Brest on May 12, 1692 leading a fleet with 44 more ships. It may seem that there are many. However, on May 29, the French ships encountered the incredible Anglo-Dutch naval force. 97 powerful warships await the French in the Battle of Barfleur.

The crossfire starts! The Soleil Royal and its companions, being vastly outnumbered, decide to attack the enemies. After an arduous fight, it is forced to flee because of the serious damage suffered. Its crew is depleted by half and can barely sail. For this reason, the Soleil Royal and the ships Triomphant and Admirable are forced to anchor in Cherbourg to be repaired. They cannot reach the port of Brest, further away than the one mentioned.

END OF THE SOLEIL ROYAL AT THE BATTLE OF CHERBOURG

The history of the Soleil Royal ends at the Battle of Cherbourg. While docked at the Pointe du Hommet, the French warship is attacked by 17 ships which it repels with its artillery fire. The problem is that the stern of the ship catches fire and spreads the rest on the ship of the line.

With the help of the population of Cherbourg, only one survivor can be rescued from the around 883 – or even more – crew. The end of the history of the Soleil Royal, it remains near the arsenal of the port. Of course, its legacy continues throughout the seas and world naval history. A detailed 1:40 scale model from 1839 of the hull and sculptures of the Soleil Royal is currently on display at the Musée National de la Marine in Paris.

Santa Ana Model Ship in Wood at 1:84 Scale: The Return of the Acclaimed Naval Model Building Kit for Experts, Limited Edition Trafalgar 1805!

The renewed wooden naval modeling kit of the famous Spanish ship of the line Santa Ana at 1:84 scale was the prototype of a series of 8 identical vessels that would constitute the nerve of the Armada. The modeler will be able to find in this new limited edition of the kit hundreds of high quality parts such as strips, rods and sheets of solid wood and plywood of basswood cut by a precision laser. Once Santa Ana model ship (22905-N) is built, it measures 46.45” (1180 mm) length, 34.25” (870 mm) height and 18.11” (460 mm) width. Its design by means of false keel and frames brings its assembly closer to that of the real vessel. And how to assemble it? The modelers and 3D designers who work at Artesania Latina have redesigned all the old instructions. Colour arrives to the Spanish ship of the 18th century! Now, you will be able to appreciate the different assembly steps much more clearly. Languages? Spanish, French, Italian, English, German, Dutch and Russian.

However, Artesania Latina modelers recommend to paint of the Santa Ana model ship with its Specific Water-Based Acrylic Paint Pack (277PACK22), for sale separately. In short, built at the Ferrol Shipyards and launched in 1784, the Santa Ana was the first of a series of three-deck ships called the Meregildos. Attacked by several English ships, he was captured and later saved by the Rayo, Montañés and San Justo, who towed him to Cádiz in the middle of the night. Waterline Marker for Model Ships: Indispensable Naval Modeling Tool for Boat Hulls

Our modelers friends had been asking us for a waterline marker from our house, from Artesania Latina. They know of the extensive experience of our firm in the creation of effective and efficient ship modeling tools. After our 3D computer designers and our modelers developed a very conscientious joint work, we present our Waterline Marker (27649). You can click here to acquire it quickly and make your own tool workshops more complete. Your wishes are already a reality! We always read the opinions of our customers and fellow fans very seriously!

The waterline marker is one of the most necessary modeling tools during model ship building. This very useful product allows the modeler to mark that line around the ship, also thanks to the pencil included. Includes measurements in both metric and imperial systems. In this sense, it is 23 centimeters or 9 inches tall to be able to perform tasks on different naval miniatures depending on its size. In addition, it has a mechanism that makes it easy to raise, lower and fix the pencil to paint the line where your scale model demands, it is adjustable in height.

The waterline marker is made from precision laser cut plywood parts so assembly is a breeze. We recommend the use of dense cyanoacrylate and accelerator (27650) -sold separately- to glue the different pieces, fix them so that they are much more stable. In short, it makes it easy to mark the line on the hull of the ship model with total precision. In general, it can be used as a gauge to mark lines parallel to the work surface. But… How do you use the waterline marker correctly?

HOW TO USE THE WATERLINE MARKER

First of all, to maintain the ship models stable, position the ship’s keel well on its exhibition base or on our hull support (27011) for models with false keel up to 15.748” (400mm), for sale separately. The stern and bow must be balanced at the proper heights.

On the other hand, the waterline marker helps us navigate by painting the ship from bow to stern to trace that mark. In this way, the waterline is always it remains at the same height and the finishes will be much better when it comes to varnishing or painting with colors. When the ship is positioned, use a level you have at your workshop so that the naval model is also balanced from port to starboard.

Consult the assembly instructions of the vessel. Be sure of the height at which you should paint the water line. Place marker and pencil at desired height without painting. When you’re in the right place, move the marker from bow to stern while paying attention to where the pencil goes. After making that run and you are at the stern, see if that is where you have to start and end the line. If this is not the case, tilt the naval model slightly from the bow or stern to bring it into its correct position.

Now you can plot. Place the pencil against the hull of the ship. Do not force anything and move the marker making sure that the lower base does not rise from where it rests. The fixing wedge that the height tool has will help you to keep the pencil completely in its straight position. Even so press little so that the line is perfect. And ready! Fast and easy!

HISTORY OF BLUENOSE SCHOONER: THE FASTEST SAILBOAT

Its name is due to the nickname given to the inhabitants of Nova Scotia (blue nose), where the schooner was launched on March 26, 1921. In this sense, it was built at the Smith & Rhuland.

The Bluenose was operating in the Grand Banks region along with dozens of other vessels. This is a peculiar area of the North Atlantic, comprised between the coast of Canada and Labrador. It is subject to periodic mists that make it an Eden for fishermen. There, hake, cod, salmon and tuna are found in prodigious quantities. That is why this schooner is also known as ‘The Queen of the Grand Banks’.

He was going to fish in Newfoundland waters but his destiny changed. It was seen that this fast schooner won all the regattas that were organized on the east coast of the United States. These fishing boats, especially because of their sails, are conditioned to reach great speed.

Thus, the Bluenose was winner of the North Atlantic International Fishermen’s Trophy in all the races held between 1920 and 1938. Captain Angus Walter, at the forefront. In 1942, despite the efforts of this captain and many others who tried to keep the ship in Nova Scotia, the Bluenose was sold to carry cargo in the West Indies. On January 28, 1946, when running aground on a coral reef off the coast of Haiti.

Our 3D designers and our modellers have rethought the aesthetics and assembly of the American schooner model Virginia (22115) at 1:41 scale. So, the assembly experience for our modellers friends is much more pleasant, fun and simple. And what’s more, we present this faithful miniature replica of the 19th century ship in a new box!

It is a beautiful naval miniature suitable for beginners modellers, although it will also delight the rest of the modellers, regardless of their level. Once it is built, the American schooner model Virginia measures 21.25” (540mm) length, 4.72” (120mm) width and 19.68” (500mm) height.

The Virginia is a type of vessel known as a ‘schooner’ launched in 1819, as we mentioned earlier. It was very fashionable, along with other small rigged boats, in the United States for its great speed, maneuverability and elegance. Precisely, these schooners were the germ of the US Coast Guard. Its objective? To comply with the new import and customs laws thanks, in addition, to its central rotating carronade and light weapons. It dedicated itself to controlling maritime borders in interception and pursuit missions of other ships that tried to reach its coast.

ELECTRIC PLANK BENDER AND PLANK BENDER FOR SHIP MODELING

The electric plank bender 220 volt (27074-1) is a tool for naval modeling and other crafts aimed at modellers in the European market. This wonderful tool allows you to bend and shape the wooden slats up to 3mm thick of your model ships in order to give them the curved shape of your hulls. You will get extraordinary results, guaranteed. Of course, we recommend that, for an optimal result, you moisten the wood beforehand.

The contents of the electric plank bender kit are the following:

For modelers who prefer more artisanal methods when it comes to bending strips and assembling their naval models, we offer the manual plank bender (27024).

This tool uses the technique of making incisions on the curve inner face in order to bend the strip, for example, to assemble the hulls of miniature ships.

NAVAL MODELING TOOLS: MICRO MOULDING SCRAPERS / MICRO SHAPERS

MAGNETIC NAILER FOR MODEL BUILDING

The magnetic nailer (27023) by Artesania Latina is one of the essential naval modeling tools for models that need nails to build. It facilitates fast and easy nailing in wood during the assembly of the hull of model ships, but also when fixing the deck elements. It is important to note that, in order for the tips to stick to the nailer, they must be made of iron or contain iron.

How to use? Apply moderate pressure to the nailer, so you can drive the nail straight and accurately. After entering the wood, we recommend finishing off the tip with the modeller’s hammer (27017) or by tapping the handle of the nailer if the modeling enthusiast has advanced knowledge and skills.

HULL SUPPORT FOR SHIP MODELS

More specific, it’s impossible! The hull support for model ships (27011) is another of the naval modeling tools you need to be able to work comfortably on them. It is highly recommended for holding naval models with a false keel of up to approximately 400 mm. On this aspect, the hull support is valid for the miniature replicas of the 19000 series, 20100 and some of the 20400 of Latin Crafts.

Thanks the hull support you can hold the hull of the boat you are building and kepp immobile, leaving both hands free. It’s great, for example, for keeping the hull level and static when tracing the waterline. It has a pivot point to tilt the helmet to the ideal working position. The hull fastening and the pivot point of the bracket are fixed by means of thumbscrews. Including two metal mini clamps to fix the support to the edge of the work table. That said, it is one of the essential naval modeling tools in your workshop.

SET OF BASIC MODELING TOOLS Nº1

The set of basic tools for naval modeling and other modelling (27000-N) comes with tools to build model ships, planes and trains more easily. Includes cutter, tip nailer, hand drill, oblique cutting pliers, thread tweezers and sanding block.

As we have talked about the nailer previously, we focus on the remaining tools. The no.1 cutter is essential for any modeler and it is characterized by its aluminum handle and interchangeable blade. As for the manual drill, it is perfect for working details on wood and soft plastic such as polystyrene. It has a double jaw and a 1 mm drill bit.

Using the oblique cutting pliers, the modeler can cut wood, plastic and soft metals such as brass. Japanese-style thread shears with very sharp tips are very precise in cutting the threads of boat maneuvers. They are easy to use with two fingers. Lastly, the sanding block leaves the wooden surfaces smooth and homogeneous. It allows to work rounded and sharp shapes.

SET OF PROFESSIONAL MODELING TOOLS Nº1

The set of professional tools for naval modeling and other modelling (27001-N) includes plank bender to bend the wooden strips, tweezers, modeller’s hammer, flat file, flat rule in steel and rounded nose pliers.

The plank bender for bending wood, made of ABS high quality, includes spare blade, in addition to the one it comes with. It is a kind of pliers for bending wooden strips by making incisions on the inside of the curve that you want to achieve. In this way, the modeler can clad the hulls of ships much more easily. On the other hand, straight tweezers help handle small parts in the model building process. Especially when it comes to sticking them.

The modeler’s hammer is also widely used. With measures appropriate to the hobby of modeling, it is made of chromed steel and has an ergonomic handle. The set also includes a flat file to roughen wood, plastic and metal surfaces. A 150 mm steel flat ruler to take measurements or use as a guide. And finally, some round nose pliers to work and shape metal parts, wires and other details of the models.

WATERLINE MARKER FOR MODEL SHIPS

It is an indispensable naval modeling tool to be able to mark the line on the hull with total precision. With a pencil and this product, you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches. In general, it can be used as a gramil to mark lines parallel to the work surface. It is height adjustable and includes measurements in both the metric system and imperial.
